Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)
We are 2 artists living and working in Big Sur for nearly 40 years. We teach workshops at nearby Esalen Institute in art, photography, dance, meditation and unfolding one's intuition. We both exhibit our art in local Big Sur & Carmel galleries, and are in museum and private collections worldwide. We love living and creating on this property!
Owners purchased this Cottage in 1991
Why Owners chose Big Sur
There is no other place like Big Sur in the world, with it's breathtaking beauty & it's natural environment. We have some of the worlds greatest & most inspiring teachers, thinkers, artists, writers, poets and illuminaries living here or who have lived here or passed through. The local people, like a tribe of creative individuals, really know how to live life as human 'beings', rather than human doings. The land calls to us in her quiet spiritual whispers, where One can slow down and appreciate the simplicity of just BEING. We feel blessed everyday and are so very grateful to own and live on this property here in God's most magnificent creation!
What makes this Cottage unique
It's all been said above, just leave the world behind and find a sanctuary for the soul here in an environment of a beauty that is beyond words.

2 night stay in Sept.
So we’re from Indiana, and as we're driving down the coast from San Francisco, every turn we take is another photo opp. The sights just kept getting better! After a while, my wife accurately pointed out to me if I continue to stop and take pictures, we may not make our reservation! So I sucked it up and only stopped 1/2 as much as I wanted to. But would you believe it? The views from this rental were every bit as good as we saw along the way! We already miss falling to sleep with the relaxing sounds of the ocean peeling away the stress .
The property to was excellent. It was clean, peaceful, and you can't beat the location and view. It's a rare private experience on the Big Sur coast. Communication with owners was great and they are very kind.
Lovely place and location, potential for fog
We had a brief stay at the cottage and it and the area were lovely and we'd be happy to return. Unfortunately, the fog was incredibly dense and low for the duration of our stay, so we never did see the view (couldn't even see down to the water), but can imagine that in clear weather it would be stunning.
The cottage was comfortable and well-appointed. The bed was comfy and with the windows cracked open at night we could hear the waves. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans, coffee, and some spices. We had a daily visit from a hummingbird and saw several other species pass through. The gardens are lovely and the location is fabulous, being a quick drive to lots of great hiking options, Nepenthe, and many other notable stops.
We hope to return to Big Sur and when we do, we'll definitely keep this cottage in mind!
Unique wonderful property
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Gallery House and the whole Big Sur Area. We hope to get back in 2020. The cabin has a rustic post and beam architecture which fit the history of the area well. We were very comfortable and the owners are easily available by landline phone in the cabin. There are electric heat registers and a wood stove but in August we needed neither. The property looks down on the surf. There is another set of buildings across the driveway and friends of the owners were staying there but the layout assures privacy for both parties. The cabin is level with the highway and so no need to drive up narrow steep canyon roads to get to the cabin but it is a sharp right turn if you are coming south----- so have your turn signal on well in advance and be slowing down showing your brake lights on the bridge as it seems there are a lot of cars which follow closely. We were unable to find a clothesline on the grounds but there is a lime tree. We ate at different restaurants but wouldn't go back to Ventana. The Big Sur Bakery is good for expresso and pastry in the morning but the line for ordering can be a long wait.
Big Sur Dream vacation
My wife and I spent two wonderful days at the Gallery house in Big Sur! The check in process was so smooth, Daniel and Cynthia were wonderful with giving us ideas where to eat and go site seeing!
We couldn't have ask for a better location, we spent hours on the back little porch watching the sunsets! It was so nice to unplug and enjoy the quiet! We had no choice since you can't get a signal. Lol
The only thing I would say that I would change, and I know it a rustic place and you go there for the location/view but for the money you spend per night I kinda expected a premium bed and bedding. Maybe that's just me tho.
Overall we were so sad to leave the Gallery House , that place is magical. We will never forget it!
Very Special Piece of Paradise
We had booked this to celebrate my birthday and it exceeded any expectations we might have had. The drive in itself along the jagged edges of each twist and turn with the mountains falling into the sea had our hearts pounding. Once arriving we loved the remoteness and tranquility, the beautiful landscape of the wide ocean meeting the unbelievably beautiful skies and gorgeous colors of each sunset, the millions of stars at night with many shooting and falling. We witnessed our first whale and calf out in front of us sitting at otter point. This home, our healing massages at Esalen and our amazing meals in Big Sur were all experiences that will stay with us forever. We are so grateful to Cynthia and Daniel for sharing their piece of heaven with us !!
