Owner purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2013
Why Owner chose Cañon City
We looked for 2 years before purchasing Soaring Eagle. We wanted beautiful scenery, serenity (no road noise - just the wind in the trees). We wanted to see wildlife: deer, elk, antelope, fox, bobcat, etc. It has wonderful water - its own well so we are able to have a lovely garden in front of our house.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
The home has southern exposures and views from almost every room. The interior is paneled and has a wood smell when you walk in. I love the flow of the house. From the deck we have a plethora of hummingbirds and other local birds in the summer. They look like flying jewels. :-)

Beautiful house up in the mountains with stunning views. Sunrises and sunsets are amazing. Our kids loved seeing the stars so vividly.
Joyce and Michael are excellent hosts.
Annual Friends Weekend
Was a good weekend, the views of the valley were good. The smoke from the Salida fire spoiled the second evening. Felt a little uncomfortable with owners working in yard on Sunday. Overall had a great time and would recommend this vrbo to others.
We had a great time at this secluded home. The view off the back deck is amazing. Very spacious, we had 4 adults and 2 kids staying there very comfortably.
Super unique property
When we reserved, we were unaware of just how far up in the mountains this place was. They are not kidding when they tell you to hit the grocery store first. It’s a 50 minute drive from Cañon City proper. Once you’re there, you won’t want to leave. The views are spectacular and the nearest paved road is a 35 minute drive.
The house is great, very comfortable, but they do have a good deal of random things laying around here and there (around the house and on the property as well); broken chairs stuffed under the hot tub deck, old hot tub cover rotting near the deck, snow shovel left out in summer, ladders on the deck, broken tiles, and other stuff near the teepee. I also saw no mention in the listing that the owners live in the basement, but they do. This was not too much of an issue, as they mostly made themselves scarce. However, on our last night, my husband and I were sitting alone by the fire when the owners returned from a trip to town, and Mike (owner) came to say hello. This would have been no big deal, except he wanted to start a lengthy conversation about politics and Colorado gun laws. As politely as we could, we explained that we did not wish to discuss politics on vacation, and that we didn’t have much time left to enjoy our time together on vacation. Thankfully, he finally took the hint and went inside.
I have to stress how gorgeous this property is and how glad I am that we found it, I’d love to come back for a longer retreat. It is just really important for VRBO owners to understand that folks don’t want to pay $208 per night to hang out with you, so unless you’re needed, make yourself scarce. No offense, I’m sure you’re terrific people, but we’re on a family vacation. Our time together is precious!
Cannot say enough how magnificent this property is, you’ll have tons of space to explore and you’ll wear yourself out taking pictures!
In our listing we tell people our distance from Canon city, the Royal Gorge rafting area and grocery stores. We also make sure people know that we live in the walkout. I'm sorry that these guests didn't read the listing. We always want to be sure we are a good match.
Please accept my apologies for Michael being so chatty. I will be sure that such an incident doesn't happen again. Since you said in your review that you would like to return for a longer stay I will give you a discount for your inconvenience on this trip.
Again, my apologies for the intrusion.
Wonder Place To Stay
Beautiful cabin with a great view! The owners were very accommodating and went out of their way to be sure we had everything we needed. We plan to hopefully stay there again! We do apologize to Joyce- we ran the dishwasher as requested the night before we left, and did not realize until later that the children had used glasses in the morning and placed them in the empty dishwasher - we found out later as we were discussing our trip down the road! You can't go wrong staying at this place!
Thank you so much! We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. No worries about the glasses - you left the place so clean and neat. Thank you so much. :-) Please come and see us again.
