Boca Grande Shores Number Six
In considering Boca Grande for your vacation, fishing trip, or just a weekend get-away, you've found the quietest and most friendly spot on Florida's southwest coast. Although easy to reach by car, train (Amtrak to Tampa) or air (to Tampa, Sarasota, or Ft. Myers), Boca Grande is off the beaten path; a quiet island you can drive to.
We've been coming here since the early '70's, drawn by the beautiful beaches, the Gulf and inland waters teeming with fish and birds, and the variety of things to do. We picked our home in Boca Grande Shores when there were only empty lots. The site is beach front, but gentle sand dunes provide privacy and seclusion. The pool is at the side of the house, so it's easy to check on your family at the pool from the living room or rear bedroom windows. One of the advantages of Boca Grande Shores is that it contains the only homes on that particular stretch of road - across the street is a state preserve. As a result, the beach is very private, and this particular stretch is quite wide, so there's room to fly a kite, or play catch, volleyball or tag without disturbing the folks sunbathing, swimming or collecting shells at the waterfront. Our home is fully stand-alone, not a condo or villa. We think you will appreciate the privacy and quiet.
The island bike path accommodates not only bikes, but walkers and golf carts. It parallels the road at the entrance to Boca Grande Shores. To the south are the light house, a large state park, and a great beach-front restaurant and snack bar; to the north is "town", with shops, lots of dining options, and a great ice cream shop. Either way, it's a short half-mile trip, and can be made on the beach one way, and path the other way.
As the original owners, we were able to add a few extras to our house, which everyone seems to appreciate. There's an extra window in the upstairs guest bedroom to give cross-ventilation and a view of the pool. The sun deck off of the master bedroom has a wood deck and railing for comfortable relaxing and sunning. For those cool winter and fall evenings, there's a wood-burning fireplace in the living room. There's a small balcony off of the downstairs guest bedroom, so your guests can sit outside in the evening in their own private space. The downstairs screened porch has a paddle fan and good lighting for a comfortable card game, or just relaxing.
Some of our family's many favorite memories and activities are:
Seeing children's delight when they see the spiral staircase.
Waking up to the sound of surf from the Gulf through the screened patio door from the master
Taking an early morning walk on the beach, seeing the surf fishers - they're always happy to visit and tell you what they're catching.
Having breakfast or coffee under the paddle fan on the gulf-front screened porch.
Walking through the dunes to the beach to enjoy games, sunning, shelling, swimming and bird-watching.
Coming back from the Gulf to a warm outdoor shower.
Fishing! One year we enjoyed a memorable outing tarpon fishing with a professional guide and chartered boat. Other years: back-water fishing with or without a guide, or just dropping a line off a pier.
Meeting the shrimp boat for fresh Gulf shrimp to cook on the grill.
Watching the pelicans.
Relaxing on the sun deck outside the master bedroom's patio doors.
After taking the island-long path to an ice cream shop, a restaurant, or a stroll in town, continuing farther to the county fishing pier, or stopping at one of the many scenic views of the bays and back waters on the back side of the island.
" Enjoying the solitude of having only a state preserve across the road.
" Rainy days reading, doing puzzles, playing games. There's a supply in the house, which changes constantly as departing guests add to the collection.
" Starting the charcoal, going to the beach for sundown, and then returning to cook dinner on the grill.
" Returning to the beach in the evening for spectacular star-watching.
