We loved Casa Kalumina!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Casa Kalumina! It was in the perfect spot, very near to the beach access. Two surf sessions a day for our surfers and boogie boarders. Three families used this as home base. The pool was key! Room for all us to be in and out to keep cool when we had to take a break from the beach.

The kitchen was stocked with enough pots, pans, and dishes for all of us.

Shawna and Jorge took great care of us and provided us with great recommendations when needed.

We would definitely be back to Casa Kalumina if we have a big group again.

We had a good time here, but there's some room for improvement.

  • 3 of 5

Pros:

The fenced in patio is nice and having a small pool is nice as well

The area above the garage looked very relaxing though we didn’t spend much time there

Easy walking distance to several good restaurants and breakfast places

Very close to the beach, and the beach is really nice - walking down the beach and catching a ferry to Tamarindo is easy, just be sure you have a ride back or make the last ferry at night

Shawna was very nice, responded quickly and made sure we got there ok

Cons:

The bed sheets need to be replaced. Especially those in the 'in-law apartment' room. There were multiple stains, including blood, that were very visible - it was a bit off-putting. Also, the sheets were not changed during our stay though the place was cleaned twice while we were there.

We were told we'd have until 11am to checkout on the day we left; however, the gentleman that greeted us when we showed up was there at 930 re-arranging furniture, straightening up, etc. which got in our way and rushed our departure, we weren't pleased about that.

It would be nice to have more lounge chairs near the pool given the capacity of the house.

Bugs - in understand these are to be expected given where we are and that's fine; however, the first night we went to shower in the in-law bathroom, when we turned on the shower head, dozens if not hundreds of ants came streaming out of the wall where the showerhead attaches and made their way all over the shower, curtains, towels, etc. Again, I'm okay with bugs and knew where we were going…but that was a bit much for some people in our group.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, but I wouldn't stay there again. Everyone in our group agreed 3 out of 5 was about right. For the people that were saying it was better than any all-inclusive resort they've stayed in - those people are not staying in the right resorts……

Some other general comments:

The closest path to the beach is technically only for guests at the adjacent hotel. We used this path though with no issues. If you do a Catamaran tour I would advise against Anteres - or at least know what you're getting into. We were sold on a Catamaran tour that would take us to a private beach where we could snorkle, swim, SU paddleboard or relax on the beach. It was actually a sailboat where we sat on the floor of the deck on beanbags, and when we got to the private beach the only people that had SU paddleboards were two crew

A Little Bit of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

I have been to Costa Rica before and stayed in an all inclusive resort. While the resort was great, we wanted a more intimate experience on the Guanacaste Coast. My wife and another couple chose to rent Casa Kalumina located in the Palm Beach Resort on Playa Grande. Our casa was just as advertised. The patio was screened to keep out the bugs and we enjoyed king size beds along with our own bathrooms. The house could have held at least 12 but the four of us enjoyed the space and solitude of the big house. We were located no more than a hundred yards from the beach and had four restaurants within walking distance. The house had all the necessary supplies and the only problem we had was hot water in the showers. The water was warm but with the heat outside who needs a hot shower?

We took the estuary tour and saw crocodiles and howler monkeys as well as several different birds. If you choose to go on an extended tour, Shawna will hook you up. She and Jorge were wonderful and met all of our needs.

Casa Kalumina is a beautiful home away from home and one we are sure to return to.

very spacious, cold ac in bedrooms, walk to breakfast and beach

  • 5 of 5

Shawna and Jorge were great to work with. The area is great, and you can walk to nearby hotels to hang in their pools and order food, but the pool at the house is great too. You must walk to Cafe Azul for breakfast, amazing tacos/burritos. Regarding the beach, the surf and sunset are completely amazing. The beach isn't far, but it isn't right outside the door, 5-7 min walk on a dirt road. Although there are plenty of places to eat, cooking on the grill on the patio was really fun. The patio is large, and there is a dinner table there. The upstairs patio is over the garage. It has a nice breeze and great hammocks. You can fit many people at this place. 3 queens, 6 twins and a king. All of the bedrooms' air conditioning worked very well. The only down side is those are the only places with AC. The living area and 2 bathrooms in the house get very warm. It's not too bad morning and night, but the afternoon was hot. The separate room outside has it's own restroom, although tiny, it stays cool with the room. That separate room is a great escape from the heat any time of day.

notes:

Bring bottles of water.

There are plenty of pots and pans, and a blender.

Tamarindo taxis: beach taxi is a long walk for $1ea or you can make a shorter walk to Bora Bora hotel bar and have them call and be picked up there for $3ea.

Do not put the trash outside on the ground, walk it out to the cage by the street. Critters will get into it.

Owner's Response: It was so great having your group! The beach is definitely closer than mentioned though, maybe you were walking to another beach entrance? did you miss the one that is right in front of the Cafe Azul which is three properties beside the house? Hopefully you didn't walk further than needed. Hope to get you guys back down here again one day!

Superior Vacation Villa

  • 5 of 5

Casa Kalumina is the best vacation home we have ever stayed in. The kitchen is well equipped with a full sized fridge and gas stove. The AC in every bedroom works! The pool is perfect for cooling off after heating up on the playa which is a pleasant 5 minute walk. The outdoor screened in deck with a gas BBQ is a bonus. It's clean, comfortable and spacious. Loads of room for the eight of us. Lots of markets and restaurants close by.

Christmas Getaway (2nd visit to Casa Kalumina)

  • 5 of 5

Second time here at this wonderful house. Previously visited in January 2010 and like the area so much, came back for Christmas 2016. Shawna & Jorge both were very helpful and made every effort to make is feel at home (as did Alyssa did in 2010). Beach is very close and the corner store around the corner is now a Wilmart grocery. The home is perfectly suited for large families. While there we did a sunset sail out of Playa Flamingo and some of the party went on a canopy tour. Mostly we just enjoyed the beach and the head high waves that we just love in the area. We especially love the outdoor kitchen and entertaining space it offers. We had other family staying also in Palm Beach Estates which was convenient for all to visit.

We ate Christmas dinner at the Hotel Bula Bula and several other times visited Hotel Cantarana for their Tapas Thursday and breakfast. Prices there were very reasonable and food excellent. This area has so very much to offer everyone from adventure to just relaxing. Highly recommend this house for groups of 8 or more.
