Your Chance To Experience Ranch Living And Local Culture . New World to explore

' loving life on the hill with the parrots'

Simply said a world class location and high quality accommodations awaits. The views are of 4 volcanoes(only site where this is possible on super clear days), the full stretch of the lake (24miles), and the surrounding wilderness of primary and secondary forest. It is awesome and inspiring.

Parrot Hill Guest Ranch is a small, 50 acre, working ranch at the end of the public road at the top of the mountain. The rolling hills back into the Monteverde Childrens Eternal Rain Forest to the South and is bounded on the East by Volcano Arenal National Park. The Rio Aguas Gatas (Cat Water river) separates us from the village of El Castillo to the west. Therefore it remains peaceful, quiet, safe, and fun. You will have private access to roam free with private trails to rivers and waterfalls. Literally 5,000 sg miles of Jungle out our back door. Expansive 360 views includes sunrise over jungle and Cerro Chato (extinct volcano) to sunset on the water . We are located in the heart of Volcano Arenal and Lake Arenal North Zone which means, close to all the exciting adventures such as zip line, hanging bridges, hot springs, white water, fishing, kayaking, river drifting, canyoning and miles of secluded forest trails literally out our back door.

Absolutely the best place for families traveling with children. My three kids(12-16) are friendly and helpful. They love to play and show your kids around the ranch. Most young ones love the farm animals and like to help feed and collect eggs or try your hand at milking .We can do guided Horseback trail riding tours (only $30 for our guest $50 public)) with free lessons for novice riders. Just wait until you meet our orphan wild parrot named 'Papuga'. He is hysterical and will make you smile and laugh for hours. A true life building cultural experience that they will never forget. Kids don't get bored here.

The Tarzan swing, climbing trees , playing with the ducks or horses can keep them busy. Happy exhausted children make for happy ,not so exhausted, parents . Best part is it's free entertainment for the little ones-

The house itself is quite nice being spacious and clean. Modern amenities, Wi-Fi, sat TV, fully equipped. Heavy use of exotic native hardwoods. We also build custom wood furniture(see the shop) so the home is well furnished with every thing you'll need. We have dedicated the villa to you,the valued guest, and we live close by in the original farm house built totally of wood over 40 years ago. This means you have privacy while at the same time we are close by if you need us.

The 2 story house is roomy with a combined living area of 2400+ sf. The floor plan features 5br/3bath/2kitchen/wrap around deck/dormitory

There is a lovely space called the 'sky bungalow ' which is connected to the top floor and served by a private entrance.

About the Owner

My name is Charles Keckler and I am 59yrs old, married with 4 kids. My wife ,Janet, is from Nicaragua and has an unbelievable life story of survival growing up during the Sandinista civil war in that country. My path is coming from a long career in the real estate biz ,in the US, to having the experience of ranching in Costa Rica has been a wonderful journey . My wife can teach you so much about natural herbal and medicinal plants and my children-ages 12-16 are great little guides. We really enjoy hosting visitors and especially families traveling with kids.

We had a great three days here! It was so lovely to have a great view of the Arenal Volcano and lake. We went kayaking, horseback riding, hiking and fun with the farm animals and the nature here.

Also, Charlie and the family were so friendly and helped us a lot. Thank you for this nice vacation.

great stay in mountain

  • 4 of 5

just came back from Parrot hill

group of 6 rented the whole place and didnt regret it

like a lot of reviews before , i must mention that long long bumpy road / driveway , it is pretty amazing , all we kept saying first night driving up was , are you kidding me ?

but next day looking at the expensive beautiful views , we thought it was well worth it

the place is large , family is friendly and are very helpfull

internet is very spotty ( borrowed hot spot from Charles ) which could also be a blessing with young adults or teenagers.. but i would reccommend doung your homework before you get there

it is a small working farm, which is cool , if you like animals , birds , critters , bunnies, dogs cats , butterflies, huge flying things , this is the place for you

Spectacular View Only Part of the Opportunity

  • 5 of 5

Too often, vacationers only experience local culture from afar. Parrot Hill offers full immersion. My wife, 4 kids, Mom, neice and I were thrilled to have such an opportunity. Charlie and his family were excellent hosts, enthusiastically engaging with us when requested and respecting our privacy when we were so inclined. We enjoyed hearing about Charlie's family history, dining on local favorites excellently prepared by Charlie's capable wife and learning about the flora and fauna of the surrounding area. Charlie had very useful and cost saving tips about all the local opportunities for entertainment, dining and recreation. While we enjoyed a variety of local adventures, my family agrees that the horseback/hiking trip to a local waterfall led by Charlie's sons, Edwardo and Leno, was the highlight of our time in Arenal.

Charlie and his family will take care of every need and offer a great opportunity to see and experience small town living in Costa Rica. We had a ball.

Wonderful! Just as expected.

  • 5 of 5

A big thank you to Charlie and his family. My family of five, along with my 70 year-old father recently spent three days here. We stayed in the upper portion of the house and the lower portion was rented out by another family. The house has beautiful wood work and is well maintained. We had beautiful views of the volcano each day. The location is atop a hill with a laid-back vibe. There were the owner's two dogs and cats roaming the land which was a delight for my children, however may not be everyone's taste. We enjoyed a twenty minute hike from the property to a waterfall and were greeted by fireflies during the return. We would have enjoyed staying longer. I would recommend to my friends and family.

A spectacular family experience!

  • 5 of 5

Accommodations were were very good for our three generation family of seven and the personal hospitality from Charlie and his family well exceeded our expectations – but the location and vistas are world-class.

Highlights would vary by individual but for us included 15 min of daily farm chores (eg gathering fresh duck and chicken eggs, feeding the 3 day old piglets), Soccer games with Charlie's family, enjoying the company of Charlie's talented family, hiking, horseback riding and swimming in private waterfalls in the rain forest, seeing sloths, toucans, monkeys and parrots - Papuga was great.

Bring good binoculars (FYI: small 2WD was sufficient in dry season but more clearance wouldn't hurt).

Excellent property and wonderful views, but getting there requires patience

  • 5 of 5

Once you get to the Parrot Hill, it is a paradise. Road to paradise is a challenge, but for many it would be worth it. While there, views are to die for, lodgings are nice, food is delicious, and Charles is a gracious host. There are a lot of things to do on the farm, especially for those with children. The horse ride and hike through the jungle is very interesting and rewarding once you walk beyond the waterfall. La Fortuna with all the entertainment is nearby, but getting to the farm is 9-10 km of road that may not deserve the word road in other parts of the world, but in Costa Rica it may be par for the course. Anyway, you wouldn't find views like that from any paved road destination, so go for it.

Family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

Charlie and his family were very welcoming. We would strongly recommend having them cook a meal for you, amazingly delicious. View of the volcano and lake are breathtaking and hearing the monkeys was a special delight! A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommend for the drive up the road. Hiking to their private waterfall on horseback, near by zip lining, and fishing are few activities we enjoyed. It is a true cultural Costa Rican experience!

From the Owner

Too beautiful to ignore. I couldn't stop dreaming of it and the challenge to learn another way to live, another language and culture. I was like a pioneer on this mountainside and managed to develop the road, power, and water resources to establish the ranch. Now we enjoy sharing it with other travelers.

Parrot Hill is a small working ranch situated just outside the quaint village of El Castillo. Surrounded by 3 national parks/reserves this spot is ideal for nature lovers. High altitude (2700+ft) means it is fresh and cool and always green. Close by are various activities to keep you smiling. Sky Trek zip lines and hanging bridges, the largest live Butterfly and snake exhibits, hot springs, fishing -and more. In the pueblo are several fine dining establishments, including Howlers bar and grill.

We offer horseback riding which has been popular along with guided hiking tours to the volcano , rivers and Waterfalls and the forest. Cost is only $25 for our guest ($50 to public) Catch a Wapoti on Arenal lake. We have a couple of semi-wild parrots that will entertain you for hours. A free locally known hot spring fed river is about 30 min drive from the ranch.

Of course, if one would like to help out with some of the daily chores that is always a plus. The kids and adults as well love collecting fresh farm eggs for breakfast and feeding the ducks, shampooing the pony and /or chasing the sheep around the barn.

Parrot Hill is much more than a nice house with views, it is a lifelong memory waiting for you to make it so.

Hope to see you soon.

Thanks Charlie & family

Atmosphere is alive with the power of nature. There is a healing affect and many are the dreams born here. First house I ever designed and built. It's pretty fine- but what makes it so special is where it is and the inspired land it sits on. Come see for yourself. We welcome your visit.

  • Janet and I have been hosting travelers from all over the world for a couple of years. We enjoy it and so will you. We can offer good advice and help with tour reservations and in -house farm choice meals. Our strongest amenities are the sights and sounds of nature being at our doorstep. The experience of living on a ranch ,away from it all, for a few days is something really special. You can get involved ,or volunteer, if you like to help out. Collect eggs, learn to milk a cow, saddle a horse, or chase the sheep around, etc, etc. Usually some work needs to be done on a trail and the more help the merrier! Hands on if it suits you or sit back and relax on the scene, your choice. PURA VIDA (pure life) is a reality on the ranch. Everyone tells us that the views are the best from here but you need to see them for yourself. You're invited and hope to see you soon.
