Overview

About the property

IMPORTANT UPDATE... effective April 12, 2016 -- The road to our property has been re-graded and can handle smaller vehicles. This is good news for those renting compact and economy vehicles.

Gated and lots of room to roam. Meticulously maintained 65+ acre retreat with flowers and wildlife too numerous to mention. Over 3 miles of private hiking trails, many leading to fantastic vistas of the surrounding mountains, volcano and lake.

The main house is a compact 2,500 square foot open floor plan design with 5 bedrooms (1 queen, 1 full and 6 twin) and 2 bathrooms and sleeps 10. Each bedroom has great views. Full kitchen inside with local hand made cabinetry and a local hand made eat-in dining table that seats up to 10.The veranda on the back of the house is huge with great views of the lake and has a working wood stove that can serve as an outdoor kitchen. All linens, towels and kitchen utensils onsite. Be sure to check out our Video of the house and furnishings.

We have a 1 acre private natural swimming pond with platforms and swimming ladders for ease of use. Make sure you check out our photos.

We have many banana, pineapple, orange, mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, lime, breadfruit trees and more. You are welcome to enjoy all that the property has to offer.

We have an experienced property manager (English speaking) and two gardeners that keep the property meticulously maintained. Upon arrival, please feel free to ask what fresh fruit is available so our gardeners can deliver some to your door or pick it for yourself.

We are able to assist with planning and reserving many exotic adventures such as boating, biking, zip-lining, horseback riding, nature hiking, white-water rafting, hot springs, cave exploring, kayaking, canoeing and more... Cost for each tour is different and information is made available after confirmation of booking.

We are only 2.5km (1.5 miles) outside the Town of Nuevo Arenal. Close to shopping, tours and dining. Our location makes a perfect base for those wanting to explore all Costa Rica has to offer or just relax and enjoy our property and the many species of flora, fauna and wildlife.

If you are looking for smaller accommodations for up to four persons, please check out our Blue Butterfly Cottage -- a perfect cottage for one/two persons -- cozy, clean and comfortable VRBO Listing #508655

Please note: If you are planning to rent a vehicle, make sure it has high clearance. 4X4 is not really necessary but something with high clearance is... something like a mini-SUV or larger. We strongly recommend something larger than a compact or economy car. Although the roads are safe, they can be bumpy especially after rainy season and the road to our property is not paved.

About Bret Fields

We stumbled upon this property and immediately knew it was special. We have worked hard to keep the property pristine and to keep it as natural as possible. We hope our guests can appreciate the natural beauty this property has to offer as much as we do.

Why Bret Fields chose Arenal Volcano - Lake Arenal

Our property is situated approximately 1.5 miles (2.5km) above the town of Nuevo Arenal.. There are over 3 miles of roads and trails throughout the property, several ponds, and many species of flora, fauna and wildlife. In addition to the 7-8 springs/creeks that run through the property, we have a 1 acre naturally refreshed swimming pond that is great for a refreshing dip after a long hike.

What makes this house unique

We have many exotic orchids that grow on the property and our property is host to endangered wildlife.... safe but endangered. You will also see many different varieties of birds and flowers that make Costa Rica the most bio-diverse country that it is... please enjoy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The listing was very accurately described. Don't be afraid of the 3 km dirt road up to the property. Ya its a little rocky, ruff, and steep in a section or two but it just adds to the amazing experience you will have. Remember that your in the rain forest.....and yes its going to rain (a lot) but the road is more rock than dirt so its just fine. The house and grounds were really well cared for. The house was cleaner and nicer than expected. Bret will give a suggestion on a local restaurant that has amazing food and a great view of the sun setting over Lake Arenal....take his advice just don't wait until the last night like we did because its amazing. Yes, its a little hard to find but really well worth the effort.

Absolutely Beautiful! Impeccably Maintained!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay here. We visited for a week and saw parrots, toucans, birds of all kinds. We heard howler monkeys in the distance and loved waking up to the sounds of nature. The house was clean and well cared for. We loved the back porch which overlooked acres of beauty. The only challenge was the road to get to the property. It was awful- you definitely need an SUV of some kind (which we were advised by the owners to rent). Henry, the property manager, was amazing. He was kind, comforting, and an excellent touch stone to accommodate any of our needs and answer any questions. He was easily accessible by phone and answered the phone every time we called. He is a treasure. The property itself was beautifully maintained and the driveway itself inside the property was smooth. The pictures do not do this house or property justice. We are so happy to have found this gem and plan to return with more people! What a great house for entertaining!

Thanks so much Bret Fields!

Warmly,

Kate

Spacious and pretty

  • 5 of 5

A very nice place to stay. Lots of room for our family of 5 in the house, comfy beds and awesome views from the patio and balconies. Lovely drive down to Arenal from here alongside the lake. It was a nice surprise to see the beautiful white horses that roam around the grounds. We didn't find the road in too tricky, just take your time and enjoy being off the beaten track. It beats a hotel on the high street any day! Thank you Bret!

Beautiful, super private spot

  • 4 of 5

Don't be intimidated by the rough road (about a mile and a half), as the place and view is beautiful (although you might want to consider something larger than a compact car). Bret was super responsive to our questions, and Henry (his caretaker) too. House was very comfortable and spacious. No cable TV (perhaps a plus), but plenty of dvd's. Meet Henry at the restaurant they recommend before going to th house, as I don't think we'd have found the place on our own. Overall, staying their was a positive and memorable experience.

Beautiful location to get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

This was a great property for our young family (3 kids under age 8). Plenty of room for all of us, and lots to explore on the property itself. Perhaps not the property for everyone as the location is a bit isolated, but for us it perfectly fit what we were looking for.

Henry was extremely quick and helpful with anything we needed, and our kids loved the cute little bananas that the workers brought by for us. Good people and exceptionally kind and courteous. We had lots of fun looking at the flowers, and even swimming in the pond.

We did find the internet was slow -- in our minds, this wasn't a bad thing, as it helped our kids to "unplug", and to spend more time outside and doing things together.

If we're ever back in the area, we would be more than happy to stay here again.

Quiet peaceful retreat

  • 4 of 5

We had a stopover here while traveling from Arenal to Playa Grande. It was a great location and quiet retreat. Everything that you need while you are here so that we did not even have to leave the property. The grounds are beautiful and the pond was refreshing. It was very easy to meet up with the property manager and get here. Would definitely recommend and would stay here again if in the area.

Amazing estate in a great location!

  • 4 of 5

Had a wonderful stay and made time to wonder a small percentage of the grounds (65 acres is a lot of ground to cover but some incredible views, sounds of a stream, natural pools, variety of birds and flowers are all there to be enjoyed! The house was nice, albeit hot even with all the fans running at night. I think we had a hot week of weather. My only complaint is the lack of a laundry which in a property this size and location is a real downer especially with kids. Only option we were given was to drop off in town where they charge per pound. We had an issue with the upstairs shower which was quickly fixed once reported.

Other than that, we had a great stay and I would recommend it but a 4x4 is a must to get there!
