About Matt Hubner
We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We come from Texas but currently reside in Colorado. However, our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.

Why Matt Hubner chose Volcano
The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!
What makes this Cottage unique
One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Jaggar Museum overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars. (Following the eruption in Lower Puna during the summer of 2018, the lava lake drained from Halema'uma'u and the summit collapsed in. There is currently no lava or glow from the summit, but it will return. It's a matter of when, not if. Maybe during your stay?).

Enjoyable stay in the rainforest
One of the best parts of our trip to Volcano is our stay here. Very convenient to the national park (7 minutes) and Volcano restaurants, including delicious Thai takeout at Thai Thai. Everything was well thought out and taken care of. We enjoyed the heating pad on the bed during the cool nights, as well as the fully stocked kitchen and abundance of windows. It really felt like we were in the jungle. Make sure you step outside on a clear night and star gaze!
I can't even begin to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Hale Hubner. Matt and Tara thought of everything. The cabin fully exceeded expectations. It was super clean and was filled with little thoughtful amenities along with lots of great suggestions on where to go and what to do.
It was almost as if we were separated from civilization yet within a few miles was anything we needed. Volcanoes National Park was a mere 3 miles away and we visited multiple times.
We were also 30 to 60 minutes away from beautiful beaches and incredible waterfalls.
If you are looking for an adventure, but still want creature comforts look no further than Hale Hubner!
We enjoyed staying at Hale Hubner. It was unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. Being surrounded by the thick rainforest was beautiful and almost otherworldly. It’s convenient for visiting volcanoes national park and the famous black sand beach Punalu’u, which was beautiful. Any issues were handled quickly and we truly enjoyed our stay.
One thing to note: the bathroom walls do not go all the way up to the high ceiling, I.e. not soundproof. It was fine staying with my family, but if you’re going on a romantic getaway, it’s something to consider.
What a gem in the middle of the jungle, we enjoyed our stay a lot!
The treehouse is an exceptional place if you want to combine the Hawaii Vulcanoes NP visit with a rainforest stay. We enjoyed the secluded house, the feeling to be in the middle of the rainforest with all smells and bird sounds. Close to NP, black beach, Hilo. We recommend this house wholeheartedly to anyone who wishes to explore that part of the island.
Cozy treehouse near Volcanoes National Park
This is a perfect place to use as a base as we explored Volcanoes for a few days. Although I can see how it may be difficult to find at night, we arrived at night and our GPS led us right to it. The owner had a lighted street number on the gate which was also helpful.
it was definitely cooler in the volcano area but we were comfortable at night and did not have to run the heater or the wood burning stove. We arrived prepared with matches and a fire starter log but turned out there were a lot of boxes of matches in a drawer and there was already a fire log there so now there are three.
We appreciated that there was a dehumidifier that ran automatically during the day. It kept the tree house nice and dry. We had stayed at another property on Hawaii last year that had moisture problems so we thought this was a great idea.
Although we liked the automation of the house, there weren't many places to plug things in. There were outlets at the head of the bed, but there wasn't really space to put camera batteries, my computer, phone and other things on the little side table by the bed. I was also little concerned about overloading the outlet extender. It would be nice to have a surge protector power strip in the living room to easily charge.
Also it would have been nice to have access to some laundry detergent. We wanted to wash one load of clothes but there was no detergent and we were mostly out hiking and stuff during the time the store was open. We ended up just doing laundry at the next VRBO.
Overall, it was a great experience!
I had such a great time at the treehouse my family. Matt was great at communicating with me and also a quick to refund the security deposit. Plenty to do in the area and the place was well kept. I will definitely book again!
