Aloha! E komo mai. Nou ka hale. Welcome to our Big Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our house your home away from home during your next visit.

Hale Hubner is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the Puna lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for Kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.

Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious sun deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. On clear nights, the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater is just visible through the tree line!

A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.

We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

About Matt or Tara Hubner

We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We come from Texas but currently reside in Colorado. However, our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.

Why Matt or Tara Hubner chose Volcano Village

The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!

What makes this cottage unique

One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Jaggar Museum overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Review from TripAdvisor. "Wow! Our stay at Hale Hubner was amazing! It was more then what we expected. Unfortunately we only stayed there for 2 nights, it has everything for a long stay for 2 persons. The location is very private in the forest of Vulcano and the large windows showed this view in every room. The neighbourhood is very friendly with neightbourwatch. We loved everything. The friendly e-mails from the owners and personal touch with pictures of the family made us feel at home. Beautiful interieur with a relaxing sofa. Good wifi. The large balcony including a new gass bbq and easy chairs where very relaxing and convinient. The bed was soft with seperate electric blankets on the matras, for extra heating. Because I'm always cold I turned it on just a half an hour before jumping into bed, my husband liked it just the way it was. We didn't use the woodstove, but I can imagen the use of it is very cosy because it can be cold in the evening and night. The kitchen is fully suplied. If we ever return in the future we will definately stay here again. The town is small, but you have to visit Greg and Joyce with their kids at cafe Ohi'a to enjoy a delicious sandwich for lunch. Their kindness warmed our harts."

Beautiful cabin

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely stay at Hale Hubner. It is a beautiful cabin that is easy to get to and is only a few minutes drive to Hawaii Volcanos National Park! A must see while in the area! The cabin is clean, well maintained and includes all amenities. We would definitely like to stay there again if visiting the Big Island again! Mahalo!

Very well equipped

  • 5 of 5

We felt at home in this spacious yet cozy cottage and surprised at how well equipped it is. Everything was in impecable condition, organized and easy to understand.

It was our first experience with a rental and we feel like it will be pretty difficult to top sometime soon.

Rustic, Adventuresome, Private, Convenient to Park

  • 5 of 5

Hidden in the jungle, we Michiganders liken this place to a cabin in the woods. No granite countertops or tiled shower, but definitely everything you need for a comfortable stay. Cool nights made the woodstove very welcomed. Perfect location for Volcanoes National Park and other south island adventures. Hosts were great to work with.

Lovely Lifted Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This place is so cool, like a little tree house right in the forest. You feel isolated but are also close the neighbors which is a nice balance.

Matt and Tara made everything a breeze. The unit was easy to find and could not be closer to the National Park. Huge plus since a major highlight for us was going back to the park after dark. It was an easy drive there and back.

Matt and Tara have added a lot of personal touches to the unit including photography, island information and postcards if you want to send one home. The unit was very clean and well maintained. The unit seemed bigger than the pictures make it seem.

We found the unit very cold at night so make sure you are prepared and willing to cozy up. Would only be an issue for a few months out of the year but is worth mentioning.

We were surprised that not a lot of the restaurants were open on Sunday and Monday night (Sunday not super surprising) so if you are at all picky make sure you pick something up in Hilo (which has a safeway and walmart). The kitchen is fantastically stocked so it is easy to cook in the unit if you would like.

We only had two nights here and wished that we had longer so we could have settled in a bit more and enjoyed the beautiful deck a bit more.

Cabin in the forest

  • 4 of 5

House is lifted like a tree house feel, with windows that invite the forest in. We're here with it being about mid 50s in the mornings and beautiful days till the mid afternoon. Exceptional stay, like that we had some technology to keep us busy when it did rain.

I would stay again and also recommend this place to our friends and family

Rain forest cabin

  • 5 of 5

Hale Hubner is a jewel of a space, with its gorgeous wood interior and tasteful furnishings. Windows on all sides look out on beautiful rain forest foliage, yet there's space enough around the cabin to permit light to come in. Most important, though, is the feeling of warmth and trust that Matt and Tara have created through words of welcome on the fridge, family photos here and there, a collection of books on Big Island sights and wildllife, and books and toys for children. In addition, this sweet, quiet place is immaculate. Besides Volcano National Park, we loved our visit to the Tropical Botanical Garden and a spectacular sunset boat ride to see lava flowing into the sea. We hope to return to Hale Hubner. Thanks, Matt and Tara!
