The Mouse House is a favourite with couples who want to escape for a few days. it has an open plan chalet feel. Downstairs is one large room divided into sitting room and kitchen/diner. The open-tread stairs lead up to a large bedroom/dressing room area with a superking sized bed. The room also has fabulous view over the garden and swimming pool. PLEASE NOTE May & June 2018, the Mouse House is receiving a fabulous makeover. New bathroom with walk-in shower, much more storage in the dressing area , new kitchen & complete redecoration throughout. Thanks to these improvements, we can now offer sleeping for a family of 3! This will mean all in the same bedroom but we now have a put-up bed for a child which can be used in the dressing room.

Higher House Cottages
Honeysuckle Cottage and The Mouse House are 2 cottages nestling in the lea of the Quantock Hills. They have fabulous views of the surrounding countryside, including the Vale of Taunton, Exmoor and the Black down hills. This is a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The swimming pool is shared by both cottages and is in a sheltered courtyard which is part of the Higher House Estate. Higher House was originally a 17th century farm, extended in the 1920s by Mary Ellis, daughter of motor car magnate, Evelyn Ellis. Mary was the first speed trial racing driver in the UK. In the summer of 2018 both cottages were extensively renovated. New bathrooms, flooring and kitchen upgrades have been added and the cottages repainted throughout. Plantation shutters have been added to give total light control and add a very current feel to the interiors. The cottages have their own garden and sit in 8 acres of land which climb the Quantock Hills. You can picnic and enjoy stunning views and sunsets here.

About Jenny Mulhall
I’m a retired actress, looking after my disabled husband. We were both fully active when we arrived here in 2006 which is when we did many improvements to Higher House. It’s a wonderful property in a stunning location and we never tire of being here.

Why Jenny Mulhall chose Taunton
We fell in love with Higher House as soon as we saw it. It’s wonderful position, unusual layout and resemblance to splendid Lutyens architecture which we have always admired. The cottages were an added bonus and presented us with a way of running Higher House & it’s 8 acres. A Michelin starred pub 5 minutes walk away, also helped!

Jenny was lovely and cottage was cute and clean - we enjoyed our stay.
Lovely place to stay
Really enjoyed our few days away staying at Mouse cottage! Wonderful area to be in with some stunning views!
Lovely cottage in beautiful setting
We enjoyed a lovely stay at the Mouse House. The house had everything that we needed. Great swimming pool which we used every day. Also had the use of a garden and tennis court. A perfect cottage for two people.
A stunning cottage, with some recent renovations, in a beautiful part of the world!
This was our second visit to the Mouse House and we were once again welcomed with a very thoughtful basket of goodies from Jenny, including a fresh loaf of bread! The downstairs renovations include new flooring, bigger fridge (much better) and a cosy fire, not needed as we were there during the stunning heatwave (or summer!). Jenny was as ever accommodating and welcoming. We will be back!
Dot & Rupert - it was delightful to see you once again and in this Riviera heat wave! I’m always pleased when the pool can be fully used so it was great fun seeing your children having a good time. Thank you for leaving the cottage in such good order and we look forward to the next time! Jenny
Lovely cottage in idyllic countryside. Jenny could not have been more accommodating. Comfy bed.
I had a lovely stay, it was perfect for having the children and their friends round and Jenny was so accommodating. It's a comfortable cottage in a beautiful setting with everything required to make the perfect Sunday roast. As per previous comments the bed is super comfy and the bedroom tastefully furnished. I will be back.
A nice place to explore the area
The views were wonderful. There are some very beautiful grounds to walk in and the tennis court is a nice touch. The setting of the cottage is very attractive. The shower is lovely
from the description and photos in here I thought the cottage would be ideal for a romantic break. However the property looks very tired from inside. Most of the furniture is old and saggy. The bed is two single beds together- not very romantic! The pillow are rock hard.
This place would be much lovelier and much more worthy of the price if it underwent a lick of paint, some new carpets and update the tired old furniture. We spent as much find out exploring as we could.
The local pub the rising sun does some spectacular food at reasonable price with great customer service
I'm really sorry that Dan & Michaela were disappointed with the Mouse House. This is the first time that we have received such comments about the appointment of the cottage and so all the points they raise will certainly be addressed. Just to add, the bed is a superking size and only three years old. All beds of this size tend to be 2 single divans but of course properly connected.
West Bagborough looks out onto Exmoor National Park. Its true location is the Quantock Hills which was the first ever area of Outstanding Natural Beauty created in 1957 in the UK. The area offers spectacular views and walking across the 12 miles of the Quantocks which eventually lead to the coast at East Quantoxhead. This area is famous for the time the poets Wordsworth and Coleridge lived here. Coleridge lived in a cottage only 4 miles away in the lovely village of Nether Stowey. You can follow the walk he took while writing many of his poems. There are many beautiful old houses and gardens to visit, as well as enjoying the coast with its site of scientific interest at Kilve.
