"While We're At It" is a completely newly remodeled 4 bedroom 2 full bath "Vintage" 1894 cottage in Mt. Gretna, Campmeeting. This cottage underwent a full restoration in 2015 and has been on the August "Mt. Gretna Tour of Homes" in 2014, 2015, 2016 and now again in 2018. The cottage faces quiet non-driveable 2nd street near the Tabernacle. Relax on the porch and cookout on the back patio with umbrellas, tables and chairs which seat eight. Parking for 2 vehicles is located at the back of the cottage off of 1st street. Please follow our simple directions to the cottage and please do not use your phone or GPS. They don't understand our one-way, non-drivable streets. This cottage has central air-conditioning and heat for your comfort. It also has a propane look-alike wood stove for those chilly days/nights in the spring and fall. Bedrooms #1 & #2 each have queen size beds. Bedroom #3 has two twin beds. Bedroom #4 has two twin size beds which can be placed together to make a king size bed. The walls in the bedrooms only rise 8 feet so the old time structure is exposed. Guests say they love lying in bed looking at the old wood and hearing the kids conversations in the next room. Mostly all the cottages in Mt. Gretna have 5/8" old chestnut or hard pine interior walls (wood no longer available) so sound does travel freely. If you're bringing uncle Charlie who snores like a freight train going up an Allegheny Mountain you might not want to stay in Mt. Gretna (or get him a hotel room) as all cottages (242 of them) were originally built as summer cottages from 1892 through 1915. Bathroom #1 boasts a walk-in Roman tile shower. Bathroom #2 has a clawfoot tub with shower. The kitchen comes with all appliances including dishwasher and microwave. Linens, towels and beach towels are provided along with full use of the high efficiency washer/dryer. The cottage also has high speed WIFI internet, cable TV, Apple TV and Blu-ray DVD player. "While We're At It" was on the "Mt. Gretna Tour of Homes in 2014, 2015 and will be again in 2018. Check out our weekly summer rates.

About Bob & Tammy Travitz
Tammy & I live just north of Hershey and have lived here all of our lives. We used to come to Mt. Gretna as kids (Tammy's family came for the ice cream at the Jigger Shop, I came to sit at the Mt. Gretna Tabernacle for the Methodist revivals). When we had kids we'd take them to the Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach and the Jigger Shop and bicycle ride with them on the rails and trails that goes through Mt. Gretna. After they were off to college we were looking for something to do and came up with the idea of buying a property in Mt. Gretna to maybe retire there someday. After 2.5 years restoring our first cottage ("One Fine Landing") the restoration bug bit us and we subsequently now have 3 restorations under our belt. We enjoy sharing clean comfortable, modern but with Gretna charm cottage/home with our guests so they too can experience the Mt. Gretna community, charm and all the activities it has to offer.
Bob & Tammy Travitz purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why Bob & Tammy Travitz chose Mount Gretna Heights
Tammy & I purchased this cottage in 2014 after doing a complete restoration of our other cottage ("One Fine Landing.") Friends of ours convinced us to purchase it because it was a cottage that was little changed since 1894. It had minimal amenities and only one electrical circuit with just two receptacles, one upstairs and one downstairs. The shower was a rusty old metal enclosure that topped out at my shoulder and with an old water heater beside it. The kitchen was rudimentary and installed probably in the 40's. The floors has 1940's carpet glued to the old chestnut original floors. We saw the potential of restoring this cottage and enjoyed the challenge of keeping the old "open vintage feel." Example is the upstairs bedrooms have no ceilings so you can throw "sock balls" over to the next room like they did years ago. WWAI is now an original cottage of 1894 but with air-conditioning , heating, modern baths and a functioning kitchen with even a dishwasher. As you can see in the pictures we feel we have achieved this goal and we really enjoy staying in this cottage when it's not rented. This cottage home has been featured multiple years in the "Mt. Gretna Tour of Homes."
What makes this Cottage unique
It's in the heart of Mt. Gretna Pennsylvania where people can enjoy all types of music, plays, musicals, kids programs and wonderful local restaurants. Even though we have a great tree canopy that keeps the area cool, the cottage has central air for those dog days of summer that you sometimes get here in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

My mother-in-law, who is 82 and my niece, who is 10 both said this trip was the best vacation ever. We loved the house and the community it was in. The location is close to everything. Everything in the house worked as advertised. We had not problems with anything. Everything was super clean and neat.
The owners, Bob and Tammy are the best. I have stayed at four other HomeAway properties and they have been great. What sets "While We're At It" above the rest is the organizational skills of Bob and Tammy. They provided explicit direction for everything from how to use the TV, to restaurants, to current local activities, check in and check out procedures. etc.
If you want to stay in a 100+ year old house, in a historic community, enjoy hiking and biking trails, swim and boat in a great lake then this is the place for you.
Wow! Thanks for that great review. I certainly hope that we can continue to live up to those expectations for our future guests. Folks having experiences like yours is why we keep on renting our two rebuilt cottages. We love the community, the people and all the things that Mt. Gretna has to offer. It really is a secret mountain paradise nestled in between Lancaster and Hershey. It was great meeting you and we hope you can return to Mt. Gretna in the near future. Warm regards, Bob & Tammy Travitz
Provides a pure Mount Gretna experience
The house is clean, pleasant, and homey. The gas fireplace made it feel quite nice on a rainy fall weekend.
Thanks for that nice review. We pride ourselves on having a very clean cottage and I'm glad you noticed that we tried to keep our cottage home in the "Mt. Gretna" tradition but with the modern conveniences of today. Yes the gas wood stove fireplace adds ambiance as well as additional heat for those chilly fall and spring days. We're glad you enjoyed it. Warm regards, Bob & Tammy Travitz
Wonderful fall visit
We had a great and relaxing visit! This house was a complete gem, we loved the vintage yet completely updated feel. There was plenty of space for our 5 kids and grandma who came along with us. Both bathrooms were updated and wonderful and the house has everything we could ever think of! The community is so beautiful and unique! We ate at the tavern, which is a 1 minute walk. We also had brunch at Porch and Pantry which was delicious! I loved everything about Mt Gretna! Thanks again!
Thanks you for that nice review. We loved that you were able to get to the Hideaway restaurant/bar as they have a great outside patio for dining. The Porch & Pantry is my wife's favorite place for breakfast but the lunches are great also. Next time try the "Timbers" restaurant as it really is a "Chalet" type restaurant in the woods. They have a great musical review during the month of July. Thanks again for staying with us and have a great fall/winter season. We hope to see you back. Warm regards, Bob & Tammy
Relaxing & Fun Family Time
We were in town for a family wedding and enjoyed our stay at Mt. Gretna. The house was just as advertised. What a treasure! We had fun looking at the electronic picture frame with pictures of the renovations and reading about the area. Nice area to walk around and explore. We also walked to local restaurants for breakfast and pizza for dinner. Our favorite thing about the house was the large porch - we spent most of our time there. Our only regret is that we weren’t there in the summertime! Thanks for sharing your home with us!
Thanks for that nice review. Yes, it's all about the porches here in our Mt. Gretna community. During the summer it's hard to keep a regular pace when walking because of the stops you make talking to all the folks on the porch. We call them "Walk & Talks" where more talking is done than walking. Hopefully we'll see you back in the summer when everything is in full swing here in Mt. Gretna. Warm regards, Bob & Tammy
The cottage was perfect and the community was absolutely charming!
The property was perfect for celebrating our daughter’s 6th birthday with two sets of grandparents. The community itself is adorable and it was an easy drive to Hershey: just perfect!
Thank you for that nice review. We're glad you had such a good time here in Mt. Gretna, Hershey and the Pa Dutch Country area. The community here is unique and people come back year after year because they make friends just by walking around our neighborhood. We call it the Mt. Gretna "Walk & Talk." Mt. Gretna does have appeal for all ages, a quick drive to Hershey Park, or any of our other attractions here and near to Mt. Gretna. Thanks for staying with us at "While We're At It." Warm regards, Bob & Tammy
Relaxing at Mt Gretna
This is my 15th year renting at Mt Gretna. For me and my friends it's like going back in time to a more relaxed slower pace. We play a lot of cards do a lot of walk ing and spend lots of time on the porch. Can't wait for next year to go back.
Thanks for that nice review. You are correct Mt. Gretna is like going back in time to a simpler time. We always enjoy having you return for some laughs and some ruthless card playing on the porch. Looking forward to seeing you next summer. Thanks for choosing "Why Not?" and "While We're At It" for your Mt. Gretna summer retreat. Warm regards, Bob & Tammy
