Mountain Lodge on Quiet Lake: Swim, Paddle, and Fish from Private Beach

Property Details

Updated: Oct 16, 2016
Large 6-bedroom in White Mountains, 2 hrs to Boston, minutes to ski areas

This classic mountain lodge is nestled in the White Mountains on a lovely lake. Six private bedrooms on two floors make this ideal for large families. Without leaving the property you can swim, fish, boat, play volleyball and other lawn games, or have a bonfire. It's a short walk up the road to Hubbard Brook trails where you can hike along a rushing river with swimming holes and waterfalls. We are also close to four major ski areas; Loon mountain is less than 15 minutes away and Cannon Mountain, which has the largest vertical drop of any mountain in New Hampshire, is just 20 minutes door-to-door.

- Beach with dock

- Huge fieldstone fireplace

- Six private bedrooms on two floors, each with a queen or full-sized bed.

- Private hot tub

- Canoe, kayak, and paddleboat with life jackets and paddles

- A 1.25 acre lot with a flat lawn for games, volleyball, soccer and badminton (plenty of lawn games in the shed)

- Giant deck overlooking lake and mountains

- Gas grill

- Fire pit in the yard

- Large driveway with room for plenty of cars

- Free wifi and premium cable channels (HBO, etc.)

- Bed linen and towels

Mirror Lake Lodge is located in the heart of the White Mountains, surrounded by hiking, waterfalls, ski mountains, and family attractions.

Time to ski mountains (with year-round attractions):

15 minutes to Loon

20 minutes to Cannon

25 minutes to Waterville Valley

35 minutes to Bretton Woods.

Several lovely towns are nearby with great restaurants, shopping, and family attractions. However, the beauty of Mirror Lake Lodge is that guests can park their car and leave it. Being directly on a lake and having a huge yard means no packing up the car every time someone wants to go for a swim. Go from the house to the yard to the water without lugging a bag. Guests can wake up and be right where they want to be. There are miles of trails along Mirror Lake and nearby Hubbard Brook.

The lodge is on beautiful Mirror Lake, which is spring fed and 30-feet deep, ideal for swimming, paddling and fishing. It is stocked with trout. The shore is mostly lined by National Forest. Motor boats are prohibited.

Besides skiing and snowboard, there are many area attractions and activities. Guests can enjoy hikes in Franconia Notch and Welch Dickey. Even very young explorers can enjoy hiking to the Basin, the Flume, and Lost River. Rock climbers can easily get to nearby Rumney. Train buffs will enjoy the nearby Hobo Railroad, Lafayette Dining Car, and the steam engine at Clark's Trading Post - all in neighboring Lincoln, NH. Golfers can play at the Jack O'Lantern and Waterville Valley golf courses. We are also a short drive to Squam Lake Science Center and Waterville Valley. We have information on local businesses who provide unique experiences such as moose tours and standing paddle board lessons.

**Attention swimmers: Before we bought the lodge, we used to come to Mirror Lake just to swim because the temperature was perfect, the water is clear and and there are no motorboats. It's an ideal lake for swimming. Our four-year old loves to wade and play on the sandy beach in front of the house. Our beach gradually goes out to 10 feet deep in the middle of our cove. The middle of Mirror Lake is 30 feet deep.

The lodge is a 200+ year old converted barn with a giant stone fireplace. It is imbued with authentic charm and character. There is a large hot tub that is in a separate part of the building.

There is a beach, a dock, kayak, canoe and paddleboat that guests are free to use. Also on the grounds is a fire pit, picnic tables, and a very large, flat lawn with flower gardens and playing fields.

Guests are happily surprised by the size of our yard. It is a flat and grassy acre at the edge of the lake. We have croquet, bocce ball, and other games in the shed. There's even a large rectangular area that we set up for volley ball or badminton.

There is an owner's unit on the bottom floor of the house that we use on weekends and vacations. We have a separate yard and entrance. If any issues arise when we are not there, guests are encouraged to contact our local caretaker who lives nearby.

We have a full kitchen equipped with a stove, microwave, toaster, griddle, coffee maker, pots and pans, and most items you would normally need to make a meal. There is also an outdoor gas grill and an outdoor dining area. Within 15 minutes are 2 large grocery stores, several organic food stores, a state liquor store, and specialty wine and beer shops.

If you wish to go out to eat, there are a wide range of good options from pizza and sugar shacks to microbreweries and fine dining. Please ask us for a list of local recommendations and favorites.

If the party is over 12, it is $25 more per person, per night - this includes children and day visitors. Please check with us in advance if you are planning on additional guests. The house and the house facilities are designed to handle a limited number of people (12). If you want to host a special event, make sure to discuss with us ahead of time so we can see if it is possible to make arrangements.

We do allow up to two well-behaved dogs. We do require an additional refundable damage deposit if you bring your furry companion.

This property was perfect for what we wanted. We had 6 of us stay over two nights after my wedding. It provided privacy, was quiet, very clean and well appointed and had a great hot tub. We plan on coming back in the summer when we can do more exploring and use of the lake. The owners are amazing at communicating and were very helpful. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a quiet place to stay with lovely amenities.

Great place

  • 4 of 5

This old 200 yr old barn was great place for us. plenty of room for our family reunion (only 8 of us were able to go). Lots of beds. We brought our own kayaks however there were plenty to use. Gorgeous of our best weekends this year. Great outdoor fire pit, awesome deck. Down side is small kitchen... Old stove....however, we made do. The one bedroom next to the bathroom did have a smell to it, however, had a stained carpet, which someone thought an animal peed on?!? We didn't bring the dogs we planned on but it is a great place if you have one. Cobwebs around. But heck it's a barn!

Would totally rent this place again. Awesome wildlife on that lake...just beautiful. Thank you Laura!

Owner's Response: HI Linda, We are so glad your group enjoyed yourselves at the lodge Thank you for taking the time to review our property. We were very horrified to hear that you noticed a smell in one of the rooms. I wish you had alerted us immediately since we would have been happy to address the issue. As you know, our caretaker, Mike, responds quite quickly and our guests' comfort is very important to us. Now that we know, we will make sure to solve the issue. I also do apologize for the spider webs. We have great cleaners who scrub the lodge down after each renter, but it is hard to get the webs out of the tallest rafters. Best, Laura

Everything we could have hoped for

Wonderful place! Water, hiking, kayaking/canoeing/swimming, birdwatching... We had a blast! our visit was a combination of several of my siblings and their young families, plus my parents. House was perfect for us all with 6 bedrooms, games for rainy days, fans in every room for hot days, and a big kitchen table for dinners. Kids and adults had fun snorkeling the water looking for fish, frogs and salamanders. Saw an osprey and bald eagle out near rocks while kayaking. Mike, the care taker was a great help. Just had a great time at this rustic, charming spot!

Great family vacation spot

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week in early August with 11 people ranging from 3 mos to 70 years old. Overall we had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the place. The yard is huge and already had a badminton net set up when we arrived and lots of other yard games in the shed. The description states 1 kayak, but we were pleased to find 2 of them when we arrived and we really loved the paddle boat. The lake is quite calm since motor boats are not allowed and it made for very relaxing rides on the water.

The house itself has lots of room with 6 bedrooms with a queen or full bed in each. The two upstairs bedrooms are loft style and larger with each having a separate twin bed so you could put 3 people each in those rooms. There was also a pack-and-play that we found and used. The house is very comfortable and very old/ rustic looking, adding to the charm. There were a good supply of window fans and oscillating my fans to stay cool plus two floor a/c units (though we didn't use those). Only downside to the old house was the stairs leading up to the loft bedrooms were very creaky and made it impossible to silently go up/down in the middle of the night when dealing with our infant.

The hot tub was an excellent bonus!

Another thing that the kids loved was access to the public beach raft just outside of the cove. It was a very short paddle around the corner to get there.

My wife says If it included washer and dryer, we would have rated at 5 stars. We instead ended up using the same day drop off laundry service at the Thornton laundromat. $1 per pound of clothes for wash/dry/fold. Very little to complain about here.

Great Family Get Away

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 9 days for a mini family reunion with ages 5 to 73. It was a fantastic spot. The kids spent hours catching frogs, boating, swimming, fishing, jumping off the raft a the public beach around the corner and playing with a whole variety of lawn games/water toys in the shed. The shallow cove was a safe and clearly defined place for the kids to play in the water. The adults also had a blast, which included successful trout fishing from a rocky point in the lake, early morning yoga on the dock and lots of board games. We enjoyed several dinners on the deck using the large grill. Watching for shooting stars on the deck and enjoying the milkyway was also fantastic- especially for those of us from the city. There is also a nice campfire area for evening s'more-making. The place was clean and kitchen generally well stocked- we did all our cooking onsite-town was a short distance away and getting groceries easy , and the owners, who were there the first day we arrived were extremely friendly and helpful with a few questions. Within a short drive were many hiking trails. Some we enjoyed were Georgiana Falls, The Flume, Mt. Pemigewassett and Rattlesnake Mtn. The location is close to the highway and before arriving we wondered about highway noise but although if you listen you can hear it, you soon forget about it. Our family particularly enjoyed that the accommodations were rustic-looking but comfortable- with all the amenities. Mirror lake is also one of the most studied small lakes in the world, due to the presence of Hubbard Brook Research Station down the road, and this was of great interest to the scientists in our family, who visited the station and read some of the research about its water quality over the years in a book on the lake present at the house. They say the lake is the second cleanest in NH!

Great for a getaway, cozy and fun!

  • 5 of 5

This was a great retreat for a bunch of high school friends and husbands/wives for a fall weekend up north. The property was just as described, very well maintained and both the owner and caretaker are in touch, available and obviously care a lot about you having a good experience and the property.

Right on the water, a small lake (no powerboats)- house provides kayak and paddleboat, both of which we used, large side lawn for lawn games and a badminton court set up. The outdoor fire pit is in the perfect location off the dock and we had a fire both nights.

We had a fabulous time at Mirror Lake Lodge. The lake is very clean, beautiful and peaceful. It was so much fun to swim, kayak, paddleboard and canoe. We were lucky to be there during the summer meteor showers and the stargazing was amazing. The house had plenty of room to accomodate my 3 teenaged girls and a couple of their friends. It is very rustic but that added to the charm. We loved sitting by the firepit at night. When it rained, we completed a complicated puzzle. There were some decent restaurants not too far away. We had a lot of fun at Tony's one evening listening to the open mike night. It was a good old fashioned family vacation that we will always remember. It was wonderful to find a house where we could bring our dog. She loved it :) Laura and Kevin are great!

From the Owner

In the summers when we visited my parents, my husband and I used to come to Mirror Lake because it's the best place to swim in the area. The water is so clean and clear and the shore is so wooded. We had been looking for a place on a lake for years and when we saw the lodge was for sale, we knew that this was the place. We met with Annemarie, the previous owner, who was (and is) great. We were lucky to have her teach us how she had successfully run the lodge for the last 15 years. We plan to keep the spirit of Mirror Lake Lodge going as the perfect place for families and friends to make lifelong memories.

North Woodstock is in the heart of the White Mountains. Just 15 minutes from Loon, one of the largest ski mountains in New Hampshire, and very close to state-owned Cannon Mountain and Waterville Valley (x-country and downhill), the area is ski and snowboard heaven. In the warmer months, there is hiking through miles of National and State Forests, including the Appalachian Trail. Within Woodstock are rivers, waterfalls and gorges to explore with short hikes. Kids and grownups will enjoy Clarks Trading Post and Polar Caves or a scenic rides at Hobo Railroad or the Lafayette Dining Train. Need a break? Great restaurants and bars in nearby Woodstock, Lincoln and Campton. Shopping your bag? Not far either from Garnet Hill outlet (my mom's favorite) in Franconia and adorable downtown Littleton, NH (check out Just L for mid-century modern furniture). Also close to outlet shopping centers in North Conway and Tilton.
