Bairro Alto is an old and typical neighborhood in central Lisbon, with narrow cobbled streets, centuries-old houses, small traditional shops, restaurants and a lot of nightlife. Since the 80's is the best known area of Lisbon nightlife, with numerous bars and restaurants, along with Fado houses. There also stood up to 70-80 years of the twentieth century numerous organs of the press. Since then, he acquired a very life and character, which also intersect different generations in fun night search. Gradually few checks that came to be sought after as a place to live, and its population to be renewed and rejuvenated. Our house is at North of Bairro Alto district, bounded by Rua D. Pedro V, this street is very interesting with respect to Antique shops, restaurants, shops of all kinds and where the iconic and inescapable lies bar "Pavilhão Chinês". Bairro Alto is a place that truly changes from night to day. In daylight this bohemian district is a sleepy place, hangover from the previous night, with not much going on except for the shops down Rua do Norte. When the sun sets a new life begins, with restaurants opening their doors, and crowds showing up to spend their bar-hopping night. The bars are small, forcing everyone to spill out onto the streets and creating a street party atmosphere. Rua da Atalaia, Rua do Diário de Noticias and Rua da Barroca become filled with caipirinha-sipping crowds, most under 40, but mixing different urban tribes, straight and gay. It's a place inhabited by old ladies and young artsy hipsters, giving it a vibe that is simultaneously old-fashioned and avant-garde, a shabby-chic neighborhood that really needs no name. It's simply the " bairro," the neighborhood where everything happens - at night. Bairro Alto is a peaceful and traditional neighborhood of Lisbon during the day, turning from the early evening in the main place of evening entertainment and a meeting point for different cultures and generations. It is known as the place of usual concentration of young foreigners who are in Lisbon to study under the program Erasmus. Some of the buildings have been or are being recovered, maintaining the original character of the same, which has allowed the installation of new and alternative commercial spaces, meeting since reference stores (like Leitão & Irmão, the Jorge Welsh or the Cork & Co) in multi-brand shops and workshops (such as the Fátima Lopes designer), to tattoo shops and piercing . On the other hand, the neighborhood has most probably the highest concentration of restaurants and bars in Lisbon, attracting a very diverse audience, both national and foreign.

Bairro Alto offers good public safety by recent works, and the installation of surveillance cameras in some streets. Policing level increased significantly in recent times, usually being held. Bairro Alto is an area of intense nightlife in Lisbon. It is on top of a hill, leaving the low in the valley that way with the Alfama neighbourhood. Through its streets, you will be faced with several restaurants, bars and Fado houses where you can party the night away. The access to this local can be done in a very special way, if you choose one of three elevators available: Elevator da Glória, Elevador da Bica, Elevator Sta. Justa or do Carmo (free with your ticket Yellow Bus).

Bairro Alto was classified as a set of Public Interest (CIP) in 2010.

Our suggestions are: near our house in Bairro Alto : Restauradores - the Restauradores Square marks the liberation of Portugal from Spanish rule in 1640. It is an area where you can find shops, restaurants, pastry shops, hotels, concert halls and two lifts: Gloria and Lavra; Estrela - is an extremely relaxing area where you can find one of the most beautiful gardens of Lisbon, which calls for a picnic or a simple conversation, his side stands the Basilica da Estrela, unquestionable beauty monument; Cais do Sodré - is a waterfront that welcomes nightlife due to the presence of several bars, restaurants and nightclubs in the (hidden website) transport level is also an important station, serving as road, rail and river terminal; Baixa-Chiado - Baixa or downtown Lisbon is near the Rio Tejo in the valley floor formed by two of the seven hills of the city. It was built by the Marquês do Pombal following the 1755 earthquake, in the case of one of the most life locations in the city. This area is the two starting points of tours Yellow Bus Sightseeing Tours (Praça do Comércio and Praça da Figueira) ; Bica - crossing the street (Calçada do Combro) you step into the small Bica neighborhood, known for its famous elevator. This is another picturesque neighborhood that goes down the hill, together with neighboring Santa Catarina which is known for its lookout terrace.

From Lisbon Airport to Bairro Alto:

Traditional route - take the metro to Restauradores (blue line / one line change). Take the elevator of Glória to the Bairro Alto. (metro + elevator).Total estimated time of the journey: 50 minutes

Comfort route - take the Aero Bus (of the airport bus) to the Cais do Sodré (Line 1). Then take bus 758 in "Portas de Benfica" direction and get off at 4th stop "Ascensor da Glória" and here is already in Bairro Alto and will be only 4 min walk to our house. Total estimated time: 40 minutes.

The apartment is on the ground floor, so it has good facilities for people in wheelchairs or with walking difficulties.

This house is situated on a street where there is no commerce and nightlife (no shops, no restaurants and no bars), including the transit is done in one direction and in this side of the street the traffic is few too. All the streets with commerce and become a little more noisy they are very close (about 5 minutes walk) but this house is very quiet and is situated in a street residential zone, only family houses. In my opinion this house is very suitable for families with children, or guests that want quiet but while in the center of everything. Also this house has an advantage too, are in a ground floor, avoiding the fatigue of climbing stairs with luggage, shopping, trolleys and baby carriage, (because Bairro Alto is an old part of Lisbon rarely the buildings has an elevator.

About the Owner

I enjoy multicultural environments and getting acquainted with new people. I travel a lot and I had already visited a great deal of the world. When I travel I like comfort and cleanliness, as well as easy access to cultural places, beaches (which I love), easy transportation, leisure zones, punctuality and above all kindness and helpfulness. Therefore, these are definitely the conditions that I want to provide to my guests.

Location

From the Owner

Because my property is located in Lisbon, a very tourist area, for its excellent, cultural part, , cinemas, scenerys, and in addition to these reasons, because it lies between Lisbon, considered the most interesting spots for tourists to visit. Lisbon keeps winning awards: Lisbon is at the top of tourist preferences in Europe as the best destination to visit, either as a family or in honeymoon, or even to spend holidays in winter, according to the Best Vacations ranking of the US News website. The Portuguese capital was distinguished in the following categories : 'Best Holiday Destination in Winter' (2nd place ) ' More Affordable Destination ' (2nd place ) ' More Affordable Destination for Honeymoon' (3rd place ) 'Best Honeymoon Destination' (10th place ) ' Best Destination to Visit ' ( 6th place ) ' Best Destination for Families' (10th place ) For this evaluation two impartial inputs were chosen in order to determine the ranking of each destination. The first refers to articles published by travel experts and the second to recommendations by users of the US News website. Tourist rates make Lisbon attractive for the quality and diversity of tourism, for romantic stays or family vacations , and for much affordable satisfaction of essential needs such as accommodation and catering, as well as for the various attractions of the capital and mild temperatures. Last year, it reached the proportion of about 90 % foreign and 10 % of Portuguese touring the spaces managed by PSML .
