Overview

About the property

Private 2BR Studio Cottage; Tranquil and Lush - Centrally Located!

Summary

Our cute ~900 sq-ft two bedroom studio cottage is on a multi-acre parcel directly adjacent to the Road to Hana, Twin Falls and miles of undeveloped jungle.

Down to earth and set in the authentic Hawaii you knew existed, but had no idea how to find. If you’re looking for an affordable, non-touristy private home, you just found it. Exceptionally private and clean, the high quality furnishings, linens and kitchen appliances are kept in like-new condition.

The cottage has loads of windows overlooking tropical plants, a heavily producing Haas Avocado tree is next to the kitchen window, coconut, breadfruit, hibiscus and heliconia are also plentiful.

Bedrooms & Bedding

You may be asking yourself, “is it a two-bedroom or a studio?” Originally built as an open studio cottage with a large enclosed lanai, the lanai has just recently been remodeled into a second bedroom.

This is an open floorplan with the master bedroom connected to the main living area. The second bedroom can be closed off from the rest of the house affording privacy to couples traveling together, or especially useful to families who would like to put the kids to sleep early without ending the night for themselves.

Both bedrooms have high-quality queen beds. The Master bed is a Sealy Posturepedic pillowtop. The lanai bedroom has a Simmons Beautyrest pillowtop.

(For spare kids you may have hanging around, there is also a mini-twin futon, a pack-and-play – and oh, and the two sofas are kid sized!)

Kitchen

The full kitchen has everything you need to prepare a meal, snacks or drinks. High quality Hawaiian-style ceramic dishes, assorted glassware, pots & pans, silverware, etc is all high quality and new. A new blender, microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker are among the small appliances. Everything is solid quality and full-sized, not like what you expect in typical vacation condos and hotels.

There is also a reverse osmosis water filter installed at the sink to filter the rainwater supplied tap for clean drinking water.

Amentiies

We have WiFi, a radio, and of course towels, linens, pots, pans, dishes, BBQ and a washer and dryer. We also have a TV, but TV junkies beware: there are no over the air signals or cable tv out here! (Ok, fine, there is a DVD player and the TV is hooked up to Netflix, Prime & Hulu - bring your iPhones, iPads, Droids, laptops and all that and you'll get your fix!)

Bathroom

The bathroom is a powder room, so no indoor shower- but you won't care because the outdoor bamboo shower is really awesome - in fact, we have one at our house and it is the only shower we ever use :) There is also a newly added "hillbilly hot tub" outside - this is a large stock tank (Farm-style 4? round ~200 gal. metal soaking tub - it's a lot of fun!)

All of our tap water comes from rainwater catchment which is sometimes supplemented by stream water. Aesthetically the water is not always crystal clear so those of you unaccustomed to off-grid living may find the tint of the water where it is deeper than a few inches (like in the hillbilly hot tub) uninviting..sorry about that! But it is regularly treated, so bathing, washing dishes, toothbrushing, etc. are all fine – and we do have an RO filtered water spigot that is the cleanest water you'll ever drink :)

Location

We're about a half hour from the airport and 15-20 from Paia Town, Haiku, Makawao and a dozen great uncrowded North Shore beaches. It's really, peaceful and private; perfect for our friends who like nature and adventure!

We're about five minutes down a narrow, windy, bumpily paved jungle road (any car can navigate it) off the famous "Road to Hana" by Twin Falls. (No, we're NOT in Hana!) The area is largely undeveloped, but some friends have imagined us to be in an isolated grass hut in the backcountry jungle- hahaha! We have neighbors, and Internet, and are pretty close to everything Maui has to offer.

Our land is not heavily landscaped and this is the jungle – so stuff grows like…well…a jungle! (If things like the lawn getting tall between cuttings is something that horrifies you, prepare to be horrified if you stay with us!) The cottage has loads of windows overlooking tropical plants, a heavily producing yummy Avocado tree is next to the kitchen window, coconut, breadfruit, hibiscus and heliconia are also plentiful.

So, if that all sounds awesome to you, then you're gonna love it here!

Why Alexa Fischer chose Maui

The location is perfect for our active family of six. We can walk out our door and be swimming in waterfall pools or hiking jungle in minutes. We can drive to a dozen beautiful uncrowded beaches in 15-20 minutes. All the rest of this spectacularly perfect island is an easy reach.

What makes this cottage unique

Being an author and with four active kids - we're all over Maui, all the time. Having this location as our home base has been perfect for our busy family because it allows us to experience living in the serenity of the true, natural Hawaii while still being within easy reach of everything the island has to offer.

great out of the way place for peace and quiet!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at this sweet little cottage. It was super private and quiet, lush and green. Comfortable with everything you need. Only about a 10 minute drive from Haiku and 15 minutes to Paia which is great for restaurants, beach and shopping. As it's on the road to Hana it does mean going in that direction is full of hairpin turns and one lane bridges, beautiful, but the driver needs to watch the road and not the scenery!

Can't wait to come back!

  • 5 of 5

A great place to slow down, relax, and be at one with nature. The vegetation surrounding this cottage is so beautiful! It is dense and gives you a secluded private place to unwind. The outdoor shower and bath were amazing, and even better at night under the stars. The inside is very comfortable with a nice flow. Very clean and well cared for. The kitchen had everything we needed for eating in. The geckos and insects were a fun part of jungle living. We left the windows open 24/7 the breeze, rain, birds, insects and other jungles sounds are relaxing and helped us get a good nights sleep. The owner/manager were kind and helpful.

Great, Affordable East Maui "jungle" property

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a non-resort Maui stay and we certainly got that with this property. We had a great three night stay mid-July 2014. We found the property to be essentially as described although the property is starting to show its age, primarily on the exterior (being surrounded by nature in a rain forest will do that to a house). The warning given about the outdoor shower is accurate. There isn't anything like an outdoor shower in the jungle rain forest and the hillbilly hot tub was fun to use after a long day playing tourist. We'd stay again just for the outdoor shower facilities! The property is very private and the location is great - Paia Town is close by in case you want civilization or a dinner out and Mana foods is the place to stop for supplies - what a great store. If you are planning a drive to Hana it is nice to be located at the start of the drive so you can head out early to beat the crowds (stop at Pranee's Thai "restaurant" for lunch in Hana! = Fantastic). But do remember to bring along bug spray - being essentially in the jungle does = bug bites. I will recommend this property to others.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your kind feedback :) We have been noticing the outside needs some sprucing up as well. We just put an entirely new railing and supports on the steps and power washed the entire exterior of the home and it looks great! We're always keeping the small maintenance items up too - so thank you for sharing your feedback :) Aloha, and we hope to have you again soon!

A fabulous cottage in the jungle!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 9 nights and really enjoyed the jungle experience. The cottage was very clean, comfortable and the outdoor shower was a bonus. It was an adventure to get to the first night! The lovely town of Paia is a 10 minute drive away and the best beach we went to on Maui was only 15 minutes away. Definately great for families with young children who would love the gecko's, large yard and creatures. The jungle experience is not for everyone though as it was really humid when we were there and the mosquito's were fierce.

Location

Waipio Bay is a couple miles into the unofficial start of the famous Road to Hana, at the edge of the rainforest. Since Maui is small, and the resort areas are not centrally located, this private and “remote” area is ironically quite central for active people looking to experience the huge variety Maui has to offer.

This location is also a great choice for those who want privacy, serenity and a peaceful place to recharge since it is off the beaten tourist path, and at the end of a private road.

Twin Falls is practically our neighbour.

The Bamboo Forest is just 4 miles away.

We're close to Pa'ia, and Makawao.

The Road to Hana begins here.

Closer + avoid traffic bottlenecks to Kula, Ulapalakua and Haleakala Park vs. staying in resort areas.

About the same drive-time to Iao Valley and Kahului as the resorts are.

About twenty minutes more to drive to either resort area vs. staying in one and driving to explore the other (and you should explore it all!)

Drives on this side of Maui are incredibly beautiful, enjoyable and scenic, making day-tripping all over the island an absolute pleasure and a must-do!

To find out if the North Shore is for you, Google 'should I stay on the north shore maui' to see a great article that the system won't let us put a direct link to in here :)
