Why Catharine Gallagher & Phil Freeman chose Shelton
In 2010, Phil and Catharine purchased Pirates Cove Caboose on Hammersley Inlet, a heart thumpingly beautiful property advertised on Greatgetaways.com since 2003. An offer prompted Catharine and Phil to considerer where they might move if they sold their home 3 miles from Mt. Rainier National Park. Puget Sound was calling. After viewing every waterfront property they could find between Belfair and Shelton, Catharine remembered the Beach House across Pirates Cove from the Caboose being for sale. While both are very private, forested beachfront, they are separate properties. You may walk between them at low tide. This was it. There was absolutely nothing like it available anywhere. 11 acres of beachfront property surrounded by forest with apple orchard and a 2000 sq ft., 2 story quintessential beach house.
What makes this House unique
Peace, Quiet, Privacy, 3 king beds, 2 full baths, Private Beach, 4 kayaks, Samsung Washer Dryer, 50" flat screen DVD system with HDMI inputs WiFi, Gas fireplace, Air Conditioning, 11 acres with forest, meadows, terrace, apple orchard and a family of deer who make their way from the beach to feed on the apples in the orchard and are non plussed by the people present. Everything you need is present. All you need to bring is your own good spirits, food and beverages.

Perfect Private Beach Getaway
My large family visited over the Fourth of July weekend and we couldn't have been happier with our stay. Everything we needed was available; the abundance of extra towels was much appreciated! The house was super clean with plenty of parking, and you can't beat the privacy. The only downside is that there's only one shower, but the hot tub made up for that inconvenience. My family is already looking forward to booking Pirate's Cove Beach House next summer!
Family Weekend Away!
The house is beautiful! The property was huge! We saw dear in the morning eating from the fruit trees. We enjoyed the kayaks and the views. There are many stairs to the water, which was a little hard. The kitchen has everything you need for family meal time. The up stairs bedrooms do not have TV's, which was fine for us. The beds and the pillows are great! I would reccomend this beach house to anyone who wants quite time. It was lovely!
Beautiful home and perfect location on the sound for a relaxing vacation
We had such a lovely stay at The Beach House! It was the perfect location for a relaxing vacation away from it all and as a base camp for exploring Lower Puget Sound.
The Beach House was a perfect home away from home! We really appreciated how well stocked The Beach House was for an extended stay, how comfortable it was for daily living, the great beds, and how private the property was, yet so close to town. Owners Phil & Catherine thought of everything!
Ecole & Brad who provide maintenance service at The Beach House were always available by phone whenever we had a question about how to operate something, & on site the same day if something needed repairs. Such nice people!
We loved waking up every day to the beautiful views of Hammersley Inlet with sunlight streaming in the cathedral windows in the master bedroom. Located right on the water and surrounded by nature, The Beach House was truly a special place.
We became oyster aficionados and had great fun finding plenty on the beach at low tide to enjoy for dinner.
We were traveling with our pets and The Beach House was perfect for our little dog and 8 cockatiels. Our dog loved roaming the acres around The Beach House with us, and exploring the beach on our daily walks. Our birds were happy in their cages in front of the wall of windows in the great room overlooking the sound, singing in the morning sunshine.
We stayed at The Beach House in the winter and we had one winter storm that brought the most snow that the area has seen in 70 years. The entire property was transformed into a winter wonderland! The Beach House stayed warm and cozy. The propane stove was a welcome addition for snuggling up by the fire on those chilly nights.
We also really enjoyed the hot tub with its lovely views over the sound. With an electric motorized roof that goes up easily with the flip of a switch, we could use it rain, shine or snow.
On sunny days, even in the middle of winter, it was fun exploring the little bays in the provided kayaks. At high & low tide, Hammersley Inlet becomes completely still like a sheet of glass, reflecting the beautiful sky and clouds above and the beauty of nature all around. The only sounds are the sounds of the wild birds over the water: herons, seagulls, hawks, ducks, wild geese, kingfishers and an occasional eagle. The Beach House is a bird watchers paradise.
We loved our stay here and look forward to returning again in the future. Highly recommend!
You captured the essence of Pirates Cove Beach House in your review. Thank you for staying with us and your thoughtful comments. You are excellent guests. We look forward to your return. Thank you!
My family of four adults spent three nights in this wonderful home in September. The two upstairs masters suites are huge and have great views of the water. They share a small upstairs bath which has a shower. There's a queen bed off the family room on the 1st floor, and another bath with a tub/shower combo on the first floor. The kitchen is well-equipped and also has a great view. The back deck is the perfect place to watch the sunset. Grill and picnic table for outdoor cooking and eating. Just down a flight of stairs is a private beach area. Rocky, as expected. We carried chairs down to the beach area so we could watch our dog play and swim. There are kayaks by the house that can be raised and lowered to the beach using a pulley attachment, which wasn't the easiest thing to do, but worked. Kayaking in the cove was wonderful. Neighbors could be heard but not seen. You might be wondering about your choice on the drive in on the dirt roads - a few sketchy mobile homes, but once you're on the property it feels very private and secure. The jacuzzi is amazing and easy to use with a cover that raises and lowers with the flip of a switch. Sitting in the bubbling water while looking out at the water - can't be beat. Hope to return next year.
Family holiday at Pirate's Cove Beach House
Our family (10), grandparents, parents, and grandchildren, spent a family vacation at this property in July . The cabin has a very nice view overlooking the Hammersley inlet, with access to the beach. We had fun on the beach wading, clamming, and kayaking. The large grassey area was great for the kids and the hot tub got good use.
The cabin has 2 nice big bedrooms upstairs with lots of sleeping room. The one small bathroom upstairs has a shower, and it needs an update. The shower had mold and water pressure was weak.
Downstairs is nice and open with big windows facing the inlet. The queen bed on this level has no privacy. Whoever uses it must be last to bed and first up in the morning.
There were a few things that had not been properly prepared or repaired before the arrival of a cabin full of guests:
An air conditioner upstairs leaked and could not be used.
Remote controls needed new batteries
TV/DVD did not work, required repairman in mid- week
Propane tank ran out after first use
Outdoor garbage cans were small and old, had to be emptied mid-week
Cleanliness of cabin rated on 1-5 would be 3
For these reasons we cannot rate this property above average
Amazing. Spectacular views with direct beach access.
Gorgeous, peaceful and nicely appointed. Kayaks are a plus. Our phone service was spotty due to remoteness, therefore wifi on property was a godsend. We would gladly return.
Pros: Beautiful site and views, very attractive and current decor, 3 lovely King size beds. Coffee beans and grinder, well appointed kitchen. Drawer of charger cables. Gracious, patient owners.
Cons: Hard to find - even with directions, and do NOT rely on Google maps. Downstairs only has bathtub with handspray which would be great for kids but does not work for elderly. One more bathroom would have been great. Cleaning crew missed some spots like refrigerator interior drawers, top of wine cooler, top of fridge and other high places. First Aid Kit sorely depleted.
Perfect location for touring..Hwy 3 destinations..Hood Canal, Allyn, Belfair, Alderbrook, Port Orchard, Silverdale, Bremerton, Paulsbo, Port Townsend, Olympic National Park Hurricane Ridge, Port Angeles, Seattle, Washington Coast, all within an hour and one half from Pirates Cove Beach House. Quote from our guestbooks.."We stayed 13 days and it wasn't long enough".
