The municipality of Atibaia, just 65 kilometers from the capital, has the second best climate in the world, behind only Davos, Switzerland. The data is from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). The pleasant climate, which revolves around 19 degrees and relative humidity of 80%, attracts tourists from all regions of the Country: some go in search of tranquility to escape the bustle of the city and enjoy the well-deserved rest, nature and fresh air. On the other hand, there are those who go in search of thrills in the heights for the practice of free flight, especially, hang glider and paraglider.
For these two publics, the main attraction of the city is the Big Stone. At 1,150 meters of altitude and 200,000 square meters of surface, Pedra Grande is compared to the great shrines that exist throughout the world, such as Machu Pichu (Peru), Grand Canyon (United States) and the pyramids of Egypt. The place is a meeting point for those who seek inner peace and just want to contemplate the city from the top as well as extreme sports fans. Pedra Grande is considered one of the best free-flight ramps in the region. Among the main sports practiced are the hang glider and the paraglider. If you've never done a free flight, but want to feel that sense of freedom and lots of adrenaline, the chance is this: several instructors offer flights to those who have never practiced the sport. The access to Pedra Grande is at km 65 of Highway D. Pedro I.
Another tip for those who are in search of excitement is the Atibaia Station, which offers a climbing circuit for adults and children with 21 activities, zipline and 12 meter high rappel tower. Then, to lower the adrenaline, the tourist can do Maria-Smoke rides, get to know the railway museum and the restaurant shed. In the latter, the English locomotives of 1881 and 1890, an American locomotive of 1893, passenger cars, luggage, mail, administrative, dormitory and restaurant, and one of a tram of 1907 are exhibited.
Back to the past
And, let's talk about the past, take a trip back in time, visiting the João Batista Conti Municipal Museum, the Rosário church and the Casarão Júlia Ferraz. The first was built in 1836, to house the public jail and the city forum. Today, the museum exposes rare documents from the time of Brazil Colony and Empire, in addition to old photos of the city and its residents. The church of the Rosary was built by slaves prevented from attending the traditional church of the city, the church Saint John the Baptist. The work was completed in 1817. A few years ago, it started to be the stage of presentations of choirs and erudite music. The church Saint John the Baptist was erected in 1665, in the lands of Jerônimo Camargo, founder of the city. It houses several architectural and artistic treasures, such as Baroque images and a panel painted in 1911 by Benedito Calixto.
Another period construction is the Casarão Júlia Ferraz - unique residential property that was preserved in the city. In 1975, the house was listed by the Condephaat, and considered, as of this date, patrimony of the State.
In touch with nature
For tourists who go in search of more contact with nature, such as a pedal boat ride or a walk, the option is the municipal park Edmundo Zanoni. With 38 thousand square meters, it has a large green area with a large variety of flowers and a bird nursery. The site also houses the Museum of Natural History and the Craftsman's Hall.
Other points very visited by the tourists are the Lake of the Major and the Dam of the Plant. The lake has a jogging track, the town's spa and sports fields such as football and volleyball. The dam, which was built in 1928, is located in an Environmental Preservation Area (APA). The place is suitable for water sports and boat trips.
Strawberry and flowers feast
Held almost 30 years ago, the Strawberry and Flowers Festival takes place in September at the Edmundo Zanoni Park. During three weekends, around 100,000 tourists visit the party and delight in traditional stalls offering fresh fruit and a variety of pastries such as pies, buns, cakes and mousses. The party also has presentations of folk groups from various countries like Italy, Japan and Germany.
