Premium Custom Home close to Yosemite

Property Details

Updated: Oct 9, 2016
3 Bedroom, 2 Bath Custom Home Close To Yosemite and Mariposa.

This newly constructed custom home is just 45 minutes from Yosemite and 1 mile from the historic gold rush town of Mariposa.

Upscale, comfortable and clean, the Oak Meadows House will accommodate 6 people in bedrooms, 2 in the sleeping loft and 2 more in the TV room for up to 10 people total.

It has an easy living, open floor plan with plenty of space to visit, enjoy meals together, or just rest up from the day's adventures.

Historical downtown Mariposa is 1 mile away. Visit the California State mineral museum, or the State's oldest operating courthouse. There are ample shopping opportunities, a variety of restaurants and many excellent antique stores and boutiques.

Public transportation (YARTS) from Mariposa is a convenient, stress-free way to travel to Yosemite. Bus fare includes admission into the park.

The Oak Meadows House is designed from top to bottom as a 'green' building.

It has a passive solar design that was built into the hillside complete with radiant floor heating. The electricity is produced by photo-voltaic panels and the grey water is distributed to the landscape.

There is a convenient recycling center in the kitchen, and the kitchen green waste are composted to improve the garden's soil health.

Recycled redwood was used to create shade trellises to mellow the summer sun on the east side of the house.

There is now a culinary herb garden for our guests to add fresh flavor to their meals, and an organic vegetable garden to browse. (No promises, seasonally dependent)

We are intent on creating a peaceful, relaxing and healthy space for you to enjoy before and after visiting the wonders of Yosemite National Park.

About the Owner

My Name is Al Palisca. My son, brothers and I developed this land and built this house. It is my home.

I moved to California from Pennsylvania in 1978 to explore and enjoy Yosemite National Park. I worked for the National Park Service in Yosemite for 27 years, married and raised two children here and just love it!

I currently live in Prague, Czech Republic for 6-months of the year, and am making my home available to travelers to the Yosemite area while I am away.

Gorgeous, unique, comfortable house with many beautiful touches. Lovely location (after the drive up the road): delightful in early mornings. Mike was a great "host": friendly, helpful. Will definitely look to stay again next time visiting the area

Perfect home for a getaway near Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 adults enjoyed our recent stay at The Oak Meadows home. The house was more than we expected with so many extras- beautiful kitchen was equipped to feed our group, bedrooms were spacious, beds and linens were comfortable, outdoor seating areas were used for early morning coffee and late afternoon relaxation. Mike was an amazing asset to our trip- he gave us ideas for hikes and eating out and was always available when we had questions. We enjoyed our visits with him and the dogs. This house should not be missed for any group planning to visit the Yosemite area.

Great Location and Great House!

  • 5 of 5

We are a little late in writing this review. We were in the Bay area with some good friends for a wedding. After the wedding we wanted to spend some time in Yosemite to do some hiking and to see the waterfalls in the spring. We were torn between the tourist accommodations in the park or renting a house just outside the park. VERY glad we chose the house. The house and the setting are so wonderful that it could be tempting not leave the property and just sit on the side porch and watch the world go by! When we arrived we were greeted by the property manager Mike and the very friendly house dogs. Mike is a wonderful host and he and his brother are a wealth of information on the park and the surrounding area. I really can't say enough great things about our stay that hasn't already been said by other reviewers. If you have the chance to stay here... do! You won't be disappointed!!! Thanks to Mike for making our stay a very memorable one!

wonderful stay in Oak house Meadows in Mariposa

  • 5 of 5

We arrived late after a very long and busy journey from San Francisco and received a warm welcome from Mike the property manager, who lives right next door .He was able to give us a tour of the property and show us how everything worked .The house was beautiful, so clean and comfortable ,well organised and has everything you can need.

We loved the kitchen area and open plan living , we had lovely organic products to use and could access the herb garden and vegetables .

Mike would come and check we were okay and our son looked forward to his visits with his dogs Kita and Bobby, who were very friendly.

We would have liked to stay for longer ,as mariposa was a lovely town with lots of shops and restaurants and a big supermarket.

The house was about a 45 minute drive away from Yosemite , on a straight road , very quiet with superb views and thoroughly relaxing.

The owners have been a joy to book with, professional and efficient and helpful.

I can thoroughly recommend this beautiful home to all future renters.

Best holiday rental ever!

  • 5 of 5

I really don't know where to start! We have stayed in many rental homes over the years, but never one as amazing as this. Firstly as others have said, Mike is a warm lovely, friendly host who is there if you need him, but is not if you don't! The house and kitchen in particular was so well equipt, with so much attention to detail. Plenty of everything you could ever need. Great barbecue and adjacent herb and vegetable garden. Beds very comfy, linen good quality. I could go on.... One word of warning, if any of your party suffer travel sickness make sure you have medication. The road to Yosemitie is very challenging for them!

If you are looking to book this house, do not hesitate. It is the best ever!!!

GREAT property! Loved the house.

  • 5 of 5

I can only say great things about our stay. Mike was wonderful and we enjoyed visiting with him each evening on the front porch. The beds were very comfy, the linens and other home supplies were perfect. Only stayed 3 nights and we all agreed we could have stayed much longer!

Enjoyed fresh herbs and tomatoes from the kitchen garden. No a/c, but the swamp cooler kept the house very cool, even in 108 degree weather!

From the Owner

Mariposa is a wonderful place to live, work and play. The weather is fantastic and there are many outdoor activities close at hand. The Oak Meadows House is located in the town of Mariposa which sits in the wintertime sweet spot being above the fog and below the snow. The slower, rural nature of Mariposa County is appealing in a wholesome and fulfilling way. Come and unwind, relax and feel the peacefulness of the rural lifestyle while you explore Yosemite and the surrounding area. My brother Mike is the on-site property manager, greeter and maintenance person for the Oak Meadows House. He lives in a separate studio apartment on the land with his two friendly dogs. His presence provides exceptional security, and a knowledgeable local person to help with whatever you might need during your stay, be it driving directions, maintenance needs, or recommendations on what to see or where to dine.

From the Owner

This plans for this house was originally designed by David Arkin and Anni Tilt as a 4 bedroom Straw Bale house. The original house was constructed in Mill Valley, California in 2000 as a straw-bale house and was named 'Natural Habitat'. I modified the plans to allow the house to be built into the hillside here in Mariposa. The Straw Bale walls were replaced with insulated concrete walls that could withstand burial in the earth. The following description of the house is from the Healthy Home Plans website. 'Natural Habitat is featured in the book, 'The New Strawbale Home', received the Western Home Award from Sunset magazine, and was also featured in 'Real Simple Magazine'. This stunning and inspirational family home does not isolate its residents from one another or from the surrounding environment. The architects, David Arkin & Anni Tilt, a husband and wife team, conceived of and designed this home to give the residents a sense of being at home in nature. This four-bedroom home is a showcase of environmental innovations, beginning with its modest size. The smaller claim on resources of all kinds, is where building green really begins. At 1,860 square feet, it is 470 square feet smaller than the average new American house, yet it feels open and unconfined and more than big enough for a family of five. The kitchen, living and dining areas share one generous space with differing ceiling heights, from an intimate 8 feet to a lofty 16 feet, to define each area. While compact, the floor plan still includes a variety of intimate spaces - a separate entryway, a laundry room, and a window covered office alcove behind the kitchen - providing private places to retreat to.' This house is simply a joy to live in with beautiful and abundant natural light filling the living space. The surrounding land is peaceful and private, yet only 1 mile from the town of Mariposa, where you will find everything you need for your stay
