About Jim & Ann O'Connor

We are retired PA educators who grew up in York, PA. We are both graduates of York Catholic High School. Jim did his undergrad at Indiana State University and Ann did hers at York College. Together we have 53 years of teaching experience.

Ann was first introduced to Chincoteague by her father over thirty-five years ago. As many say, it was love at first sight. During our summer vacations there, we would dream about owning a place of our own.

After putting three sons through college, we made the leap and bought Sweet Retreat. We enjoyed every moment we could spend there. It was our happy place.

In the summer of 2016, we sold our permanent residence and became full time Islanders.

Jim & Ann O'Connor purchased this house in 2008

Sweet Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This delightful 3-bedroom, 2-bath home is located on the quiet end of Main Street, surrounded by canals, ponds, marsh grasses, and abundant wildlife. The house is well-appointed. Everything you need is already there, except for personal items (sheets, towels, and toiletries). Sip coffee on the front sun deck or the screened back porch. Build a fire in the fire pit and eat at the picnic table, or dine in the kitchen nook or the full dining room. The property has ample parking and is convenient to everything in town. The landlords are fully cooperative and totally nonintrusive. We couldn't have picked a better vacation home, and we couldn't have enjoyed ourselves more. Jim & Sue

Wonderful Chincoteague Escape

  • 5 of 5

Sweet Retreat is a beautiful and comfortable home in a quiet corner of Chincoteague. There were four of us in our party, but the property would easily have held six. The kitchen was well supplied, the beds were comfortable, and the house was surprisingly spacious, having multiple sun porches and nooks allowing everyone to find a quiet spot of their own. The house is located only about a mile from the center of town. We happened to be there during a winter nor'easter, so we didn't get to enjoy the backyard, but it looked very inviting, and would definitely be a favorite place to be in warmer months. We would definitely hope to stay here again on future trips to the island.

awesome & so accommodating!

  • 5 of 5

The house was so wonderful and full of all the things you would need to make yourself feel right at home. The kitchen had all the cooking pots, pans, dishes & even a great selection of spices. There is a local place, Ray's Shanty, that we purchased the most delicious seafood and decided to make home cooked meals instead of going out. The house was roomy enough for us and so clean. When the sun was shining the house was so bright & shiny! The fire pit was so welcoming, but the wind and cold prevented us from making our fire. We toured around and were able to shop for souvenirs and then we went looking for the famous ponies...we saw them both days that we went looking for them and that was exciting. We also went to the light house and walked around on the paths. This house is in a great location for walking around also. We were so happy that we found this house. Thanks for allowing us to stay at your beautiful home and we look forward to coming back again!

Property was clean and well-supplied!

  • 5 of 5

Sweet Retreat was just that - a wonderful place to get some much needed R&R. The cottage is comfy, well appointed, and thoughtfully stocked. Could not have been more pleased with the quality of the property or the ease in which I was able to book and communicate with Jim and Ann.

Cute and lots of light

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the house. It was clean and nicely decorated. Most surprisingly, it was better stocked than we expected -- coffee making supplies, spices, cleaning and laundry supplies, etc. That always saves trips to the store for little incidentals. The house was great for relaxing. We spent an entire day reading on the back sun porch, even though it was late December! The kitchen was roomy and easy to use for cooking. We had a very peaceful and easy week!
