Tamarindo is a beautiful beach town that is equally a tropical paradise as well as a multicultural hotspot. Called by Forbes magazine Costa Ricas most popular beach, the town has a mixture of high-end shopping, dining, nightlife opportunities combined with Costa Rican flavor. Locals from Costa Rica, the United States, Germany, Italy, Argentina, France, and other nations, operate international gourmet restaurants, bars, casinos, clothing stores, surf shops, beautiful handicrafts stores, and more. Infrastructure abounds in banks, pharmacies, a post office, internet facilities, supermarkets, doctors, dentist, rental cars, video stores, etc.

Located just inside of town, behind the Tamarindo Dirias private Golf Range, the Tamarindo Airport has nearly hourly flights coming and going from two National airlinesSansa Airlines and Nature Air. When Robert August filmed a segment about Tamarindo in his Endless Summer II movie, Tamarindo became internationally famous for its surfing. And for good reason: There are no less than five world-class surf breaks within driving distance of the center of town. These include: Playa Grande, Playa Avellanas, Playa Negra, Playa Langosta, and of course, Tamarindo itself.

And Tamarindo has been the location for other filming as well. E! Wild On Costa Rica and MTV Real World sent one of its casts down here to learn to surf in the Bay. Locals have recently filmed a movie called Fe De Agua for showing at international film festivals, and the popular soap opera Meine Wunderbare Familiewatched by millions every weekspent two weeks shooting scenes to air in Germany. The blue Pacific also offers itself to sports fishermen, sailors, scuba divers, and snorkelers, while Tamarindo affords tourists a wide variety of tour options including horse riding, estuary tours, ATV tours, canopy tours, and more. There are also two championship golf courses nearby, as well as tennis courts for the so-inclined. Tamarindo Beach is located next to Tamarindo National Wildlife Refuge and and Las Baulas National Park, which encompasses Playa Grande. That is where the Leatherback Turtles nest each year and daily tours are available in season to see our national treasures. In addition, because of the natural habitat of Tamarindo Beach, just a daily walk will allow you to see Howler Monkeys, Iguanas, Parrots, and various wild life at your every step.

Night Life

Theres no better way to experience the Costa Rican culture than to visit one of the typical fiestas that take place in the evenings virtually every week in a town around Playa Tamarindo during the Gold Season between December through May. As a matter of fact, Guanacaste is famous for its spirit-filled typical fiestas with traditional bull riding (corrida de toros) and colorful horse parades (topes) with dancing as well. Merengue, Cumbia, and Salsa are the typical music played at these fiestas, and dont forget to try the various foods like beef and potatoes (picadillo), fried chicken (pollo frito), chicharrones (fried pork), corn on the cob, (elote) and for desert, sugared donut sticks (churros). In town, Tamarindo is known countrywide for its nightlife beginning with a selection of restaurants that reflect its global population. Whether it’s Costa Rican, Italian, Sushi, French, Argentinan, Asian Fusion, seafood to gourmet and a scene, or some other style, theres a budget and cuisine here for any savvy palate.

After dinner, hit a casino, or the dance floor at the popular upscale discotheque. If not, theres always a crowd at our local bars, which offer special events every night. The Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort itself hosts fashion shows and concerts at their Amphitheater; check with the Tour Desk for scheduled activities. For a quiet, romantic evening, try a moonlight sail, available by appointment only. And theres no better Tamarindo nightlife than one will find when taking a stroll down the beach basking in the gorgeous glow of the night sky, serenaded by the sounds of nature.

Playa Grande Beach

Located in Marino Las Baulas National Park, this pristine beach offers an both a view to nature and a surfer’s paradise. Playa Grande Travel is easy, just 25 minutes by car from Tamarindo. A Playa Grande vacation brings you to one of the most beautiful beaches in the country and to the home of the national treasure, the Leatherback Turtle. A must for Playa Grande travel during the nesting season October to May is to watch the Leatherbacks lay their eggs during a special tour. The park is open to the general public during the day, but at night its closed and people are escorted onto the beach to watch the turtles come up from the sea to lay their eggs. You will notice that no hotels face the beach and no lights are shining there either. Surfers love to plan a Playa Grande vacation because the surf here is world renowned. The waves starts breaking best 3 hours before high tide and a couple hours after.

Great family friendly

  • 4 of 5

We arrived in Tamarindo from a very long car ride. We were pleased to be greated by Marcelo at Blue Water Properties with everything in order. The condo was perfect for our family. Great central location to all that Tamarindo has to offer. Walk to the beach, shops, restaurants.

The condo was clean and had all that we needed in it including extra towels and bedding. It was actually a little fancier than I expected. The balcony was a great place to have breakfast and enjoy the afternoon.

Not as advertised

  • 2 of 5

If you have stayed at the diria in the part, please be advised that the diria condos are not honoring the terms of their rental contract. Our rental contract allowed us full use of the diria grounds, with the exception of the main pool if the hotel was full. That was NOT what we experienced. At arrival, we were told that we could only use the main pool - everything else was off limits. And hotel staff chased us away from the grassy area next to the beach - we had to rent chairs on the beach. So be warned, if you have rented at the diria condos in the past, things have changed. We ran into other guests at the condos who experienced the same contract violation.

The condo was fine, if a little eh. No hair dryer. Pots and pans are ok, but nothing to write home about. Beds were good. There was a fire alarm that was pulled our last night, and diria security seemed unable to handle it. We all stood outside while they milled around trying to figure it out.

I have stayed at the diria condos multiple times so that I could use the grassy strip by the beach. As condos are no longer able to use that area, I am now looking for a new vacation spot. Owner, shame on you for not honoring the rental contract terms.

Owner's Response: Hi Suzanne, sorry to hear that your stay was not what you felt it should have been. Your rental contract does NOT state that you had complete use of the Diria hotel grounds. IN fact--it says that you had use of the largest and best pool, known as the free form or scenic pool, access to the beach through the resort, Diria shops and restaurants and that the use of the other pools was based on occupancy. Unfortunately the Diria group decided to change their policy on use of the hotel amenities--this decision has nothing at all to do with the owners or the property managers. Having said this, you vacationed in high season and the hotel is full, therefore the hotel reserves the right to deny access. I think that is rather clear in the contract. Regarding the hair dryer, I apologize there wasn't one. Had you emailed or called us we would have been more than happy to deliver you one.

Perfect spot

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th visit to Costa Rica and our 3rd time in Tamarindo. This condo is perfectly located. The pictures of the condo do a great job of showing what it is like, but believe me it is even better in person. The condo and the property is extremely clean. There is a guard 24 hours in the parking area. The pool is spectacular and well maintained. The condo is right in the middle of town. You can walk everywhere. It is less than 5 minutes to the beach. Perfect. I can hardly wait to go back

Great condo, great location

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased with Diria condo #304. Derrick is really friendly and worked with us. Location is great-walking distance to everything in town and really close to a fabulous coffee shop, Cafe Tico. The condo had everything we could have wanted. Beach access was easy and hotel amenities were available to us.

Great Condo, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Wow, what a great place to stay in the heart of Tamarindo. We stayed in a Diria hotel room a few years ago. There is no comparison - the condo is much better with the opportunity to cook if you want or walk to several restaurants. The condo is equipped with everything, including a blender, which we used to make our own tropical drinks. The pool is fabulous and has a swim up bar. The balcony is really spacious, overlooks the pool with a bit of an ocean view, and a perfect view of sunsets. The property manager escorted us to the condo and made sure that we had everything that we needed. The beds are really comfortable and the condo was really clean - no bugs. I highly recommend this condo for your next vacation.
