About Gunilla and Jimmy
Originally from Sweden, my husband and I fell in love with Foz do Arelho. We enjoy travelling and meeting new people, yet come back to Foz time and time again as a place to relax and get back to nature.
Gunilla and Jimmy purchased this Villa in 2007
Why Gunilla and Jimmy chose Foz do Arelho
The relaxed lifestyle, stunning beaches, clear waters, friendly locals and locally produced food won us over. We lived in the villa for a couple of years and enjoyed it immensely. It holds a very special place in our hearts.
What makes this Villa unique
The villa feels like a home - furnished so that we could live here with comfortable beds, leather sofas, handmade wooden furniture and all of the 'creature comforts' needed for an enjoyable stay. The villa is modern and spacious, with a private back garden and large horizon swimming pool. The house is part of a condominium of 4 villas, and we enjoy being part of this safe and welcoming environment. The swimming pool and balcony overlook the lagoon and it's just a short walk to the beach and village. The sunsets in Foz are unbeatable. Being in the villa makes us smile - we love it and hope you do too.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Well equipped & maintained property Walking distance to a large choice of restaurants & the beach
Very enjoyable stay! The only downside is at this time of year both the front & back gardens are in shade from about 3.45pm Kitchen extremely well equipped 2 small supermarkets close by which have everything you need Good choice of restaurants within walking distance though at this time of year it was a bit hit & miss as to what was open when.
Beautiful, well appointed villa with good sized bedrooms & fabulous pool & outside space; perfect!
We loved everything about this accommodation. The villa is beautifully appointed with elegant, practical furniture and lovely decor. All the rooms are well proportioned so there was no concern about space and there are two bathrooms, one shower room and an additional WC. The stairwell, with its huge windows, was a real favourite. You could happily spend time anywhere in the house so it was perfect for our party of 5, with three adults and two boys aged 13 and 10. The outside space was ideal too. We had many meals in the terrific yard at the back of the villa. It was a warm sun trap which necessitated a sunshade in the middle of the afternoon. The space in front of the villas was skilfully arranged and again, perfect for our family because, in the week we booked, we were the only residents to use the superb pool. Our boys loved splashing around.
As a location,Foz do Arelho could not be more perfect. Its offer of both the Atlantic beach and the lagoon is priceless. We spent four days on the beach (making use of the chairs, windbreakers and sun shades kindly made available by Jimmy and Gunilla) and wandered around the seafront on many occasion. The place is something special; the village centre has its own relaxing charm and the beach area so lovely to stroll around. Walk further along and up over the bluff to enjoy magnificent views of the Atlantic and the amazing panorama of the Obidos Lagoon. We also took a trip to the beautiful walled settlement of Obidos, went to Lisbon for the day and to the markets in Caldos one morning. All are close. We took a drive to the other side of the lagoon to walk on the quieter beach and to gaze back over to Foz do Arelho.
This genuinely was our perfect holiday and we intend to return as soon as we can. Seduced by the visual beauty of the place, made to feel so comfortable by the simple luxury of the villa and mesmerised by the tranquil relaxing aura of the village, we, just a little bit, fell in love.
Your writing fills our hearts with joy. We are happy to be part of your great holiday and look forward having you as our guests again.
Wish you a lovely end of this summer, Jimmy & Gunilla
comfortable family accomodation
we enjoyed our stay at the villa, it was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed, beds were comfortable showers were great , nice and powerful and plenty of hot water, kitchen was fully equipped and had everything we needed, the only thing missing that would be handy were some fans, while we were there it was humid and warm and a fan in the bedroom at night would have made sleeping more comfortable, we did open the doors on the first night but were savaged by mosquitos, so kept it shut after that, sleeping was uncomfortable so a fan would have made such a difference. Regarding the tv I thought it strange that it only worked if plugged through a laptop, we didn't bring one so TV was out of use and would have been good to amuse the boys on rainy days. Overall we enjoyed our stay here and found it a short stroll to the beach supermarkets and restaurants. so it was handy for everything.
Dear Lorna, good idea with a fan. We will buy one. Sorry that the TV didn’t work your week. Has never happened before. We have a lot of channels and DVD with several films. Anyway we have bought a new TV now.

A lovely, spacious villa in a great location
We were really impressed by the villa, which is extremely spacious - there was plenty of room for 6 of us (4 adults and 2 children). The villa is located in a small complex of just 4 properties. This meant it was lovely and quiet and we always had the pool to ourselves (at least the kids did, the adults found it a little chilly!). The house was really clean and well maintained. The villa is located a short way up the hill from the beach. The walk to the beach was short and pleasant and the beach bars were lovely and very well priced. We loved the lagoon - it was clean and safe if a little bracing! We also went down to the surf school (escola de velo) and hired canoes and paddleboards, which was fun. We had a couple of really nice barbecues during our stay; we found meat prices at the local butchers to be very reasonable. We also enjoyed eating out and found the prices of local restaurants to be amazingly good. We all recommend the local clams. We didn't hire a car and found that this wasn't a problem. There are plenty of supermarkets and food shops in walking distance and we were able to catch a bus into Caldas de Rainhas. When we return (which we will) we will hire a car though as this was a beautiful area and we would like to explore further. Next time we will make sure we learn more Portuguese before we come as not everyone spoke English (which we thought was great - we know a lot more Portuguese now than we did a couple of weeks ago). The weather during our stay could have been better - there was some mist and cloud on a few days. However, it was still lovely and warm and we all came home tanned and relaxed. All communication from Gunilla and Jimmy was great and we found the welcome guide really helpful. Thoroughly recommend and look forward to returning.
Foz do Arelho is a pretty and tranquil Portuguese village with the Atlantic Ocean and Obidos Lagoon on its doorstep. The water in the lagoon is calm and warmer, ideal for families and perfect for swimming. The beaches of Foz do Arelho are breathtaking with an unspoilt coastline. Lagoon based water sports such as sailing, kite surfing and kayaking are popular in Foz do Arelho - equipment can be hired from Escola de Vela da Lagoa and lessons are available. Foz do Arelho has a large selection of restaurants, cafés and bars serving local delicacies in the village and overlooking the beach.
Foz do Arelho is conveniently located only 1 hour from Lisbon. The historic towns of Caldas da Rainha and Obidos are within a 10 minute drive of Foz. Caldas da Rainha has something for everyone; a daily farmer's market, boutique shops and restaurants, cafes, bowling, cinema, tennis, supermarkets and a beautiful park and lake. The historic and picturesque walled town of Obidos has cultural events and festivals all year round.
The countryside around Foz do Arelho makes for fabulous walking and cycling. There are also several world class golf courses nearby, including Praia del Rey and Golden Eagles.
