About the property

Your Chance To Experience Ranch Living And Local Culture . New World to explore

' loving life on the hill with the parrots'

Simply said a world class location and high quality accommodations awaits. The views are of 4 volcanoes(only site where this is possible on super clear days), the full stretch of the lake (24miles), and the surrounding wilderness of primary and secondary forest. It is awesome and inspiring.

Parrot Hill Guest Ranch is a small, 50 acre, working ranch at the end of the public road at the top of the mountain. The rolling hills back into the Monteverde Childrens Eternal Rain Forest to the South and is bounded on the East by Volcano Arenal National Park. The Rio Aguas Gatas (Cat Water river) separates us from the village of El Castillo to the west. Therefore it remains peaceful, quiet, safe, and fun. You will have private access to roam free with private trails to rivers and waterfalls. Literally 5,000 sg miles of Jungle out our back door. Expansive 360 views includes sunrise over jungle and Cerro Chato (extinct volcano) to sunset on the water . We are located in the heart of Volcano Arenal and Lake Arenal North Zone which means, close to all the exciting adventures such as zip line, hanging bridges, hot springs, white water, fishing, kayaking, river drifting, canyoning and miles of secluded forest trails literally out our back door.

Absolutely the best place for families traveling with children. My three kids(12-16) are friendly and helpful. They love to play and show your kids around the ranch. Most young ones love the farm animals and like to help feed and collect eggs or try your hand at milking .We can do guided Horseback trail riding tours (only $30 for our guest $50 public)) with free lessons for novice riders. Just wait until you meet our orphan wild parrot named 'Papuga'. He is hysterical and will make you smile and laugh for hours. A true life building cultural experience that they will never forget. Kids don't get bored here.

The Tarzan swing, climbing trees , playing with the ducks or horses can keep them busy. Happy exhausted children make for happy ,not so exhausted, parents . Best part is it's free entertainment for the little ones-

The house itself is quite nice being spacious and clean. Modern amenities, Wi-Fi, sat TV, fully equipped. Heavy use of exotic native hardwoods. We also build custom wood furniture(see the shop) so the home is well furnished with every thing you'll need. We have dedicated the villa to you,the valued guest, and we live close by in the original farm house built totally of wood over 40 years ago. This means you have privacy while at the same time we are close by if you need us.

About Eduardo Gomez diaz

My name is Euardo gomez and I am 20yrs old. My mom ,Janet, is from Nicaragua and has an unbelievable life story of survival growing up during the Sandinista civil war in that country. My father charlie path is coming from a long career in the real estate biz ,in the US, to having the experience of ranching in Costa Rica has been a wonderful journey . My mom can teach you so much about natural herbal and medicinal plants and my children-ages 12-16 are great little guides. We really enjoy hosting visitors and especially families traveling with kids.

Eduardo Gomez diaz purchased this chateau / country house in 1999

Why Eduardo Gomez diaz chose Alajuela Province

Too beautiful to ignore. I couldn't stop dreaming of it and the challenge to learn another way to live, another language and culture. I was like a pioneer on this mountainside and managed to develop the road, power, and water resources to establish the ranch. Now we enjoy sharing it with other travelers.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Atmosphere is alive with the power of nature. There is a healing affect and many are the dreams born here. First house I ever designed and built. It's pretty fine- but what makes it so special is where it is and the inspired land it sits on. Come see for yourself. We welcome your visit.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a great three days here! It was so lovely to have a great view of the Arenal Volcano and lake. We went kayaking, horseback riding, hiking and fun with the farm animals and the nature here.

Also, Charlie and the family were so friendly and helped us a lot. Thank you for this nice vacation.

Notes:
Janet and I have been hosting travelers from all over the world for a couple of years. We enjoy it and so will you. We can offer good advice and help with tour reservations and in -house farm choice meals. Our strongest amenities are the sights and sounds of nature being at our doorstep. The experience of living on a ranch ,away from it all, for a few days is something really special. You can get involved ,or volunteer, if you like to help out. Collect eggs, learn to milk a cow, saddle a horse, or chase the sheep around, etc, etc. Usually some work needs to be done on a trail and the more help the merrier! Hands on if it suits you or sit back and relax on the scene, your choice. PURA VIDA (pure life) is a reality on the ranch. Everyone tells us that the views are the best from here but you need to see them for yourself. You're invited and hope to see you soon.

Good location, views and value...but reality fell short!!!

  • 2 of 5

After reading the description and reviews, we were really excited to be staying at Parrot Hill. We were attracted to it being family-oriented, with opportunities for kids to help with farm chores, and enjoy homecooked food. Unfortunately, it didn't completely live up to it in reality.

The property is in a great location with beautiful views, and the owners Eduardo (Charlie's son) and Janet (Charlie's wife) are very friendly. If you are looking for wildlife, you will find it here... In addition to the farm and wildlife, the family also have dogs and cats that frequently wonder into the property (even through your bedroom window at night).

You are very close to some fun activities - sky adventure zip, rainforest chocolate tour, eco Terra hanging bridges tour, ecotermales, proyecto Asis. Everyone (especially our teens) had a good time.

Nearby, there are are some good places to eat - Cafe Mediterranean, Mia Terra, Mr Coffee (la fortuna), Pizza John, Howler Bar (nearby). Everything was tasty and reasonably priced.

Sadly our stay in the property was not perfect. With the exception of the main upstairs accommodation (which was nice), the other accommodation was less than ideal, with strong odors, a non-working bathroom, and cold water for showers. Also a lot of the advertised amenities (fans, dishwashers, microwave, washer/dryer, stove, fully-equipped kitchen) were broken/unavailable during our stay. We also had inconsistent service for things like homecooked meals, laundry changes, and garbage/recycle removal.

BUT...despite this, it's still a wonderful property and a lot of the issues could be put down to owner transition and the size of our group (thirteen). If you are planning to stay at Parrot Hill, here are some suggestions that may help:

- Bring some shopping essentials with you like breakfast cereal, trash bags, coffee, milk etc. The nearest supermarket is 30 minutes away, so it's good to pick things up on the way in.

- A 4x4 drive is essential. You will not get there without one.

- Bring your allergy medication if you are remotely allergic to anything. Pets will visit you during the night.

- Plan to eat out, or cook in

- use Waze for navigation

- use WhatsApp for communication. Most locals use it, and it will save your cellular plan.

As a side note, the property descriptions on the website should be updated to reflect some or the owner changes that have occurred and the amenities available.

1 Star accommodations 5 Star disappointment

  • 1 of 5

We left after one night of a three night stay. If there would have been more pictures posted we would not have rented.

Trust me, we have rented on VRBO and other sites for years and have rented close to 20 properties, we really are easy going people, but the collective looks on our groups faces when they saw this place, we had to leave or risk ruining our families dream vacation.

No arguing they have a million dollar view, but one star accommodations. We went into town after being there only one night (12 hours) and rented a hotel room. Some of the low lights:

Furnishings were old, lights not working in the jungle, no TV or internet as advertised. Th beds we awful, the pillows, felt like rolled up towels stuffed int an old pillow case....

You need a 4 wheel drive to get there and we did not have one and we arrived at night in the rain.

They offer dinner on their website, so we had arranged through email for it to be prepared the first night as we drove 10 hours and we had 9 kids in our large group. We barely arrived up the mountain without 4 wheel drive, in the dark, in the rain and no dinner. So we asked for breakfast. They delivered and it was good, but it was also twice the price as advertised on their webpage, even after they dropped the ball the night before, so we left. They charged per person in our party although we had an infant that could not eat the meal.

Bugs we expected, but not to this extent on the mountain. Make no mistake, it is modified camping. Kids woke up to ants and bugs inside of their suitcases...Could not get a breeze in the hot rooms as the screens had large holes in them and the bugs came flying in...

Eduardo was nice, accommodations need a ton of work to meet thei guests expectations for a rental on VRBO.

Authentic Costa Rica experience, warm family

  • 5 of 5

Our trip would not have been complete without a stay with this family on their ranch. I brought 13 college students to Costa Rica. They all say that our stay here made the trip memorable. We were all hugging the family when we left. Eduardo speaks great English. His mom, brother, aunts and uncles all live on various homes on the property. They all took such great care of us. Genuine, generous people. The house has breathtaking views. They build the place from scratch. Eduardo's father Charles had the vision for the ranch and started it before he passed away. You feel great supporting this family business. Horseback riding, hikes to waterfalls, riding dirt bikes, visiting with the animals on the ranch, making breakfast, trips into town... this place has it all. The students participated in a variety of activities on the property. Eduardo gives you a document with pricing on it for transport from the airport, optional meals, ziplining, kayaking, etc. I went with a tour company because I was nervous that I would get there and they would not be able to arrange everything. I should have just gone through the ranch. My only thing you should know is that this place has bed space for 14 adults. You can fit more if you are bringing young children. The little town is adorable. You cannot walk but Eduardo is able to arrange affordable transportation. This town is quaint compared to La Fortuna. A/C is great. Wifi is not the best but really you should not be spending moments on wifi in this beautiful place. Kitchen has everything you need.

Unique Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for something a little different and we found it here. We stayed in the lower part of the house but i would recommend staying in the upper part if you can. We meet our "neighbors' and ran into them in different areas of Costa Rica after leaving here. The beds were comfortable. We took the horse ride to the waterfall. Get ready for a challenging hike! There were some hammocks and a rope swing that the girls enjoyed. Their puppy was a frequent visitor along with the cats. We enjoyed them too. We had a nice dinner with Eduardo, his mom and brother. I would recommend that if you are able to. We visited the Butterfly Conservatory and had a great burrito in El Castillo. We were not able to get to Pizza Johns this visit but it is a great place to go if you are in this area.

Amazing people, house and area

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Parrot Hill despite some very unfortunate weather while we were there. Eduardo was very helpful in finding us things to keep us busy and entertained! He was especially helpful when we lost power for a short while due to the weather. He came to check on us several times and provided us with everything we needed to be more than comfortable.

The house had everything we needed and more. It's a spectacular location (definitely need a 4x4) with an amazing view. We went with four adults and two kids and had more than plenty space.

While we were there we took in the eco-zoo of reptiles - very informative and a lot of fun. We also went to Don Olivo's chocolate farm tour (about an hours drive and worth every minute). As well we took time to enjoy the amazing scenery in the Arena area.

We would stay here again in a heartbeat! Thankyou for everything Eduardo. It was truly wonderful to meet and spend time with you and your family.

Stunning, Out-of-the-Way, Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 12 (2 parents, 5 adult children and their 5 spouses/partners) spent several days over the Christmas/New Year week at Parrot Hill. We rented the whole place and had a fun time choosing which uniquely designed and decorated space each couple would stay while there.

Coming straight from 9 days of sunny, glorious beach weather on Nicoya Peninsula, the rain forest type foliage and climate were a lovely change. We experienced some torrential downpour and a power outage (the first in 3 months apparently) just to make things a little more exciting.

With Charles' passing away in October, Eduardo, the oldest son, is now the host in charge of renters. We so missed getting to know Charles personally as he had been exceedingly friendly, kind and knowledgeable in our email conversations over the past 8 months but clearly he and Janet, his lovely wife, did an amazing job of raising their children. Eduardo did a wonderful job taking care of us on every front (from getting flashlights to us asap when the power went out, to, along with Janet, cooking several amazingly flavourful breakfasts and dinners, to arranging a zipline/hot pool day for us at Los Lagos). We loved the adventurousness of the location (yes, the road is as recounted in every review!), the wonderful hike down to one of the waterfalls on the property (Rio Tico) and the restfulness (lots of card/game playing in the evenings).

The information package that Charles had sent us upon rental confirmation is the best set of information we've ever received from a vacation rental owner. There was clear directions and explanations of the property guidelines; good descriptions of the meals that could be ordered; some great family history; and wonderful options described on how to take advantage of the beautiful and adventurous activities in the area.

The views are stunning, the property fun and well-maintained and the activities in the area suitable for virtually every type of family or couple.

Stay at this property. You won't be disappointed!

Parrot Hill is a small working ranch situated just outside the quaint village of El Castillo. Surrounded by 3 national parks/reserves this spot is ideal for nature lovers. High altitude (2700+ft) means it is fresh and cool and always green. Close by are various activities to keep you smiling. Sky Trek zip lines and hanging bridges, the largest live Butterfly and snake exhibits, hot springs, fishing -and more. In the pueblo are several fine dining establishments, including Howlers bar and grill.

We offer horseback riding which has been popular along with guided hiking tours to the volcano , rivers and Waterfalls and the forest. Cost is only $25 for our guest ($50 to public) Catch a Wapoti on Arenal lake. We have a couple of semi-wild parrots that will entertain you for hours. A free locally known hot spring fed river is about 30 min drive from the ranch.

Of course, if one would like to help out with some of the daily chores that is always a plus. The kids and adults as well love collecting fresh farm eggs for breakfast and feeding the ducks, shampooing the pony and /or chasing the sheep around the barn.

Parrot Hill is much more than a nice house with views, it is a lifelong memory waiting for you to make it so.

Hope to see you soon.

Thanks Charlie & family
