2 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom Cottage, Sleeps 4-5
About Gary Hughey
I have lived in the area for 20 years and have always dreamed of owning a place on the water. I am lucky enough to have found the perfect spot and own a piece of paradise. I love sharing this property with others and see the joy they get from being there. I'm an engineer by day and love going out to the cottage as often as possible. Like you, I need a vacation and I am lucky enough to get to retreat to a perfect location.
Gary Hughey purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Gary Hughey chose Maple City
This is very close to Traverse City where I both work and live. Leelanau County is one of the most beautiful places in the country and on top of that this cabin nearly boarders Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I have many excellent memories as a young person visiting the Dunes for the challenging dune climb with my friends. They always wanted to see how fast they could climb to the top! Try it, it will be day to remember!
What makes this Cottage unique
When this was built, they put it very close to the water. 12 feet past the end of the deck is the water's edge, making the cabin feel like an extension of the lake. There is a fire pit in between the cabin and the water for evenings sitting around a fire by the water. This cabin creates unique opportunity to enjoy the closeness of the water and all the amenities necessary to be comfortable.

Cute albeit aging property. The highlight is obviously the lakefront location. The building itself and all amenities are very old and worn, but the price seemed fair enough to put up with this. Dont forget your soap and shampoo as they weren't provided.
Beautiful views and great location
The cabin is directly on the lake and the sunset and stars were gorgeous. The location is also perfect - equidistant from Glen Arbor, Leland and Lake Leelanau. Also, bike trails are now super easily accessible to take you to Sleeping Bear Dunes and the pizza and brunch restaurant across street is great.
Cabin met our basic needs. As noted in previous reviews, water is pretty smelly so fine for shower but get bottled to drink (also remember to bring shampoo as there was not any and we had to buy). There is no HVAC. While there were plenty of space heaters to accommodate cold, it was unusually warm in late July and the cabin was pretty stuffy and only one very small and very dirty fan to cool down the place. Would definitely suggest a $20 box fan or two that would fit easily in the closet for when needed to make it a bit more comfortable. Rowboat is a nice addition although for those staying longer than a few days, a canoe or kayak would be nice to have. All in all though, it was what we expected and a good jumping off spot to visit the whole peninsula.
We had a great time! The cabin was very clean and neat. The bed was very comfortable! I would definately come back again!
Location is perfect. This was our 3rd time staying here over , the last 5 years. While meeting our needs, it would be nice to see a few updates (stove, fridge, ceiling fans). Again our needs were met and we enjoyed our stay.
Sleeping Bear Getaway
This was a perfect cabin to stay in for its beautiful lakeside setting and proximity to the Dunes. Lots of great stuff within a 15 to 20 min drive. Market 22 right across the street has excellent food/pizza. Just a note, you'll want to take some gallon jugs of water to drink as the water has a very strong mineral? (Not quite sulfur) taste and smell. It was fine for everything, we made coffee etc, no issues, but if you drink straight out of the tap it might bother you. The cabin was cozy and we had a fire in the firepit. Overall, great stay.
This cottage is the perfect location , close to sleeping Bear Dunes and travers city. We had a great time the view off the deck is just beautiful , and the water is perfect for the kids to swim on there own while we sat at the fire pit. I was pleasantly surprised with how clean the inside of the cottage was, and that it had everything we needed to enjoy our stay . The only downside for me was the lack of furniture in the living area , it’s not so bad when your out side the whole time , however we had a few rain days and spent more time then we wanted inside. Overall I hope to return next summer .
