Casa Hermosa is located in the exclusive gated community of Palm Beach Estates in Playa Grande. Playa Grande, which is named one of the top 10 in the World by Travel and Leisure in 2013, is located immediately north of the beach community of Tamarindo and is considered one of the best surfing beaches in the world. It is also famous as a major nesting site for the highly endangered leatherback sea turtle, the largest reptile on Earth. The house is ideally located on the southern end of the 3 kilometer beach, less than 200 meters from the water and within the sound of the crashing surf.

The Spanish styled home has been professionally decorated to reflect the natural beauty of the area and thoughtfully organized to meet all your needs. The house has been recently renovated with new furniture, entertainment center and decorations.

The front room can be opened up to connect with the great room, providing a spacious place for everyone to gather but still provide cozy areas to meet everyone’s needs. In the great room, you will find an entertainment center, including a new 60” flat screen TV, DVD player and music system for MP3 players, high speed WiFi internet. The gourmet kitchen is beautifully laid out with granite counters, breakfast bar, a full stainless steel freezer and refrigerator, European gas stove, microwave oven, dishwasher, and custom cabinets. This kitchen is fully stocked for all occasions, whether that’s for a party of two or ten.

The sliding doors in the great room open out to a large outside patio, private pool and garden. You can enjoy breakfast or evening drinks while the beautiful birds visit the garden. The pool provides a refreshing oasis after a hot day of excursions and a wonderful place to gather and play.

The master bedroom, with high vaulted ceiling and wrap around patio is a perfect place to find serenity. There is also a small work area, with a desk where you can catch up with work if needed. Additional flat screen TV, dvd, music system and a comfortable couch makes the master bedroom a suite on its own. The iron-gated porch outside the master bedroom is set up to give you some peace and shade throughout the day.

About the Owner

We discovered Playa Grande while we were staying at nearby Playa Langosta. On a recommendation from a local surfer, we decided to have dinner at Bula Bula and check out the hidden gem of a beach that everyone was raving about. With happy hour drinks in our hands, we sat and watched a spectacular sunset and decided this was one of the most magical places in Costa Rica.

On our next trip, we decided to stay in Playa Grande for 3 weeks. For us, Playa Grande combine the best of Costa Rica—beautiful pristine beach, surf, wildlife, no crowds, natural beauty, comfort, and wonderful people. We knew we wanted to be part of this paradise and decided to buy a house. We chose Casa Hermosa because the house is beautifully constructed and we could hear the ocean waves while still being just far enough to not bother the turtles that grace the beach to nest. We also loved the fact that the house is in the National Park and we are committed to doing our part in making sure that Playa Grande stays pristine, beautiful and magical.

We live in San Jose, California, which isn’t a bad place to live either. However, we look forward to every opportunity we get to spend some wonderful time in Casa Hermosa with family and friends. We hope you will have many lasting memories.

Beautiful House, Perfect for Families and Groups

  • 5 of 5

We have rented several houses in Playa Grande over the years, and this was by far the most comfortable and well maintained. The house is spacious enough for larger groups -- though there were only six of us, we had two kids under the age of 12 and two grandparents over 70, so having two living areas helped. The pool, cleaned daily, is also a good size. And the house is well stocked with everything you need, from extra towels to extra corkscrews. We look forward to staying here again.

Fantastic property, location and community

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here with another couple and 3 kids for 2 weeks over Christmas and into the New Year. Honestly, I would easily vacation here again over and above many places we've been throughout Caribbean and Central America. There is much to do here (and generally in Costa Rica), friendly locals, very safe and great vibe.

This property is located in a great little community and as others have pointed out, several great restaurant options within walking distance (and others within a short drive), and a great little market - Wil*Mart - within walking distance.

This Playa Grande beach is very accessible, and fantastic. We spent a ton of time down there surfing and boogie-boarding. It is a great, all-sand beach sprinkled with shells. Back at the house - the pool was well-maintained, great daily cleaning service, AC worked well.

Given the drought situation (over and above being dry season) we did have water cut off or regulated a day or two, which alarmed us at first, but ended up not being a problem at all.

Would highly recommend and will actually consider this rental again! House is very spacious and well taken care of. Great location, pool, backyard and attentive care takers. Very safe location, friendly 'neighbours' and food, amenities within walking distance.

Pura Vida!

Perfect for family reunion

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family of 10, including 4 grandchildren, found the house and the setting perfect for our family vacation. The three bedrooms with private baths are perfect for couples and the bunk bed room is great for kids. The pool and yard were cared for daily. The amazing beach is minutes away, as is a nice convenience store, and restaurants - yet everything feels secluded and enjoyable. The daily maid service was a nice touch. The staff at Hotel Bula Bula was wonderful in managing the house and helping us arrange trips, etc. I'd especially recommend the boat trip through the estuary and the water taxis to Tamarindo. This is a beautiful home in a secluded area so the road is a bit rough, but well worth the surroundings and privacy. It was a perfect match for us.

Pura Vida!

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a week in this lovely home with another family we are good friends with. The house was perfectly suited to our needs with private baths off bedrooms and a bunk sleeping room so the kids (age 10-15) could camp out together. Accommodations were very comfortable overall, including regular maid service. You will not have access to washer/dryer so pack accordingly or plan on laundry service.

Playa Grande is a lovely little slice of heaven with the most pristine beach a short stroll from the house. There are 4 dining establishments within walking distance of the house, all of which provided a wonderful meal and ambiance. There are several more options a short drive away. There is a small market around the corner to provide you with what you need to make your stay more comfortable.

The pool was a big hit with everyone, providing a great source of entertainment for the kids and a way to quickly cool down. The sunsets on the beach are breathtaking. We recommend taking a small picnic, a wake board, soccer ball, or football down to the beach before dusk and then enjoy nature's show. Have a dinner reservation waiting for you after at one of the local establishments and you are set for the evening!

Tamarindo is about a 25 minute drive or a 10 minute walk to a boat (check hours of operation). It is a touristy town with shopping, dining, surf lessons. There is a larger market for more substantial shopping. This is a great place to learn to surf with long, rolling waves.

If you stay a week, I would recommend being selective on your excursions as getting places takes time. At the recommendation of our host, we did a zip line/horseback riding adventure one day and a river tour on another. Both were fabulous!

Renting a car is not a problem. You should check you coverage with your own insurance and consider buying the complete insurance package. Flat tires are not uncommon (though we didn't have that issue). Getting around is pretty straight forward with GPS. We recommend renting a 4 wheel drive. Roads into Playa Grande (and other possible destinations) are dirt and pot-holed. Some of the Playa Grande streets have such steep drainage ditches that a regular car can get hung up on them unless you know to maneuver slowly on an angle.

At the time of our visit, the Country was in drought. Water is a precious commodity to Costa Ricans and as a guest of their country, you will likely be asked to be considerate of its use.

A hide-away in heaven

  • 5 of 5

Our friends, my husband and I had a thoroughly wonderful time at Casa Hermosa. The accommodations are top class and the location ideal. The house has everything a family or group of friends might need for a vacation - towels, cookware, a lovely pool maintained daily, maid service...The pristine beach, which has more shells on it than I've ever seen, is a 3 minute walk from the house. There a several great restaurants within walking distance and quite a few more within a short drive. Be sure to have lunch at Taco Star. We certainly plan to visit Casa Hermosa again!

Perfect family vacation

  • 5 of 5

In early December, 2014 our family agreed we needed to set up plan to meet for long awaited vacation and reunion. The idea of an all-inclusive resort was just not what we wanted but a house rental better suited our needs. After some time investigating properties and regions, Costa Rica was agreed upon and Casa Hermosa was located on and booked for the week of Feb. 23rd. Our family consists of our daughter and son-in- law who live in Malaga Spain, our son and daughter-in-law, their two daughters ages 8 and 6 and my wife and I who all live in Ontario, Canada. Our connections to Costa Rica all worked well and we all met the same day at Casa Hermosa (our daughter arrived the day previous). The house was more beautiful than what we had expected including seperate spacious bedrooms with private bathrooms for everyone, a very elegant master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and a room with bunk beds for the kids. Our grandaughters didn't take long to change into their bathing suits and straight into the deck front swimming pool. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the pool is cleaned twice daily by a groundskeeper. The well equipped modern kitchen suited us very well as we had planned on preparing our own meals as much as possible using local products. We hired a lady (Veronica) one day to cook our dinner using fish we had caught on a fishing charter in the morning. For a very reasonable rate she prepared a four course meal that was excellent. The beach is only a short walk away and is amazing because of it's length, beautiful sand, incoming waves and no crowds of people. In fact it almost feels like a private beach that goes on forever.

This house served our family perfectly for a wonderful vacation including all the extra curricular activities including zip-lining, horseback riding, deep sea fishing, river cruise, boogie boarding etc etc. Thank you Linda Golan for allowing your charming home to be made available for rent and for your help in making our family reuinion a success.

We would highly recommend Playa Grande and Casa Hermosa to anyone wishing to visit Costa Rica.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Liberia at 55 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Playa Grande at 100 Metres Car: not necessary

Playa Grande is truly spectacular. At high tide, large waves provide excellent surfing and boogie boarding. At low tide, a sand flat extends more than 100 meters off the beach allowing the family to enjoy the waves in safety. The beach has no rocks to stub toes and is literally covered with sea shells. Water temperature is usually 82 degrees rendering wet suits pointless. The entire beachfront is now a national park to protect the nesting turtles and this has greatly limited development. As a result, the southern end of the beach is often deserted and never has more than small number of people. The western orientation provides spectacular sunsets and reduced night lighting (to protect the turtles) allows for phenomenal star gazing.

Palm Beach Estates has a small general store a quick five minute walk from the house. Next door is a surfing inn and school that has great instructors for visitors looking to try out the sport or improve their skills. Three excellent restaurants are a short walk from the house.

Boat tours of the beautiful estuary with its monkeys, crocodiles and birds, can also be arranged within walking distance. The limited traffic means the dirt roads are great for those looking to do a morning jog. The north end of the beach is a short five minute drive along the access road. North Playa Grande has a number of restaurants as well as surf shops and a spa.

Casa Hermosa’s southern location lets you take a beautiful 1 kilometer walk along the water to the estuary separating Playa Grande from Tamarindo. From there you can either take a 1 minute water taxi ($1/person) to Tamarindo or take the short swim depending on the tide. Tamarindo is the largest beach community in Guanacaste and has many amenities including shops, surf schools, tennis club, U.S. style grocery stores and dozens of excellent restaurants. If you have a car, you can also get to Tamarindo by driving 25 minutes around the estuary.
