This house is located on an acre and a half of beachfront property. The house is elevated approximately 8 feet above the ground. Three small rooms/shops/storage areas are located beneath the house to which the owner has access and uses occasionally. The owner has vehicles parked on the back (west) half acre where the guest also has parking space.
We landed in Belize in 1973 while vacationing. We fell in love with Placencia and the rest is history.
Lou Nicolait purchased this house in 1973
This location is the best in the village. Close to all the action, but as private as you want to make it.
Wrap around veranda, 200 feet of beach front, light and airy.
Where the sidewalk ends.....is this natural retreat. Right on the beach, short walk to the best grocery store, easy walk to the village via the sidewalk, 2 decent bikes to use. The house is simple, open, very clean!, and well-stocked with everything you need. Ms. Lou and Epi took very good care of us--so helpful and accommodating! Fresh coconut water was there for us when we arrived and Epi got us more, plus the coconut meat, whenever we requested it. We could walk the beach in both directions for a good distance, and we swam right in front of the house every day--nice sandy bottom and clear sea, most days. We miss it already. We will definitely be back!
We were fortunate to stay for a month at The Placencia Beach House (Nov10-Dec10). Having read other visitor's reviews we were pretty sure this would be the perfect stay for us and it truly was. The property is one of a kind. So close to the village and yet very private & relaxing. The acre of sand and palm trees leading to the ocean is the best front yard one could ever imagine. The beach house is rustic but airy & comfortable with all the amenities one needs to feel right at home. We would have absolutely no reservations about recommending this property. It exceeded our expectations and we were very sad to have to leave. Thanks to Lou and Epi who made our stay a very memorable one.
I can not say enough great things about our trip and stay in Belize. The Placencia Beach House is perfect. It is located on the beach. Close walking to everything you would ever need. Joslin and Epi are more than accommodating. We can not wait to return. If you are going to Placencia stay at the Placencia Beach House. Everyone is so friendly, we did not want to leave.
What can I say? I concur with all of the previous reviews completely (STAY HERE!) so I will try to add new information. My wife and I stayed there for 10 days in October 2016. Everything was great! It was a little rainy this season but even that tended to only last a short time. Lou was extremely helpful and Epi was also helpful (e.g., coconut water) and really interesting to talk to.
The house was perfectly comfortable and well equipped. We didn't watch much TV, except the final presidential debate on our last night :( but it was nice that it was available and had some interesting local content too. We had a 4x4 pickup truck (which we didn't really need but useful for our trip).
In addition to the restaurants mentioned in previous reviews, we recommend Mim's (maybe 100 yards from the house), Carolyn & Maria's, and Miss Brenda's at the marina, which is just a shack kind of place but Miss Brenda was fun to talk to and made me a great breakfast. We also went north and had pizza at the bowling alley, which was just funny and the pizza was ok.
Besides reading on the beach, swimming, and napping, our recommended activities include (need transportation for several of these):
- snorkeling at Silk Cayes (or anywhere else)
- Hiking at Catscomb jaguar reserve (bring bug spray and wear real shoes)
- Seeing the howler monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, and tons of birds on Monkey River
- Blue Hole national park (cave tubing and sink hole swim)
- Visiting Dangriga (heavily Garifuna-influenced town)
About Monkey River: Most people get there by guide and boat from the docks in Placencia and it was suggested to us that we not try to drive out there, especially given the recent rains but we did it anyway on a lark. Helped to have the truck but not really necessary. We got lucky and found a local (trained) guide whose family has been in the Monkey River community for 3-4 generations. Derwin Garbutt and he was excellent, casual, funny, and we learned a lot about the history of the Monkey River area from him. Left number at house or ask around. we HIGHLY recommend him. He will come pick you up in Placencia.
Driving in Belize is easy but slow. There are major speed bumps in every community but the major roads are in fine shape. We drove down from the Belize City airport and it was cool to see more of the country.
One last tip: if you are at the BC airport and are hungry, walk across the street to the vendors. We got beans and rice, chicken, and potato salad for USD$3
We loved staying here! Lou was so great, giving us info and tips for our time in Placencia. The yard/home maintenance man, Effie, was so kind and helpful, making us coconut water and helping us with the bikes. We took the bikes out every day just riding around the cute town, picking up ingredients for fresh Pico and shopping for souvenirs. The people in town were great and the restaurants were phenomenal! Try Omar's, the Shak, and Wendy's. We even were able to catch the Bronco's game at Tipsy Tuna.
Lou's house was clean and simple and it provided everything we needed. We spent most days in beach chairs swimming and reading, returning to the house in the afternoons to nap and read in the hammocks. She even has a tv with several channels if you just want to spend a night in. The house stays cool with the ocean breeze and lots of overhead fans. There's a washing machine downstairs if you need to catch up on laundry.
Our highlight was absolutely the day when Loggerhead Turtles hatched under her deck! We were able to watch them crawl to the ocean! There was over 100 of them! So cool!
We went during the off season so some restaurants were closed but we were still able to find plenty of places to eat. The grocery store is a short walk/bike ride from the house.
We are thinking of coming back here with our three kids next time!
Love the interior beach house look, the wonderful deck, gorgeous view from all points!
Effie the yard man was helpful, polite, and extremely delightful!
Thank you Ms. Lou
