About Liz Trunkfield
Jeff and I moved here at the beginning of 2004 from the UK. We decided to do something we have always dreamed of and that is to live in France. We both left demanding jobs and set about renovating the house and gite. Great fun and a huge amount of work! But we got there and now have a lovely home and a popular gite. We are in the country and so look forward to our guests arriving and meeting them all.
Liz Trunkfield purchased this Cottage in 2004
Why Liz Trunkfield chose Val-des-Vignes
We chose this property as it was something we never thought we could possibly have owned in the UK. It sits in just under 2 acres and has views to die for. Chateauneuf sur Charente is really what persuaded us this was the right area for us. Pretty French town and the river runs through it. It was originally the home of the local vineyard owner and even today his son tends the vines which surround the property. The house has amazing views and the scenery especially from the upper floors, really persuaded us.
What makes this Cottage unique
When we first saw the house, the original features were well hidden but we could see the potential. We renovated to keep it very much a beautiful French house but with good plumbing!

Chez Briand is strictly no smoking. Pets I am afraid are not allowed. We tried in the past but it seems too many people have allergies these days.We try to keep the cottage to the highest standard and ask our guests to respect the house. WE do not charge for cleaning but ask our guests to leave the property, clean and tidy . If you have an early departure or just plain don't fancy cleaning, please let me know and I can arrange for extra cleaning support to come in. This is an extra charge and details can be given on request. Apart from this, common sense in gear, relax and have a great relaxing holiday.

A lovely country gite close to all amenities
We arrived in Jurignac very late around midnight and needed shepherding by Jeff from the centre of the village to the house 2km outside. We knew all would be well for our stay as soon as Jeff took us on a good natured late night tour of our accommodation. Our hosts provided a welcome pack of ham, cheese, butter, bread, jam, milk, tea and coffee, bottled water etc which was most appreciated along with a bottle of wine. The gite kitchen is very well equipped with lots of what you need to cook a meal however elaborate. Lots of towels, including beach towels, tea-towels, bed linen etc is provided also. We had hot weather of around 32 degrees most days so having the pool to splash around in was brilliant and Jeff is very careful to keep it clean and heated. There are several different areas outside to sit and relax and bicycles to ride. One thing, as another person has noted, is that we couldn't access the internet anywhere else but in the lounge. Being very rural the internet is still accessed through copper wire and quite a weak signal of only about 3.7Mb (using Ookla phone app) through a shared router. With the thick structural walls of the traditional farmhouse to penetrate it's quite understandable that the signal in our part of the building was patchy. The countryside around the gite is stunning with rolling hills and valleys and is great for a walk or a scenic but challenging run or bike ride! There is no need to worry about shopping here as Jurignac has a great little shop (at the back of the school) which stocks anything from bread to toiletries. It also has a small butchery area and even a small bar to one side as well. There are also outside tables to the front. Excellent large supermarkets are within 7 kms at Chateauneuf and Barbezieux and a huge Auchan is located on the outskirts of Angouleme and very easily accessed via the close by N10. We had a very enjoyable and relaxing two weeks made all the better by Liz and Jeff who are lovely, warm and welcoming hosts. We hope to see them again.
Very peaceful holiday
We had a lovely 2 week stay in this cottage which is only has 2 neighbours (one of those are the owners) and is surrounded by fields of sunflowers and vines. The property itself is an excellent size and is well equipped, although the WiFi only works in the lounge. The swimming pool is excellent and Jeff really takes excellent care of it. It was warm, clean and a good size for splashing around in.
It is a rural setting and the nearest supermarket is a 15 minute drive away (there are a few to choose from). La Rochelle is about an hour and 45 minutes drive, Cognac a little over 30 minutes and Angouleme 20 minutes. It is also a short drive to the Dordogne region.
Jeff is around to offer advice if you need it, but generally they leave you alone to enjoy holiday. Overall we had an excellent stay.
Lovely property in a lovely location
This is a very nice house in a wonderfully peaceful location. Jeff and Liz were welcoming hosts, and Jeff was very helpful whenever it was needed. Well equipped, with a relaxing living room. Wi-fi was limited to the lounge. Pool was a great place to relax in the sun - and we had a glorious three weeks of sunshine. Good sized bedrooms and bathrooms, all very comfortable. Great for a family holiday - it was a shame ours had to leave early!
Fabulous week, great cottage
The cottage was lovely and cool (temperatures 30-35c outside). The pool was wonderful and the games facilities very good. The area is very peaceful and the shop in Jurignac was great. The cottage is surrounded by sunflowers, cornfields and vines - very, very rural. Liz and Jeff were very hospitable and nothing was too much bother. All in all we had a wonderful time and would thoroughly recommend it.
So happy you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for the lovely review. You were lovely guests and would welcome you back anytime

Wonderful French Holiday
Had a great time at Chez Briand, Liz and Jeff both very welcoming delightful people with a beautiful Gite. Had a great week travelling around the area from this wonderful base.
01/08/15 - Everything we had hoped for and more
A Fantastic holiday for all of us. The owners were lovely and very helpful without being obtrusive. The accommodation was just as described? It was clean and well maintained throughout. The furnishings were comfortable and very homely and the catering facilities and equipment available were more than adequate for all the family. Outside, the raised pool was an absolute godsend not only because of the very hot spell we had but also because we could relax in the knowledge that the 2 year old could not gain direct access! There was every conceivable outside game available too, plus a first class BBQ, outside furniture and gazebo.
The area is rural but there were very adequate shopping facilities 5 miles away also interesting places to visit, however, the cottage was so comfortable we did stay "at home" more than we had originally intended.
We would certainly recommend this property and look forward to returning.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. We work hard to maintain and raise the standards of our gite and hearing your comments makes all the work worthwhile.
You were most welcome at our house, the perfect guests.
I would be delighted to welcome you back again

Jurignac is a quiet little village, surrounded by vineyards, which has a small grocers/boulangerie/cage/bar , a post office and it's very own Cognac house, where you can sample and buy the village's own label cognac.. Easy to get to, the nearest on/off for the RN 10 is about 3 miles, this access allows you to travel to other parts of the area and see many of the other beautiful villages and towns close by. Angouleme, a large town with a wonderful 'old town' full of busy restaurants and shopping , is just 20 minutes drive away. It also boasts a fabulous water park, Nautilus, which has both indoor and outdoor pools. The smaller towns of Chateauneuf and Barbezieux, again both with open air swimming pools for daytime fun and a good selection of restaurants and bars for the evening. The summer temperatures are usually very warm, and the River Charente is close by (less than 10 minutes) and there you can swim if you wish or enjoy a drink at the riverside bars and restaurants.
Other Activities: There is a very large garden at the rear of the property and is ideal for children to play. Ideal for cricket and football.
Golf: There are 3 golf courses within 35 minutes. One in Cognac, one in Angouleme and the other in Aubeterre.
Each club welcomes day visitors.
