About Matt Hubner
We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We come from Texas but currently reside in Colorado. However, our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.

Why Matt Hubner chose Volcano
The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!
What makes this Cottage unique
One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Jaggar Museum overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars. (Following the eruption in Lower Puna during the summer of 2018, the lava lake drained from Halema'uma'u and the summit collapsed in. There is currently no lava or glow from the summit, but it will return. It's a matter of when, not if. Maybe during your stay?).

Volcano Treehouse in a rainforest
Aloha! We are a family of three and we truly enjoyed our stay at Hale Hubner. Communication with Matt during the reservation process was always spot-on. The cottage was clean and well stocked with kitchen essentials, extra bedding, beach gear and even fire-starter for the potbelly stove. Believe it or not, you may actually want to use the stove at least once during your stay. There is a w/d downstairs in the carport that is always nice to have on extended vacations. Volcano Village is totally chill. It was our favorite part of the island. The cottage is spitting distance to Volcanoes NP and easy access to Hilo and Puna sightseeing. Our favorite spots were the Maku'uu Sunday Farmers' Market in Pahoa and Uncle Robert's Wednesday Night Market in Kalapana. If you want to avoid the crowds of Kona-Kailua and enjoy more of the locals' scene, come to Volcano.
Perfect little hideaway!
The Treehouse Cottage was a great little retreat for my husband and I while on our babymoon. The location was so close to the Volcanoes Nat'l Park and then it wasn't that bad of a drive when we wanted to go to dinner in Hilo. Matt was very thorough in his communications with us before and during our visit. He was nice enough to offer up some cool ideas of where we should stop along our drive from Kona. I definitely recommend arriving for the first time before nightfall. The location is fairly secluded so it's best to get acclimated and check in during the daytime. Five stars all around!
This was the perfect place to rest after a day of hiking and exploring. It was so peaceful.
Love the treehouse and Volcano
Great location for the Volcanos National Park and the town is great. The Treehouse is quiet with a comfortable bed. We enjoyed our time at the Treehouse.
Volcano tree house
Matt and Tara’s place was terrific! The area was easily accessible to Volcano National Park. Very cozy, and I would recommend bringing some warm clothes as jungle nights can get quite chilly.
Overall an amazing place to stay. Although in a neighborhood, the property feels isolated and remote, as you surrounded by lush vegetation. The elevated living areas give you the impression of staying in a forest canopy.
Volvaco Village Bungalow
Very nice bungalow, loaded with amenities, appreciated that it was local Hawaiian style furnishings. The road was a bit bumpy and the gate lock very hard to see at night, but overall we enjoyed our stay there. Mahalo!!
