5 bedroom

At Los Portales, life gets a little easier the second you walk through the front door.

This stunning, five-bedroom vacation rental home is quietly nestled in the lavish green hills of Escaleras, one of the most breathtaking locations in the entire southern Pacific zone of Costa Rica and a favorite destination of many travelers to the Dominical and Uvita areas.

With massive jungle-to-ocean views on both the top and bottom floors, an infinity pool ripped right out of the pages of “House Beautiful Magazine” and enough space to accommodate large families or groups, Los Portales is a perfect choice for an unforgettable vacation in paradise.

Located less than a 10-minute drive off the Pan-American Highway and sitting at an elevation of 335 meters (1,100 feet), Los Portales faces due west – directly at the Pacific Ocean below – and is subject to brilliant breezes all day long, from the crisp morning offshore winds filtering through the eastern hills to the afternoon sea breeze that’ll keep you feeling refreshed and relaxed from sun up to sun down.

The home’s top floor features two bedrooms, including an elegant master bedroom, large kitchen and living room areas, as well as a wrap-around patio deck with marvelous ocean views to the north and south, including a direct shot at the famous “Whale’s Tail” of Uvita.

The kitchen area is fully stocked with all modern appliances (dishwasher, stove, oven, microwave and refrigerator), while the living room contains multiple couches, chairs and a large flat-screen television. A bedroom adjacent to the living room has a king bed and an attached bathroom. There is also a washer-dryer unit upstairs. The ceiling on the top floor is more than eight meters high, giving off a charming, airy feel from the moment you step inside.

For sheer luxury, the master bedroom can’t be beat. There are full ocean sightlines from its comfortable king bed and some excellent local artwork on the walls. Furthermore, there’s a jet-powered spa tub in the bathroom with a complete jungle view through glass panels. The master bedroom also features European and American toilets and a private shower.

On the bottom floor, where the 11-meter infinity pool sits, are three additional bedrooms as well as a large, open-air living area with an absolutely gorgeous wood bar that’s perfect for hosting big events or small gatherings.

One of the downstairs bedrooms has its own bathroom and king bed. The other two bedrooms share a bathroom. Of those two rooms, one has a king bed and the other a pair of twin beds. There’s an additional outdoor bathroom near the pool and a shower for rinsing off.

Speaking of the pool, plan to spend a lot of time there. The views are magical and there’s enough space to swim laps for extended exercise. In addition, there are barstools under water so you and your guests can belly up and enjoy a few cocktails when you’re tired from all that swimming.

Los Portales also has a secret wooden patio perched in the trees on its south end. Here, you can sneak into the hammock with a book, escaping the sun and all of life’s little issues, too. Before settling in, it might be best to grab some passion fruit from the trees below and call it an afternoon.

In addition to all the aforementioned amenities, the property features 24-hour live-in security. Driving to the surf in Dominical or shopping stores in Uvita will take less than 20 minutes from the driveway to your final destination.

Trust us, there are many spectacular vacation rentals in the area and Los Portales, in terms of comfort, charm, local flair and versatility stands as one of the premier properties available to tourists from all over the world.

No air conditioning required! Along with the amazing Pacific coast views, this property affords an elevation of 1,100 feet above sea level. The altitude allows for a cooler climate (day and night temps) with great breezes off the ocean during the day and even cooler mountain breezes at night. The house has been architecturally designed for cross ventilation, and the surrounding mature jungle also helps to shade the house and outdoor living spaces.

The Danna V Family: May 27- June 4, 2016

Our family vacation at Los Portales was incredible, we couldn’t have imagined it any better.

From the beginning both Neil and Stephen were great at answering my hundreds of questions and assisting me with transportation and excursions; they had all of the answers.

When we arrived at Los Portales we were all mesmerized by the beauty of our surroundings and the sights and sounds of the jungle animals, and remained that way for the next 8 days. The house is immaculate, the beds all nice quality, comfortable and clean. The house is welcoming, bright, open, and breezy with plenty of space. The kitchen both beautiful and very clean has everything you need to prepare anything for a large group of people.

The outdoor living spaces (there are three) are unbelievable! The gardens surrounding the house are as perfect as the house. Everything is matured, flowered and beautiful. The infinity swimming pool is amazing and was one of our family’s favorite places to spend the morning, afternoon and evening. The house is appropriately named… the portals that stretch the entire length of the house are lined with rocking chairs, furniture and a dining table that allowed us all to share our meals together which really added to the overall family vacation. We spent many hours overlooking the ocean, cherishing the outstanding sights and sounds and adoring the natural life inhabiting the jungle around us (monkey’s, sloths, birds, frogs, geccos, iguanas, butterflies, and many other animals).

Vicki and Douglas, the caretakers, assisted us every step of the way helping us to feel welcome and safe. On the last night of our stay they came to say goodbye and brought the two children stuffed animals to remember their visit (a sloth and a monkey). My grandson has not put his monkey down since our return home. Their help and hospitality really demonstrated the kindness of the local culture.

Thank you Neil, Stephen, Vicki and Douglas, we can hardly wait to return to Los Portales!

Incredible villa, incredible vacation

  • 5 of 5

The Villa is astounding. Set in the jungle with incredible views, troops of monkeys, and all modern amenities. Swimming in the infinity pool overlooking the jungle and ocean and having a drink on the terrace watching the birds and listening to the monkeys were highlights. The location made eco-adventuring easy--we had adventures almost everyday day, each trip less than an hour away. Our host Stephen was incredibly helpful and informative and took care of all the adventure bookings and provided directions. He even connected us with an excellent chef to cook dinner at the villa on my wife's birthday. The beaches and restaurants are only minutes away. Our best family vacation ever.

Gorgeous House -- Perfect for a Large Family or Group of Friends

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 9 friends who gathered at Los Portales for a fun vacation. The villa was stunningly beautiful, clean and well maintained, the kitchen huge and so easy to work in, and each bedroom had its own advantages. Best of all was the warm and welcoming swimming pool -- it seems to have been everyone's favorite place! The managers and caretakers are all BRILLIANT and very kind, the gardens and views just exceptional -- I cannot recommend Los Portales highly enough! When you come do NOT miss the chance to have Stu prepare at least one meal for you. He prepared two for us -- each delicious and well presented. He's a GEM!

Los Portales - Absolutely Stunning Villa

  • 5 of 5

My family just returned from a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to beautiful Costa Rica. We had the opportunity to stay at the beautiful Los Portales Villa near the town of Dominical on the Central Pacific Coast. Pictures can sometimes make things look better than they actually are. That was not the case with Los Portales as it was everything as advertised. The house very comfortably accommodated our group of 10 which included my wife and I, our four adult children, daughter-in-law and three teenage grandchildren. The house, grounds and the hillside view of the jungle and the Pacific Ocean are absolutely gorgeous! The four bedrooms and the four baths are all very spacious and well appointed. The large kitchen is well equipped. The house has two large common areas with fantastic views that are great for group gathering and dining. The infinity pool with it's view of the ocean and jungle is stunning! Our entire group started and ended each day in the pool. In addition to the great common areas for large groups, this house offers great separation of space for some privacy as well. Enjoyed the sights and sounds of the monkeys and birds each day. The beach and the small one road beach town of Dominical are close by as are several restaurants and a large supermarket. An abundance of outdoor activities are within close range. Our group engaged in swimming, fishing, zip-lining and surfing and had a great time. Neil, the property manager was very accommodating and easy to work with. Check-in and check-out went very smoothly and with his recommendations, transportation and the logistics of all of our activities proceeded without a hitch. We arranged for a minibus to take all 10 of us to and from the airport in San Jose (3 hrs) and had the rental cars waiting for us at the house. This eliminated a lot of stress and time at the beginning and end of our trip. Los Portales provides both on-site maintenance and house keeping which was great. A very nice small local family serve as the caretakers and live just a little way up the long driveway to the property. Very nice and helpful people who were not intrusive at all. It was great to have fresh towels and the place swept out each day. Other than to say hello as we drove in and out of the property each day, we hardly saw them but enjoyed it when we did. This was an awesome trip and stay at Los Portales. Thanks Neil for all you did to make this a truly once-in-a -lifetime opportunity for our entire family!!

Los Portales Rules!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had an incredible stay at Los Portales. In fact, my mother-in-law has posted about 100 photos of the amazing villa on Facebook since returning home. Suffice to say, she was very happy to stay in such a nice house. Neil, the property manager, was super accommodating, and the on-site help did a wonderful job. This really is a prefect setup for larger groups. The downstairs bar and pool area is immaculate, and the noise level never seems to reach the upper floor of the villa. Full ocean views, monkeys in the trees, bright and colorful decor throughout the villa and beautiful weather. If I could give Los Portales six stars I would!

Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

Myself, my wife and 3 daughters spent a week at Los Portales along with 5 other relatives. The house is perfect! Fully equipped with everything you can possibly think of. I honestly can not think of 1 complaint. Steve met us in Dominical and escorted us up to the property to walk through with us. The housekeeper and maintenance man were excellent and kept the property spotless during our stay. 5am wake up every morning to the sounds of the howler monkeys and enjoying the mornings by the gorgeous pool overlooking the Pacific will not be forgotten. Perfect location, close to the beach and plenty of restaurants as well as a supermarket not too far down the road. There is also an awesome pub located in the house that is right next to the pool and was put to good use in the evenings for some music and cocktails to wind down. We were able to do a day trip to the Rafiki lodge and spend the day white water rafting(amazing). Surfing lessons were given to our daughter by Steve and they loved it! All in all, an amazing place to stay and we will be back. Thank You for an amazing week in Dominical!

The Pinnacle of Beauty and Comfort

  • 5 of 5

Los Portales, in a nutshell, is a breathtaking villa. Our group of seven met Neil at his home, then followed him up the mountain to the property. The drive up the mountain requires a 4x4 (not an All-Wheel Drive), so be prepared.

From the time we pulled into the driveway, we were in awe. Our joy increased with every step through the property. Neil explained all of the features of this well-appointed home, and even provided us with an additional pool float as the cherry on top. We recommend that you take advantage of the candle holders that are available throughout the exterior of the property. Candles will decrease the number of flying critters that are attracted to light in the evening. We brought a large package of tea lights and a couple packs of mosquito repellent sticks. We used nearly all of the tea lights in our 10 days, but did NOT use a single stick of the mosquito repellent. So, no need to cart those with you on your international journey to this magical place.

The sweeping 180 degree view is jaw dropping. To the south you can see the Whale’s Tail, and on a clear day you can see the Osa Peninsula and Cano Island. Surrounded by jungle on all sides, you feel part of nature. Waking up in the morning to the sounds of howler monkeys, toucans, and macaws was the best way to start the day. Oh, how we miss that. Our wildlife highlight was a sloth crawling slowly (obviously) across the front yard. We named him Pita.

The kitchen is well equipped, and the downstairs bar is perfect for making drinks (frozen or otherwise) while hanging out in the best pool we’ve ever seen in a vacation property. Downstairs kitchen included a refrigerator/freezer, elegant plastic glass-wear, trash receptacles, a sink for cleaning up, and a blender. Main kitchen has everything you need to make delicious meals.

While most of our time was spent in the pool, we did manage to get out of the pool and go on two awesome tours: Horseback Riding to Nauyaca Waterfall, and Snorkeling around Cano Island with lunch and hike at Corcovado National Park. We also got massages. The masseuses set up the massage tables on a recently completed deck that juts out into the jungle on the south side of the home. Perfection! We highly recommend ALL of these activities.

While there are many options to choose from in Dominical, the best decision we made was Los Portales. Worth every penny. Thank you Neil and the rest of the staff for everything you do!
