Featured in the coffee table book, The Hawaiian House Now, the home is a historic 1895 structure, modified in the 1940s and retaining the charm of old Hawaii with architecture and furnishings of the day, while satisfying the needs and aesthetic of today's lifestyle.

Panoramic views of the ocean, Kona coast, tree canopy, landscaped yard, and surrounding pastures will amaze. The cool 1,200' elevation of Holualoa, the open lanais, spacious bedrooms, and a well-appointed kitchen are sure to please. The rural feeling of Hale Akala and the large established yard with old plantings of avocado, ulu (breadfruit,) fig, starfruit (carambola,) dragon fruit, pineapple, banana and lime trees is guaranteed to take you away from life's stresses and please the senses.

Four bedrooms to choose from, of which three have their own private bathroom within. The fourth bedroom, with a queen-sized bed, is on the lower level of the home and adjacent to the TV/sitting room. Three sets of French doors extends to a terraced area in the yard, providing the room beautiful light. The middle (and main-floor) level consists of kitchen, dining, living room, two lanais, and two bedrooms with queen-sized beds. Upper-level master suite has a king-sized bed, two window seats and a single day bed. The window seats can sleep children under the age of nine. The day-bed area is separate from the master bedroom, with a work/desk area adjacent. In total, one king, three queens, and one single will accommodate nine people in beds. The window seats allow for two more. A wonderful fireplace on the main floor living area will warm you on chilly winter nights. Lower floor accesses the yard and outdoor cooking terrace via stairs from the kitchen as well as from the ocean-side lanai.

A charming 1940-era guest cottage with an appealing screened-in lanai, small kitchen and full bath, privately situated across the driveway, sleeps two in a queen bed, and allows parties of ten to twelve adults to use the entire property. A leisurely stroll on a walking path through a sixty year old coffee orchard leads guests from the front door of the home to our coffee establishment, the Kona Blue Sky Coffee visitor center where guests can have a coffee tour, sample our estate grown coffee and take home a reminder of their pleasant Hawaii visit with freshly roasted 100% Kona arabica.

A fenced vegetable/herb garden is steps from the kitchen, and a large lawn just beyond for bocce, throwing a football or a frisbee, will delight the outdoor appreciator. Comfortable seating area on lawn sports a gas as well as a BBQ grill, and a teak dining set, certain to entertain the outdoor dining enthusiast.

Three friendly dogs and a social cat, that live on the property with Lisa, will greet you and say hello on occasion.

From the moment we walked through the door, I felt all the tension just slide from my shoulders. We were surrounded by beauty, both inside and out. Our host, Lisa, thought of everything we could possibly have wanted: the freshest fruit, right from the garden/trees, books about the island, even Hawaiian music CDs...and the best coffee EVER. She is a wonderful resource about the property and the history of the island.



The house has lots of art and is tastefully appointed, but still feels like a place where you can relax. The animals are part of the welcome committee.

If I ever make it back to Kona I would make this property my first choice, lots of room, well maintained, and high on the mountain which was cooler than down below in Kona near the water. Lisa very helpful. Liked their dogs.

Outstanding vacation spot!

We stayed in four different properties during our stay in the Hawaiian Islands and this was, by far, our favorite house, where we stayed for 4 nights. It's a beautifully designed and maintained home with historic character, with incredible views and a beautiful location on the large property. We enjoyed so many aspects of our experience: the lovingly and skillfully chosen art and furnishings, the connection with the outdoors (the house is very open to the outside), the well-equipped kitchen and laundry room, great book collection, a game of bocce on the lawn, the friendly dogs (and cat) who visited us, and the amazing coffee... thank you so much! We'd love to come back someday.

Magical - not to be missed.

Our group of 7 (3 couples, 1 single) stayed at the cottage and main house April, 2016. The cottage was really comfortable for two of us and the house exceeded our already high expectations. The sense of space and authenticity is hard to capture in photos. Having been to the island 3 times now, Holualoa has fast become a favorite jumping off point. Access to Captain Cook, Kona, and the northern beaches is easy by car - and staying at a beach is not necessary for us given the laws requiring public access, even to the beaches accessed through the private resorts.

From this house, we hit up Hawi, Polulu Valley, Waimea, Mauna Kea beach, Mauna Kea summit (Harper jeep rental), Holuakoa Cafe (not to be missed), Kona, Waimea, Waipio Rim, Mahai'ula Beach, and Manini'owali Beach. When on the Big Island we like to split our time between the Kona side and Volcano and this was a great jumping off point for the former.

Wonderful home!

We had plenty of room for 7 adults and 2 children. It fit our needs nicely. It is an older home with a lot of antiques, clean, beautiful property. Nice yard for the kids to run and play in. Thank you!

Lovely House and Gorgeous Sunset View

We had a family trip with 7 adults and 3 little kids there. The house itself deserved 5 stars. Well maintained and tastefully decorated. The sunset view was just gorgeous. The neighborhood was quiet and natural - it was located in the famous Kona Coffee farming area. We fell asleep with the sounds of night crickets, roosters, frogs, you name it. What a great treat for city dwellers! Lisa was a wonderful owner. She greeted us and helped us settling in. She even provided a pound, yes, a pound, of her estate Kona coffee! We loved it. Will definitely stay here again if there's another chance to visit Big Island. Recommended for large groups with children. Grocery stores/restaurants/shops were about 10 min away.

We had a magical family vacation at the house.

We had a wonderful family vacation at the fine old fashioned Hawaiian house. The house itself was comfortable and tastefully updated with all the amenities needed for a family. Lisa was a wonderful hostess and made sure we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend this house to anyone but especially to a family with several children or for 3-4 couples to share. We had our best holiday ever at this great Hawaiian home.

Location

From the Owner

Hale Akala is a special piece of Kona. Built in 1895 by Manuel Silveira Goularte, a Portuguese immigrant who raised his thirteen children here. It was utilized by cowboys of the neighboring Greenwell family's Palani Ranch, to re-supply and breakfast in the 1920 and 30s. It was abandoned and left to the elements before WWII, eventually being purchased by Christian's grandparents, William and Margaret of Honolulu, in 1945. Wanting to retire to Kona (where Margaret's great grandparents, Reverend Asa and Lucy Thurston, part of the company of first Christian missionaries to the Islands, who arrived in Kailua-Kona, the seat of Hawaii's ruling Kamehameha reign in 1820, lived until the 1860s), they chose the cool uplands of Holualoa. Hale Akala has been in the family for four generations. Cattle roam the surrounding ten acres of pasture and you'll hear an occasional bull bellowing from nearby Palani Ranch, in the quiet evening hours.

The town of Holualoa, once a ranching community, is known today as an artist's hub with several well-known artist residents and established galleries to explore. Holualoa is in the prime of the 30-mile wide Kona coffee belt, where coffee has been a staple crop here for nearly two hundred years. Several coffee tours are offered in the area. The Kona Historical Society, a twenty minute drive south, offers an excellent cultural living history experience in early coffee lifestyle with thier interactive Uchida Farm destination tour. Kailua-Kona Town is just fifteen minutes away with restaurants, beautiful monarchy-era Hulihe`e Palace museum situated on the water's edge, grocery stores, banks, ocean related activities, the Kona pier (the start and finish of the world famous Ironman World Championship competition in October, as well as the sight of the International Billfish Tournament in August.)
