A pretty cottage with king size bedroom, vine views and swimming pool
- english, french
Mike and I lived near Manchester, England for most of our life together (which at the time of writing is 36 years!). We had four children, including twins and became very busy with our careers as an architect and business psychologist, respectively. However, we'd always yearned to live in another country and have some sort of adventure, hence our new beginning in France which began in 2015. We absolutely love our life here and most of all welcoming new guests and seeing them wind down, relax, enjoy their stay and sleep well in our beautiful holiday home paradise. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing people relaxing, away from the stresses and strains of their daily lives and being able to help them to do that. We're just living the dream :)
Penny purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why Penny chose Auriolles
We had been on holiday to different parts of France over the years with our children and so had explored many parts of the country. However, we had never been to the South West of France and so every year for about five years, we came over at least once a year and explored a 300 mile radius from where we are now. After doing all this research we fell in love with the area we now live in, mainly due to the stunning countryside which we prefer to that around the typical Dordogne area because of the multitude of vines. We had certain criteria on our 'house shopping list' both for ourselves and future guests, including: a roof, it had to have vineyard views, enough properties to renovate for holiday homes, close to airports and also close to great places to visit, including towns and cities. We found Cousserat within two weeks of looking and knew immediately it was the place for us. A place where we could live happily ever after but just as importantly a place where we knew guests could relax and enjoy themselves. It is so peaceful here but at the same time local amenities and spectacular sights and experiences can be accessed easily. The property is perfect - as an architect Mike could see a vision for the place which he began renovating almost immediately. There are old oak beams, fantastic fireplaces, stone walls and other old features that we are combining with modern amenities to make life easy and comfortable. Bliss!
What makes this Cottage unique
As well as all of the above, the poplar, mulberry and walnut trees found in the large gardens add so much character to the place. There are also two old barns here, one of which has an old, oak abri attached - abri is French for hangar or shelter. Looking through the abri the views across the local valley are amazing and all of this is what we first saw and fell in love with when viewing the property. A swimming pool was a fantastic added bonus and we knew this would be a superb place to relax during the warm summer months. Finally, the old farm house, cottages and barns are so quaint and the stonework and shutters are lovely that we couldn't work out what there wasn't to like. Cousserat used to be a wine farm and so there are old concrete wine vats in one of the barns and old oak animal stalls in the other. The place has so much character and charm we just knew it was the right place for us and our future guests.

Wonderful spotless gite! friendly hosts in beautiful setting. Excellent holiday.
Not long home from our wonderful family holiday at Mike & Pennys gite.
Excellent experience in all from great communication with Penny from day 1 where she was so helpful with regards to us bringing our toddler. Penny ensured we had all we needed to make our stay a home from home. In a lovely lovely location about an hour from Bordeaux and Bergerac. Easy to find.
We arrived to a warm welcome from both Penny & Mike where Penny showed us around the gite. We were delighted that the place looked just like the photos. So beautiful! Awesome to have a welcome basket of milk eggs bread etc.
Really clean property with all you could need. We loved the power shower and the towels were so cosy and thick!
What I liked was they had thought about what guests might like to do throughout the day in terms of sitting outside. So there is a table and chairs set up for breakfast watching the sun come up, a rattan furniture set for watching sunset...a hammock and more comfortable seating around too.
On our first morning in the gite I woke up and searched for my glasses, popped them on and looked out of the window above the bed. Wow. A window to heaven! Beautiful beautiful sunrise viewing window from bed. What a way to start the day. Then from the opposite window you have stunning views of the neighbouring vineyards.
Coffee machine, english tv, lots of local leaflets and info for days out provided. Desk fan in bedroom- appreciated.
The pool was spotless and my Husband enjoyed a lovely swim or two, sadly our toddler didnt brave the temp of it for a 2nd time! Can't be helped we should have timed it better and gone later in the day when the sun had been on it all day.
We enjoyed a few hours chatting with Mike & Penny and wine on the decking, very kind and interesting people.
Our son was absolutely ecstatic that there was a old tractor on the property grounds he admired it every single day then on the last full day we had there Mike offered to drive the tractor around so my son could see it in action. Truly made his holiday! Wow wow wow he said. Thanks Mike- things like that make special memories for me.
We highly recommend this gite for its cleanliness and friendly hosts in a lovely location. Our only tiny issue we found was the bed made a loud creak when you got up and would wake the other person up. However we didnt say anything at the time- if we had i am certain Mike would have looked at it for us. Choose this place you won't be disappointed! Merci beaucoup!!
Wow! Thank you for this detailed review Gemma, it really brings to life all the things you enjoyed about your stay with us. So sorry about the bed! It is a traditional French style bed made of solid wood - please rest assured that Mike has now fixed this problem. We're delighted that you enjoyed your holiday so much and hope to see you back here again one day - it was great to meet you. Best wishes, Penny & Mike
Sun soaked paradise....
We loved our stay in this beautiful gite. Definitely a home-from-home with everything you could possibly need for a (more than) comfortable stay. The place has a lovely high end finish and was spotlessly clean which was really appreciated. This, paired with a beautiful garden setting and fabulous pool and we will definitely be back for more.... sooner the better. Many thanks to Penny and Mike who were the prefect hosts.
Thank you for this wonderful review! We are so pleased to hear you were so happy at Le Peuplier. It was great to meet you, you were perfect guests and we hope to welcome you back again soon - Penny & Mike.
Mir hu wierklech gären Trefft Iech a mir si frou iwwerhaapt ze héieren datt Dir de Le Peuplier sou vill hat. Bis zur nächster Zäit! Penny & Mike
Peaceful and idyllic
The gite was spotless and decorated with an eye for detail. The garden and pool are very well maintained. Penny and Mike are lovely hosts, making sure you have everything you need. It was a relaxing holiday in a wonderful part of France.
Thank you for taking the time to write this positive review Lynn. It's so rewarding for us to hear that our guests have been able to relax on their well earned holidays. It would be great to welcome you back again some day! Best wishes, Penny & MIke
