4 Bedroom/ 2 Full Bathrooms in 250 acres of Pristine Nature

Imagine visiting the paradise of Costa Rica and having an incredible Caribbean Ocean view. The monkeys and toucans are right outside your windows. The 'Dragon House' is located in the Samasati Nature Retreat which is a gated community near the town of Puerto Viejo. This octagonal and spacious house offers three floors spanning 2000 square feet. The top level is a large loft with a king bed and a separate bedroom with a queen bed. The main floor is open and has a fully functional kitchen, dining area and living space. There is a private bedroom with 2 twin beds and a luxurious bathroom with a sunken shower with a full view to the jungle. The downstairs has a private entrance and includes a bedroom with a queen bed and full bathroom. The 'Dragon House' was built using local sustainable hardwood trees and has been a full time family residence. There is twice daily yoga from the retreat center, a spa, a jacuzzi, and a restaurant for those who would like to participate for an additional charge. There is also the possibility of waterfall tours, horseback riding and various beach activities are available for booking through the hotel as well. The drive to the beach is about 10 minutes and there is a shuttle available daily for those without a car for a nominal fee. The fact that the house is located on the mountain makes the temperature much more moderate and there is a continuous sea breeze! There is a stairway to walk up to the house from the car park. It has about sixty steps to bring you to the house on top of the ridge. Every day is an adventure for nature lovers, yoga enthusiasts, and animal lovers!!

What a great place to relax and unwind

  • 5 of 5

After spending a week in this jungle retreat, I had a hard time leaving. The yoga classes were first rate as was the cuisine at the restaurant. We took long walks each afternoon and fell asleep to the sounds of the monkeys.

Would go again in a heartbeat!

  • 5 of 5

Had never been to this area of the world and had been recommended to so do by many who had. What a gorgeous home; you can feel the love that went into creating it. I am a city gal at heart and not much of a jungle adventurer - my, how things change. One cannot help but fall in love with the lush jungle surroundings, the charm and beauty. The sounds! And was surprised at the easy drive to Puerto Viejo. Thank you for opening up my soul to new experience!

What a Nature Wonderland!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the Dragon House with its amazing ocean and jungle views. It was so peaceful and relaxing that we wished we could stay longer. The daily yoga that was offered by the nearby hotel was a great way to end the day. We took some excursions to the beaches in that area and found them to be absolutely beautiful! We hope to return there again one day soon...

I Wouldn't Recommend This Property for Exploring Puerto Viejo

  • 1 of 5

I have rented on VRBO for over 10 years & this is the only time I have had a disappointing experience. I feel bad writing this review, because my interactions with the owner via e-mail & phone were very nice. If someone is looking to stay on a property with a focus on yoga this maybe a good fit for you. I was looking for a home that would provide easy access to Puerto Viejo where I could explore a part of the world I had never been & will probably not have the chance to visit again.

That being said I feel the listing is misleading in a few areas. The photo of the jacuzzi is not at the house. It is at the hotel which is a 10 minute walk & you have to pay $5/day to use it, with all the other guests. I thought the pic implied it was private and at the house, it isn't. It isn't in Puerto Viejo, it is in Hone Creek, which when you factor in that it takes at least 10 minutes to get down the mountain to the base (by 4 x 4 vehicle only) & then an additional 10-15 minutes to drive to Puerto Viejo you are looking at around a half hour to get into town & only if you rent your own car. You can only rent a 4 x 4, so you are looking at over $50/day minimum. If you make the mistake of not renting a car you are given only four times to go up or down the mountain, the latest being 8:00 pm. Which puts you at the mercy of the hotel if you want to have the freedom of exploring on your schedule. If you are not there with a focus on yoga, there are better options in Puerto Viejo itself.

Their were issues at the house (water leaked through the skylight, mold surrounding a light fixture & mold/mildew on the sunken shower & fridge smelled rancid, etc). When we told the hotel, they said they cleaned the house the day before. When we convinced them to return to the house, they made excuses & finally resolved the issues (except the non-working ceiling fan). We were provided with three bath towels, no hand towels & when we asked the hotel for a roll of paper towel, we were told they don't provide that. You can not drink the water, so we had to pay for a jug of water as well. Mistakes happen, but how they were handled provided a catalyst to our frustration.

There were a handful of other things that I won't take the time to list, but they all added up to a bad rental experience. Puerto Viejo is a great community, the people are amazing, the activities are wonderful, just rent in town to make it easier on yourself.

Owner's Response: Well I can say that I was surprised to see these comments. As the reviewer says we had several nice conversations before their trip. I also went the extra step to help them get from San Jose to the property. The distance to the beach and Puerto Viejo was clearly explained as it is in the listing. I suggested renting a car, as it says on the property description ,and that there were 4x4 taxis available as well. If you are looking for the party scene of town then this is not the place to stay. We have had many renters and they have all found their way to balance being in the beauty of the jungle with going down to the beach . As far as the jacuzzi goes it is listed on the description as being part of the retreat center that can be used for a nominal fee. Water is precious in the jungle and I cannot imagine using that much water in a single dwelling. I did suggest they stop in a super market with the arranged transport from San Jose to get essentials for the visit such as water, etc.. If they had reached out to me via phone or email during the visit I would have done everything possible to resolve the issues. I am proud to offer this jungle paradise to renters. We have put our heart and soul into creating a space that is so much a part of nature. If you want to participate in yoga that's wonderful but it is also a great place to explore that whole area of the Caribbean!

Dragon House

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely stay here and couldn't ask for a better first time jungle experience. The house was gorgeous and emanates a vibe a relaxation. The view from the house was incredible and listening to the sounds of the jungle at night was a once in a lifetime experience.

The house had a fully functional kitchen and one of its highlights was the master bathroom in the main part of the house. The shower has a ceiling to floor window with a perfect view of the jungle. I had the unique experience of sharing my shower time with a Toucan right outside the window; pretty incredible!

Another highlight is the master bedroom. You wake up, sit up and have a view of the jungle, the mountains and the ocean. And, there's a deck off the bedroom that is a lovely spot to sit and enjoy your morning coffee and wake up on "jungle time". What more could you ask for?
