1 Bedroom sleeps 2, 1 Bathroom

If you want to detach from your everyday life and/or the crowds in Yosemite, a respite, a retreat to recharge at RoundHat Ranch is a natural remedy for you.

A RoundHat Ranch stay is a great addition to your Yosemite vacation experience. Located in the pastoral Catheys Valley, an area of large and small ranches, 2.7 miles off State Hwy 140 (the only all-weather route to Yosemite, and parallels the route of discovery of the Yosemite Valley along the Merced River Gorge by Indians, explorers, and miners).

The 'Cottage' is nestled within the ranch, having its own private fenced area. You can move about the ranch along the many tree-lined trails, seeing the animals, and taking in the sights, sounds, and feel of the ranch.

The Cottage has been designed, both inside and out, for an intimate and serene experience for its guests

The Ranch has a full-time owner/manager living at the Ranch Headquarters and can answer any questions you might have during your stay.

RoundHat Ranch has a no pets, no children, 1-2 ADULTS ONLY (21 and over) rental policy due to liability issues concerning the horses and other animals on the Ranch. The policy does allow us to not charge a Security Deposit.

From RoundHat Ranch, it is 3.3 miles to restaurant, gas, and convenience store at the Catheys Valley crossroads at Highway 140 and Hornitos Rd., then it is 10 scenic miles to the historic mining town of Mariposa, another 12 scenic miles later, you enter the spectacular Merced River Gorge (this is the beginning of your Yosemite experience) traveling along the river (Hwy 140) straight into Yosemite Valley. The Arch, West Yosemite Park Entrance (beginning of the Valley), is 45 miles from the ranch, but be advised the scenic beauty may cause you to stop, observe, or linger along the way, so, time to Yosemite Valley varies.

RoundHat Ranch Cottage is 1 bedroom with queen-size bed, 1 bath with shower, and additional outside shower.

There is outside the cottage, within the private fenced area, shade-cloth covered arbor patios, a roof covered all weather patio with double chair swing, cement table with inlaid chess/checker board, fountain, outdoor shower with stall and dressing area, propane BBQ, Chaise lounges, patio furniture all shaded by large mature Oak trees.

Inside the Cottage the 1 bedroom is appointed with things related to the ranch and Yosemite, and a Queen size bed w/ linens, blankets, comforter, futon chair/bed and ceiling fans.

The Cottage has Satellite TV, WiFi internet access, full bath w/shower with large multi-setting shower head, soap, towels.

The kitchen has microwave, refrigerator, 2 burner electric stove top, large kitchen sink, peninsula island cabinet, coffeemaker, some seasonings, cookware, utensils, plates, bowls, cups, and dining table.

Living room has sofa, love seat, captains chair w/footstool in Mission-style furniture, and ceiling fan.

The heating and air conditioning is a Fujitsu split system that both heats or cools to the set temperature and is very quiet.

There is some reading material and games.

The utility room has a washer and dryer, extra bathroom and kitchen supplies, and an ironing board, iron, and hair dryer.

Fantastic stay near Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

The Roundhat Horse Ranch was a fantastic choice during our vacation to Yosemite for me and my significant other. We stayed at the cottage and drove to Yosemite each of the days that we stayed. While the drive was a little long (45 mins to an hour in light traffic), we did not mind it as the drive was scenic and we benefited from the secluded location of the cottage.

In terms of amenities, the cottage had everything we needed. We made breakfast, lunch, and dinner almost every day. Enjoyed the porch with warm coffee and tea in the mornings and evenings, and took in the landscape in complete privacy. In terms of the quality of the lodging, I honestly preferred the cottage to the top floor suite we stayed in at the Le Meridien in downtown San Francisco. The bed was very comfortable, the views incredible, and the property was very clean.

If you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy nature, then I recommend staying here. The drive is most certainly worth it.

Amazing and calm cottage surrounded by horses and donkeys

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there during our trip to yosemite and we enjoyed it sooo much! The cottage is very clean and very well equipped. In the kitchen you find everything you need. The property is wide and there are a lot of horses and two donkeys, so we did a nice walk every morning and evening. Gayle and Steven are very kind and helpful. We enjoyed to meet them. Not only because of the tips only locals can give you. Thanks a lot!

Heavenly...

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle, and RHR helps you do this in the most charming way; taking you back to a time when life was simpler.

1- The amenities are AMAZING: spacious, squeaky clean, laundry facilities with all the fixin's, coffee, tea, fridge, stovetop, microwave, and yes - WiFi too. You will LOVE the outdoor patio with twinkling lights and fountain. Stephen built the cottage and home with his own two hands.

2- Wake to the sound of roosters, and a sprawling ranch with 27 horses, tons of jack rabbits running around, wild turkeys, GIANT yellow Viceroy butterflies, and 2 sweet donkeys named Libby and Jewel. <3 <3 Yosemite is just an hour's drive away. I recommend stopping in Mariposa to see the little museum and maybe take in a free outdoor summer concert.

3- Last, but not least, Stephen and Gayle are real sweethearts - just genuine good people who love people. They took me around the grounds by golf cart to meet the other horses and to see their lovely home.

RHR didn't just meet our expectations, it exceeded them - majorly!

Amazing Ranch experience!

  • 5 of 5

The ranch setting was exactly what we were looking for! We had beautiful horses and two sweet donkeys just outside of our own private setting. The property has its own road system between the horse corrals and we enjoyed walking the grounds many times. The cottage is very spacious and we loved the western decor. The kitchen was well stocked, the bed very comfortable, high quality furnishings throughout. The shaded outside area off the bedroom is spacious and the bunnies would come for a drink each evening from the fountain. The owners, Steve and Gayle were so gracious, friendly and helpful. Wonderful people whom I hope we get a chance to see again. The location was perfect as it is close to Mariposa where we found some great restaurants and cute shops on the way to and back from Yosemite. Thanks again Steve and Gayle.

Exceptionally Beautiful & Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My Boyfriend & I stayed at Stephen & Gayle's Cottage for a brief evening while visiting Yosemite and it is nothing but Amazing! We did not have a chance to meet Gayle however Stephen was very welcoming, inviting & informative on where we should go / places to see at Yosemite for the short time we were there. We will go back sometime soon and definitely will be make sure Their cottage is available. It's very peaceful, the cottage is cozy & private, the horses were beautiful and the land as well. You will not even think you are in California as we had to travel to San Francisco and would have rather stayed at the cottage. Thank you again for your hospitality.

We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Our 3 nights at Roundhat Ranch were beautiful!

The cottage is set up in a terrific way. It's clean and comfortable and has everything you need, and Stephen was there to help when we needed him..

We loved being alone in nature with all the comfort we like.

It was a bit far for Yosemite, more than an hour each way, but the comfort and beauty at the ranch were well worth it!

We reccomend!

Location

From the Owner

Catheys Valley has an almost pastoral quality with many large and small ranches. RoundHat Ranch is nestled at the foot of Guadalupe Mt. on gently sloping all-usable terrain, with several knolls giving 360 degree views. And the proximity to Yosemite Park made our decision to live here easy.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Mariposa 11mi./Merced 29mi./Fresno-Yosemite Int'l at 75 Miles Nearest Barpub : Mariposa, Ca. at 15 Miles Nearest Golf : Sierra Meadows Golf at 42 Miles Nearest Train : AMTRAK - Merced Ca. at 27 Miles Nearest Motorway : California State Highway 140 at 2.7 Miles Nearest Restaurant : The Oaks, Catheys Valley 3.3mi./ Town of Mariposa at 15 Miles Nearest Ski : China Peak/Badger Pass at 68 Miles Nearest Beach : Lake McClure/ Merced River at 28 Miles Car: necessary

Catheys Valley is in Mariposa County along State Highway 140 to Yosemite. It is an area of Oak Woodlands, Knolls, Hills, and Meadows, with the Sierra Mountains and Yosemite bordering to the east. Many old Chinese rock walls define old boundaries and are now historical preservation sites.

Catheys Valley has a rural ranching lifestyle of small and large ranches, the kind you see while traveling, and wonder how you can experience it for yourself.

RoundHat Ranch puts you into that experience, where you can get the sights, sounds, and feel of ranch living.

Nature is the attraction and the main activity with quiet, space, and privacy as amenities.

The sights can give inspiration to the photographer and nature lover, like it did to Ansel Adams and John Muir.

Less than one mile from RoundHat Ranch is 'The StoneHouse', where naturalist John Muir and President Theodore Roosevelt stayed while making Yosemite a National Park. During that time, a certain Hiram Walker was granted an original land patent for 40 acres, signed by then President, Theodore Roosevelt, and today, is RoundHat Ranch.

The seasons at RoundHat ranch are distinct, and each bring their own special experiences and views.

There are many boating and fishing lakes, streams, and rivers in the Yosemite foothills and mountains.

River rafting in the Merced River Gorge, a designated wild and scenic river, along Highway 140 into Yosemite, is popular late Spring to early Fall.

Of course, all things Yosemite are on the menu, and the Ranch affords a great respite after a day in the Park, away from the crowd.

Amenities

From the Owner

To move about the entire property easily, the many pastures have tree-lined trails between. This allows guests to observe all the area and animals up close and in an almost parklike experience. For those who like photography, there is ample inspiration. Varied wildlife can be seen daily. The 'Cottage' is set within and yet apart from the ranch by its own privately fenced area, encompassing large mature Oak trees, shade-cloth arbor covered patios, fountain, all-weather covered patio, double chair swing, and outdoor shower. All with an intimate view of the ranch and distant mountain, valley and meadow views. The seasons at RoundHat Ranch are distinct and each has its own attractive elements, there are no weather related access problems to the ranch or to Yosemite Valley along Highway 140. From RoundHat Ranch, it is 3.3 miles to restaurant, gas, and convenience store at the Catheys Valley crossroads, then it is 10 scenic miles to the historic mining town of Mariposa, another 12 scenic miles later, you enter the spectacular Merced River Gorge (this is the beginning of your Yosemite experience) traveling along the river (Hwy 140) straight into Yosemite Valley. The Arch, West Yosemite Park Entrance (beginning of the Valley), is 45 miles from the ranch, but be advised the scenic beauty may cause you to stop, observe, or linger along the way, so, time to Yosemite Valley varies.
