About Catharine Gallagher & Phil Freeman

Catharine Gallagher and Phil Freeman purchased Pirates Cove Beach House in 2014. Catharine operated "Old Mill Bed and Breakfast" in Eatonville Washington before she and Phil purchased the Copper Creek Lodge property at Mt Rainier..voted #1 by our guests in King5 TV's Evening Magazine competition 2 years in a row.

Catharine Gallagher & Phil Freeman purchased this house in 2014

Why Catharine Gallagher & Phil Freeman chose Shelton

In 2010, Phil and Catharine purchased Pirates Cove Caboose on Hammersley Inlet, a heart thumpingly beautiful property advertised on since 2003. An offer prompted Catharine and Phil to considerer where they might move if they sold their home 3 miles from Mt. Rainier National Park. Puget Sound was calling. After viewing every waterfront property they could find between Belfair and Shelton, Catharine remembered the Beach House across Pirates Cove from the Caboose being for sale. While both are very private, forested beachfront, they are separate properties. You may walk between them at low tide. This was it. There was absolutely nothing like it available anywhere. 11 acres of beachfront property surrounded by forest with apple orchard and a 2000 sq ft., 2 story quintessential beach house.

What makes this house unique

Peace, Quiet, Privacy, 3 king beds, 2 full baths, Private Beach, 4 kayaks, Samsung Washer Dryer, 50" flat screen DVD system with HDMI inputs WiFi, Gas fireplace, Air Conditioning, 11 acres with forest, meadows, terrace, apple orchard and a family of deer who make their way from the beach to feed on the apples in the orchard and are non plussed by the people present. Everything you need is present. All you need to bring is your own good spirits, food and beverages.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had 6 in the Beach House, 2 in the Caboose. Enjoyed our weekend immensely!! Something for everyone and they especially loved the kayaking. Absolutely beautiful spot!

Beautiful, Secluded and Memorable

  • 5 of 5

We had a family reunion in Pirate's Beach House and we all love this place! We were pleasantly surprised that the house was complete with amenities plus more! It is exceeded our expectations. They had olive oil, sugar, salt, pepper, trash bags, paper towels, napkins, and more. Bed sheets, towels, beds were so comfortable. It was like sleeping in a 5 star hotel. The layout of the house was great where all the kids stayed on the main floor and woke up together and played and the adults, had time to rest and have alone time while kids played. The beach was wonderful!!! We spent time fishing and clam digging. They have complete amenities with kayak, paddles, and vests, even children's vests. This was truly a great location and a great place. We had so much fun we didn't to use the hot tub. But we did get to roast marshmallows and eat scores. We will go back again. My 3 year old is still talking about this place and wants to have her birthday here. On the way home, she was literally asking us to turn around and stay at the beach house again.

Family holiday at Pirate's Cove Beach House

  • 3 of 5

Our family (10), grandparents, parents, and grandchildren, spent a family vacation at this property in July . The cabin has a very nice view overlooking the Hammersley inlet, with access to the beach. We had fun on the beach wading, clamming, and kayaking. The large grassey area was great for the kids and the hot tub got good use.

The cabin has 2 nice big bedrooms upstairs with lots of sleeping room. The one small bathroom upstairs has a shower, and it needs an update. The shower had mold and water pressure was weak.

Downstairs is nice and open with big windows facing the inlet. The queen bed on this level has no privacy. Whoever uses it must be last to bed and first up in the morning.

There were a few things that had not been properly prepared or repaired before the arrival of a cabin full of guests:

An air conditioner upstairs leaked and could not be used.

Remote controls needed new batteries

TV/DVD did not work, required repairman in mid- week

Propane tank ran out after first use

Outdoor garbage cans were small and old, had to be emptied mid-week

Cleanliness of cabin rated on 1-5 would be 3

For these reasons we cannot rate this property above average

Amazing. Spectacular views with direct beach access.

  • 4 of 5

Gorgeous, peaceful and nicely appointed. Kayaks are a plus. Our phone service was spotty due to remoteness, therefore wifi on property was a godsend. We would gladly return.

Pros: Beautiful site and views, very attractive and current decor, 3 lovely King size beds. Coffee beans and grinder, well appointed kitchen. Drawer of charger cables. Gracious, patient owners.

Cons: Hard to find - even with directions, and do NOT rely on Google maps. Downstairs only has bathtub with handspray which would be great for kids but does not work for elderly. One more bathroom would have been great. Cleaning crew missed some spots like refrigerator interior drawers, top of wine cooler, top of fridge and other high places. First Aid Kit sorely depleted.

Perfect peaceful getaway

  • 5 of 5

We needed to get away without taking a plane ride--this was perfect. We felt instantly at home. The beds were great (I'm a mattress snob) and the hot tub was a great place to end each evening.

An Absolute Gem!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Pirate's Cove Beach House was completely delightful! The spacious waterfront house had everything we needed for a wonderful, tranquil weekend with friends. The dining room, living room and bedrooms all have incredible views overlooking an easily accessible beach that offered great kayaking (four kayaks were available for our use), beach combing and bird watching. The property felt very private and quiet and the house was beautiful, comfortable, clean and well-equipped with all amenities. We had a great time and highly recommend this rental!
