Charming Vintage Cottage on Queen Anne Bluff

Property Details

Updated: Oct 13, 2016
A Private Cottage with spacious 1 bedroom, 1 bath

The city? Or a private retreat? Le Bijou truly offers its guests the best of both worlds. Located just steps from the hustle and bustle of downtown Seattle — imagine the sights and sounds of the Theater District, Space Needle, Pike Place Market, museums, and more — this beautifully kept jewel is located on historic Queen Anne Hill, the highest point in the city at 520’ above sea level.

'Le Bijou' of Queen Anne (The Jewel of Queen Anne) is a 1909 Craftsman-style cottage located on the western bluff facing Puget Sound in coveted Queen Anne. It has its own entry and sits overlooking a courtyard. Restored to perfection to preserve the Arts & Crafts details of the early 20th century, this home features charming crown molding and wainscoting, as well as lathe and plaster ceilings. The walls and original old growth fir floors were lovingly and meticulously repaired and given new life.

~Le Bijou is completely equipped with all the modern conveniences and luxuries one would hope to find in totally up-to-date accommodations in the city . . . yet it’s nestled in a private, quiet, intimate Queen Anne neighborhood.

~You’ll enter the cottage along a bricked walkway. Go through the front garden to the courtyard and you’ll find the entrance to the cottage. Le Bijou epitomizes the phrase 'private retreat.'

~The living room retains its original architectural elements, with the addition of a gas fireplace to take the chill out of the evening air. A beautiful antique cherry mantel with marble surround is a focal point of the living room.

~Do you long for a truly decadent night’s sleep in a fabulous bed? Well, we’ve provided for that, too. Through French doors, you will find the master bedroom, where you’ll embark on what very well may be the best night’s sleep you’ve ever had. We have personally researched and selected luxury, earth-friendly mattresses that can be adjusted for you and your sleeping partner’s unique comfort preferences. Our mattress covers, deluxe mattress toppers, and pillows have also been carefully vetted and chosen, in partnership with a seasoned bedding expert, for your total comfort. All materials in our beds and bedding are natural, as pure as can be from chemical additives, and good for the body, contributing to a truly wonderful and completely healthy sleep environment. We’re confident you won’t go "Sleepless in Seattle".

There is additional queen-sized bed in the living room. This sofa/hide-a-bed, made by American Leather, is the finest, most comfortable convertible bed made. It is NOT your typical hide-a-bed. Of course, the linens are all selected specifically for your comfort with their perfect weight, drape, and breathability, and always freshly ironed for your arrival.

~ The kitchen has everything a cook could want: handsome original cabinetry, plus a farmer's cast iron apron sink, exquisite tile work, and a granite table with 2 whimsical chairs that remind your host of 'Alice in Wonderland' and the Red Queen at tea in the garden.

~The bathroom is well stocked with everything to pamper you: heated floors, a restored claw foot cast iron soaking tub, 48" granite-topped vanity with ample drawer space for longer stays, and a graciously sized shower. Turkish towels of the highest quality are provided for you, as well as top of the line, spa quality cleansing products. For stays longer than 7 days, fresh linens and towels will be provided.

'Le Bijou' is completely separated from the main house on the property and totally self-sufficient, as if you were staying in your own residence. You’ll enter the brick courtyard along a bricked garden path, past a unique garden cultivated at the front of the property. You’ll be welcomed into the courtyard with perennial and annual flowers comprising a lush garden atmosphere. You can barbecue your catch of the day and spend the afternoon in comfortable seating enjoying the sunshine or sitting around the fire pit. Or you might while away an afternoon or evening relaxing, barbecuing, conversing around a fire in the evening, dining by moonlight, and enjoying the magnificent views from the bluff and Puget Sound.

Upon entering the property along a lighted brick path in front of the main house, Le Bijou cottage and its courtyard are located down a walkway to the left. A lockbox is provided for guests for convenient daytime or nighttime access.

Your host lives in the main home on the property and is available to answer questions, provide information, or find what might be missing from the kitchen, or anything else you may need.

West Queen Anne is on the bluff overlooking Puget Sound, West Seattle, the Olympic Range and Cruise Ship Terminal. The immediate area is easily accessible to the Theater District, Seattle Center/Space Needle, shopping, fine and casual dining, and boutique bars and pubs in upper and lower Queen Anne, artisanal bakeries, quaint shops, Pike Place Market, SAM (Seattle Art Museum), many university level educational facilities, and more. All major hospitals — Virginia Mason Hospital, Swedish Medical Center, Group Health Hospital, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute, and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — are within 10 to 15 minutes. You’ll find Queen Anne to be an artistically thought out, calm, peaceful haven within the heart of the city's hustle and bustle.

'Le Bijou' of Queen Anne is located one-half block from the bus stop and within easy walking distance of Lower and Upper Queen Anne, Seattle Center/Theater District, The Gates Foundation. It’s just a short hop to South Lake Union and all of Seattle's many attractions, while providing the ultimate privacy and comfort in a beautiful setting. For longer distances, a car is recommended.

Location and accommodations are ideal for visitors, vacationers, and executives. It’s also ideal for individuals traveling to Seattle for medical care, being in close proximity to hospitals and medical research centers.

About the Owner

Formerly a 30 year resident of Alaska, I have also done extensive travel and/or living in Europe, the Middle East, and in Africa. I am, of course, anxious to travel more. I have always been very keen on outdoor activities: non technical climbing, downhill and cross country skiing, bicycling, casual hiking. I have an adventuresome spirit and always looking for the next fork in fork road

Since arriving in Seattle, I have thoroughly enjoying all of the amenities that the Pacific NW offers. I am located in the hub of what is happening in Seattle area for access to all that might be needed: coffee shops galore, bars and restaurants for the foodies...anything you could want, wonderful social life, and of course, the Seattle Art Center which has amazing exhibits. Easy bus transport ion anywhere you want to go. Plus there are all the activities related to the water of Puget Sound, Lake Union and Lake Washington. Technology and medical research facilities, Amazon are located in close proximity.

I had the great good fortune of staying at "Le Bijou" in August. True, this is Seattle at its best, but what topped the list of superlatives of my visit was lodging at this lovely cottage in Queen Anne. The cottage is so charming, the amenities all that one could ask for, the grounds beautifully kept, and the hostess an absolute delight. The location was perfect for my needs and I hope to be back soon. Thank you, Debera!!

Owner's Response: Your visit was my pleasure. Loved seeing the way mother and son interacted and how you worked together to get him settled in Seattle for the beginning of his career. It was a special opportunity for me to get to know you both. I hope you will update me on his career and be guests of Le Bijou again.

And, we were blessed even further to leave Seattle having made a wonderful friend in Debera! Thank you, Debera, for being such a beautiful hostess! We will be back and we wholeheartedly recommend this property as THE place to stay in Seattle!

Owner's Response: Richard and Kim were fabulous guests. They are ever so friendly and those Texans! We enjoyed stimulating conversation together that was most interesting in exchange of ideas. Best guests: The cottage was in perfect condition. They stripped the beds which was not necessary. Don't hesitate to have this wonderful couple as your guests.

Seattle without a cloud in the sky!!

The cottage we stayed in on Queen Anne was exceptionally clean and quiet. It is small but more than adequate for two and has a great view of Elliot Bay just a few short steps away. Careful attention to detail throughout and the bathroom is very large and beautifully remodeled. Debera is very helpful and pleasant to talk with. Enjoyable stay....

Owner's Response: Thank you for being guests at Le Bijou the review of your stay. I do hope Le Bijou will be on your shopping list the next time you visit Seattle. All the best. Oh, by the way, it turns out my granddaughter absolutely loves smoked salmon bellies and she is 2yr old. No one else gets a chance to eat them while she is around.

Quaint cottage centrally located for an amazing trip to Seattle and surrounding areas

  • 5 of 5

A trip of a lifetime started with a stay at this lovely cottage. The cottage itself is a work of art that has been amazingly restored to its original beauty. It had all of the comforts and connectivity of home but with amazing views just out your door step. The house was inviting and quite frankly, there were days when we enjoyed just relaxing at the house.

Located in the Queen Anne area, we were central to everything we wanted to do. On the corner of the street was the bus stop that took us into Seattle. The transit system in Seattle is easy to use and in no time, we were in the heart of Seattle enjoying all of the sites of the City. Additionally, the Queen Anne area is beautiful for evening walks with amazing views and a rich history. The hidden staircases throughout were a treasure to find... but be prepared to walk some hills! If you are from a flat area, the hills will really give you a workout. We were easily able to navigate a trip to the Chuiliy Museum. Space Needle, EMP museum, Pikes Market, the Aquarium, the ferris wheel and a trip around the harbor. If you are looking to do all of that, consider a Seattle Pass which allows you to get the admission at a discounted rate.

Another day we took off for a whale watching adventure. Just 30 minutes from the cottage is a port where you can take a high speed boat up to the San Juan islands in just over an hour (Puget Sound Express). We were able to find 2 pods of orcas and then later about 13 humpback whales. It was amazing. We headed up there in the morning and were back in the cottage in the late afternoon.

We also enjoyed a day of hiking Mt. Rainer. Just a short 1.5 hour trip from the cottage and we were hiking the mountain and enjoying the amazing view and trails.

The trip was amazing but it was made even better by the wonderful cottage that was not only gorgeous but centrally located, allowing us to have many different types of adventures. The owner, Debera, is amazing. She has the gift of hospitality and makes you feel incredibly welcome. She works hard to ensure that all of your needs are met and that you have all the information you need to have a great trip. In advance, she contacted us to provide us insight into the area and help with any planning that we needed. She is truly a gem and an extra bonus to the already beautiful location.

I would highly recommend staying at this lovely cottage on your next trip to Seattle or the surrounding area.

Idyllic cottage, perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fabulous stay in "Le Bijou". This is a little gem in a great neighbourhood. Debera was the perfect host. It was wonderful to have her welcome us on our arrival and to show us around the cottage. Her renovation of the space is perfect, with every attention to detail. Comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen and amazing bathroom. I especially enjoyed the renovated clawfoot bath tub, with Debera's home prepared lavender infused bath salts. A real treat at the end of a day sight seeing around Seattle. The outdoor space was a bonus and a great place to unwind with a glass of wine. Access to public transit is just around the block. The #1 bus gets you to downtown easily connecting with all the other bus routes around the city and beyond. We didn't need to use our vehicle once during the whole visit. One of the best vacation rental accommodations we have stayed in. We look forward to returning.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very thoughtful review. It was a pleasure having both of you at Le Bijou and getting to know both of you and found conversation very interesting with Douglas by the firepit. Wonderful that your first visit to Seattle was so filled with fun things to do. I look forward to your next visit with your girlfriend, Karen. Thank you for leaving Le Bijou is perfect condition.

From the Owner

I had not owned a home in 20 years because of traveling and assorted other reasons. I felt the need to put down roots somewhere the rent would not escalate...but taxes would. When I found this place at the end of 2013, it was run down, everything overgrown, little to no maintenance in years, complete renovation of everything was needed. I saw the possibilities, liked the neighborhood, the bluff and sunsets, a place to garden, a place of tranquility and LOTS of work. One year later, I am still working on it and will be for probably years to come. I like the process of dreaming the impossible and making the dream come true. I love the cottage. I will go over there when there are no quests and feel like I have gone on vacation. I thoroughly enjoy the setting on the West Bluff looking out to Puget Sound with the marine traffic coming and going. The street is tree lined and quiet, not something I experienced in lower Queen Anne. The property offered me a place to live and make a home plus this darling cottage that I have lovingly restored to its former beauty and given it my own twist of creativity. Then, the opportunity to garden again did the trick for me. I love this location as I am so close to everything mentioned before but feel like I am not in the city. I can take what I want in the city and then retreat to my little haven on Queen Anne. There is a tranquility about living here that is very special to me.

From the Owner

'Le Bijou', (The Jewel), is a separate beautiful space. It is not living in someones home, or a condo/apartment. It is 15 to 20 minutes from everything from entertainment, hospitals, research centers, technology research, universities but right in the city. Le Bijou's location is Queen Anne and on the west bluff with expansive views of Puget Sound, fabulous sunsets and sunrises is my idea of perfect. My street is quiet with great neighbors who all seem to have the doggies. It is a place of calmness and tranquility but accessible to whatever it is that pleases you. Coming home is like ....well, really coming home.
