Great Beach House

  • 5 of 5

We were 2 couples and 2 young kids. Had a great week in Playa Grande. Shawna and Jorge were extremely helpful. The house was beautiful and well-equipped. Only wish that there were some beach chairs and a portable umbrella for Playa Grande as there are no shady spots on the beach. Water taxi to town was convenient, however the last taxi is at 5 p.m. so if you either drive or take a taxi if you want to go into Tamarindo in the evening. Other amazing were beaches within a short drive. All in all, exactly what we were looking for.

Christmas at Playa Grande..great vacations!

  • 5 of 5

Loved the house so close to the beach and large enough for a family of 7. Very nice small pool, beautiful garden and we spent a lot of time under the rooftop patio. We had a great family vacations under beautiful sunny weather

Would replace the broken surf board and would refresh some items around the house but it is Ok for vacations.

Nice cafe close to the beach with delicious homemade tacos. For food shopping, you can go to the super mercado close to the house (more expensive) but if you have a car, go to Tamarindo, Auto Mercado.

A bit disappointed that there is no more information on the protection and observation of the leatherback turtles that come to nest during that period on the beach: increasing tourim and new houses scare them away..more could be done to protect them.

Thanks to Alyssa for all her help and advises that made our vacations more enjoyable.

Would love to come back

Perfect, fantastic beach house,

  • 5 of 5

Casa Kalumina is a place of unexpected adventures and luxurious silences, of being greeted by name the second time you stop for breakfast at the surf school down the street, and enjoying vegetarian pizza while listening to a live jazz/reggae trio a five-minute stroll from the front door – under a cloudless canopy of a billion stars. If I sound a little over enthusiastic, trust me, I haven't scratched the surface.

We stayed with two other couples and a single friend and each had spacious, private accommodations. It seemed twice as many would be an easy fit with a little communal spirit.

A gorgeous, lush garden ensures absolute privacy. The house is thoughtfully laid out with well-appointed kitchen, bathrooms, and spacious common areas including a breezy covered deck with a seductive hammock secreted over the garage. The beds are comfortable and the furnishings tasteful but practical. Friendly and unobtrusive folks tend to the pool and grounds so everything is always groomed and inviting.

There was never a bit of trash on the huge beach unless you count the thousands of seashells. There were very few other people on the beach. I never noticed any biting insects. About a half-hour walk up the beach is a turtle museum, a yoga studio, and a nice bar/restaurant with fine, spicy Bloody Marys.

Casa Kalumina is a treasure; enjoy it. You will not want to leave. Pura Vida. Pure life!

Lovely House Great location

  • 5 of 5

On my 3rd trip to Playa Grande, my friend and I (60 something women) took our 9 twenty-something kids for a weeklong break from the cold Northeast Everybody loved Casa Kalumina. Elisa, the rental agent, is local and was there to help us activate the wireless internet and assist with any need. The house is close to the beach, local market and restaurants as well as the water taxi to Tamarindo. We are booking for next year already

Wonderful Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful vacation in April 2010. My husband and I, plus 3 kids, stayed in the main home, and my mother got her own cabana right next door. We met the house manager (a Minneapolis/NYC transplant) in the city of Playa Grande (an easy drive from Liberia Airport) and she led us to the home. She made sure we had everything we needed, was easily reachable by phone, and helped us set up some tours. The home is in a great location. You can walk to a number of restaurants and, of course, the beach. You can drive to Tamarindo or walk down to the beach where a number of boats will take you over for a few dollars. The hammocks, pool and indoor/outdoor living made for a very relaxing stay. Boogie boards at the house kept our kids entertained for hours on the ocean. At night the air conditioners in each bedroom helped cool things off for a great night sleep.

The pictures are accurate. Highly recommend breakfast at Hotel Bula Bula, dinner at nearby restaurant owned by Germans (name escapes me, but just a few doors down), zip lining, and watching the sunset every evening over the ocean. If you want an urban setting with numerous night clubs and restaurants go to Tamarindo, but if you want to relax - come to Playa Grande.
