Lisa Stotelmyre purchased this Castle in 2017
Why Lisa Stotelmyre chose Lake Arrowhead
We acquired the Castle at an auction. It was a sad Castle because it had been vacant since 2007 when the market crashed and the owners at the time let it go. The bank owned it and finally in 2017, put it up for auction. We discovered it while renovating another property in the area and were walking the dog in a new area. We couldn't get into the house but managed to climb up a ladder to look in a window and were amazed at what we views!! We were immediately captured. We were able to acquire the Castle at the auction and began renovations, finishing them just in time for Thanksgiving 2017. Why this property? It has majestic views that are priceless and it was built by a German engineer and is the most solid residence that I've ever experienced. The house was left with dishes, silverware, thousands of books, personal letters, and much more. We were able to get to the know the builders of the house through these letters (they passed away years ago), and we wanted to make it come alive again and share it with as many people as we can. A guest recently posted this review on another website. Here is what Pedro had to say..."Back in January, I wanted to give my father in law a life experience rather than merely participate in the event of celebrating his birthday this past April 7. The conundrum was this: What do you choose as an experience for a man that has pretty much done everything, has traveled much of the world several times, lives overlooking the blue Pacific from the Malibu cliffs, and is not much into senseless, materialistic consumerism or technology and tech gadgets, as we know them? I remembered that he once had told me that he at one point though of buying a secondary home in Lake Arrowhead, and that he loved the place. (Continued below under UNique Benefits)
What makes this Castle unique
I also remembered that he had not been to the area in at least 10 years, so I made it my goal to find a ‘perfect’ house for the entire family (6 of us, as the main nucleus) to celebrate and honor him, on or near the lake. When I set the parameters my search for the area, over 70 listings showed up as part of the search. It didn’t take much time for me, though. My eyes automatically fixated on the fourth listing. The views were simply mesmerizing and, until I actually arrived at The Castle this weekend, I thought that perhaps Photoshop had been an enhancer, if not a co-creator of such a magnificent setting! How very wrong I was and how very happy being wrong made me and my family! The views!!! YES, THE VIEWS!!! They are simply ridiculous from every window in this place and from every room! Including the bathrooms. Simply stunning! And outside. Oh, the surrounding environs…! Prepare to gasp here too at the breathtaking gorgeousness of the natural setting. If you are looking for spectacular, gasp and drop your jaw open majesty and beauty, then do not think too much or doubt at all: JUMP INTO DECISIVE ACTION and book this place as soon as you come across its listing! As if the Nature and the house itself as as a physical space were not glorious enough, a huge realization came to me as I went from room to room, inspecting, admiring and looking for something to perhaps dislike or improve upon… It became clear to me that The Castle is not a transitional lodging nor a rental space: THIS IS A HOME. An exquisitely conceived, decorated, maintained and lovingly cared for home! Everything here is top notch. Everything here is spotless. The attention to detail, and the extras in this home are as ridiculous as the views it boasts. I cannot extol Lisa’s role enough as the keeper and facilitator in this amazing experience that is The Castle at Lake Arrowhead.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date. 50% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
The house had magnificent views and in a quiet neighborhood.
The check in process was easy but make sure you read the welcome packet that owners email to you. It has great information about the house and the process. The location is awesome, close to the beach and about 45 min from Big Bear. We found had some minor issues but they were quickly resolved.
Good place if you're willing to risk it or don't mind that you're renting a condo
Close to zero communication from the owner (Adair/Lisa)...When I book vacation, I like to talk to the owner, ask for things to do and ask questions about the property. Not this time. Owner never bothered to respond. I decided to book anyways (place looked nice and I figured she's out of town or something). She wasn't, since she sent some generic emails saying that we'll get check in info 5 days before the trip...
Less than a day away from the trip and there's no check-in instructions, no address, no phone number or a name. I sent several emails via VRBO with same result - silence. Finally, I called VRBO and complained - I was going to cancel since it's a long drive with 2 babies for us. Apparently not - VRBO folks were nice, but they would not refund or rebook another property until we show up in Lake Arrowhead and realize that we don't have a place to sleep :-/ Then VRBO would apparently book us something that they would deem comparable, which is beyond silly) Anyways, apparently the owner didn't provide any contact info at all besides the email. VRBO was able to bug her and only then she sent check-in info. Again, no "sorry for delay" or response to any of my previous questions. But she sure did follow up a few times sending emails detailing all the penalties and fees.
So finally we get to the house, and there's another car right next to it. At first we though we got scammed, but then figured out that they split the house in 2 parts - top floors get rented out as this property, and the bottom as another property. Pretty shady way to advertise a house...Luckily our neighbors were quiet and we only ran into them a few times in the front yard so it didn't feel like renting a room in a dorm.
The house itself was nice, the views are great. Local property manager is great as well.
So we get home and about a week later I recall the deposit that I should get back - nothing refunded. Pinged the owner - surprise, surprise - never bothered to respond. Pinged VRBO and they explained that normally refund goes back after a week. Adair/Lisa made it 2 weeks. I got my deposit back after 2 weeks (still no communication from the owner).
Overall, the whole experience was a hair away from a feeling you get when getting scammed, and I'm happy it worked out for us. If you feel adventurous enough or want to get adrenaline flowing when your wife tells you "what the hell is going on dude, we need to leave soon and we got nowhere to go", then you will enjoy this place.
I am feeling sorry after reading this review that there was such a gap in communication. We have 8 properties and have been Superhosts & Premier Partners for almost 3 years and pride ourselves on great customer service . We've worked hard to make our process the best there is out there and everything we have done is by design. The Welcome info is accompanied by an extensive "Things to Do in Lake Arrowhead". I checked and it was sent along with the Welcome Info. The very first message we send state that we will send the information 5 days before check-in. The reason we send it 5 days in advance is because we found that if we send it earlier, most people are not ready to receive it earlier than that and it gets lost and forgotten. We also have a number of e-mail templates to include the FAQs and we did this to be proactive and not be in the situation where people feel they have to call us to ask questions - we discovered that we were answering the same questions over and over. In our messaging we have included our Property Manager's phone number (Kim) who is available 24 hours a day to take a call. It is with the same e-mail where you mentioned we include important fees (pet fees, etc.) It sounded like you were able to reach Kim and she answered your question. We also have another staff member, Adair who communicates with our guests and who monitors e-mails. Unfortunately we cannot pay a staff member for a full time position to be able to have a response time that is guaranteed to be within minutes or even hours. We did discover that VRBO removed our phone numbers from the website. They have decided to put themselves in the middle and guests must call them first and then they will call us. Personally I think this is a step backward in terms of efficiency, however, this is what they decided to do and yet another reason why our messaging is important in that we put Kim's number in the outgoing messages. The reason that it is not our phone number is because we are not in the area and cannot help in situations where Kim is much better equipped to address any questions or concerns. Most of all, I'm sad that our property only rated a 2 stars, given that we clearly did provide a number to call (Kim) within a reasonable time-frame (5 days) and she was able to answer your questions. She also would have given you our number if asked. We do not have anything to do with refunds. We have seen it take between 5-14 days for VRBO to process a refund.
Started out badly
We did not get info or an email on how to access the property and had no phone number to call. I had to call the general VRBO number and they called and said Adair would meet us. We waited in the driveway til she came. Especially in the beginning she was curt, had entry numbers written on a small paper and seemed annoyed that we did not get her email (service is limited up there). She let us in, but there was no paper work in the house and hard to read on our phones. We had already shopped and therefore were not informed that we had to buy our own wood. It was already dark for dinner and we could not find the lights for the kitchen, hidden under a ledge. Adair did bring firewood back and tried to be more accommodating but it did not feel welcoming. We were delayed getting in, but were not offered $20 bucks, as they would charge for a one hour early entry. The heat was off and Adair first told us it was controlled off site! which it turned out is wasn't but that left us without much confidence. We were also shocked that we needed a Roku no. and our own sign in when the property said it had a TV. After we settled in we found what we needed in the kitchen and the bedrooms, but I'd bring my own soap and shampoo. Once the clouds lifted we did enjoy our view of the lake.
Renee, I'm glad you enjoyed the view. I'm so sorry for the difficulty that you encountered getting oriented with the house. It sounds like the inconvenience could have been avoided if you had received the Welcome Information earlier. We provide it 5 days in advance of a guest arriving and we weren't aware that you didn't receive it until we received your call from VRBO. We don't provide a printed copy at the house because much of the information changes including items we provide, door codes, etc, and we want people to have the most up to date set of information. I've known Adair for years and she is extremely committed to making sure everything is ok for arrival. I believe that her "curtness" was actually concern and her interest in finding out what happened with the Welcome Information so she can make sure it doesn't happen again. We don't provide firewood but Adair ran back to her house and delivered you some that she paid for personally. We have a Nest thermostat, and it can be controlled remotely, but it shouldn't be a cause for concern. We just would like to know if for some reason it's not set properly and I'm sorry it wasn't when you checked in. I'm not understanding about a Roku, we provide Smart TVs, and this provides access to Neflix and a host of other options for viewing. We also always provide bath soap and shampoo and it is available in every bathroom. If you were having trouble, Adair or Kim could have helped if they were called. I noticed in the message history that Adair checked back with you the day after check-in to see how you were doing and there was no response. I also have to say that cell service in general is excellent at the house and around Lake Arrowhead in general. We've been up and running for a year and a half and have had no other negative comments about cell service. We appreciate your feedback and I wish we could have responded to you better and met your expectations. We will make sure we are following up to confirm that people are getting the Welcome Information, in this case I think it would have helped avoid your uneasiness arriving at the house. We want guests to feel comfortable at the house and comfortable calling us if they need something. We are here to help!
Our family wanted a peaceful mountain getaway for Spring Break that didn’t necessarily require skiing. The Castle was a wonderful charming house that accommodated our family’s needs. Thanks for sharing your wonderful house. It’s a jewel in the woods with amazing views. The only thing I would mention is that the house is tucked away from the main road and very secluded on a dead end street. I didn’t know that and was scary at first to drive into. But we got used to it.
Awesome stay at the Castle
My family and I enjoyed our stay at the Castle. The lake views were amazing, the home is clean and nicely maintained. The fully equipped kitchen was very convenient for our family. After an afternoon in the Village, we went back to the Castle and made a nice meal. It was the perfect weekend getaway!
Feel Like the King & Queen in the castle
Our stay here was wonderful. The cabin is not only large, but very clean and comfortable. The lake view is amazing, especially in the morning. It is short drive to the Village and market. The beds were very comfortable, so you will get plenty of rest. The home is located in a cul-dE-sac which is even better for privacy. I would definitely recommend the castle.
