A modern but cosy, romantic 5* retreat in a quiet village location.
About Rachel Holcroft
I am Rachel and the owner of The Old Roller Shed. I have grown up in this beautiful and historic village. The village has changed a lot since and is such a great place to live and visit. I hope you will love it too!
Why Rachel Holcroft chose Cartmel
When I was a girl, we knew the building on The Causeway as the council depot. Cumbria County Council used it to store the Council wagon, and more memorably, the snow plough. Previously it had housed the Steam Roller. In the UK, a number of companies owned fleets of steam rollers and contracted them out to local authorities. Many were still in use into the 1960s and a few were still being used for road maintenance in the early 1970s. Unfortunately I have been unable to find much information about our Roller Shed but by the early 80’s the Steam Roller had ceased operations. My husband and I were lucky enough to purchase the “Shed” in 2010 with all the intentions of using it for storage but as the building started to decay, we decided we had to bring it back to life! I hope you will agree that a unique and modern transformation has taken place whilst retaining the charm of the old building. Welcome to The Old Roller Shed!
What makes this House unique
The Old Roller Shed is such a beautiful space. I have tried to keep it all quite modern and light so you can appreciate this unusual building but still find it quite cosy for those romantic nights away from home.

Great location, high spec, modern conversion.
We had a great stay at the shed. Rachael was there to greet us as we arrived and had provided me will all the info I required for the stay. The shed is in a great location and is nice and peaceful at night. It is literally 50m to the corner shop. Everything in the shed is high spec and has a great modern decor. There are plenty of windows to let fresh air in and thermal controlled underfloor heating. Even remote control blinds.
Deserving of its 5 star rating..
As a couple we had a very enjoyable stay at The shed and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a bit of piece and quiet in a luxury accommodation. The quality of the fittings and furnishings is outstanding and every aspect has been thought through to make the stay enjoyable. The place is so nice people passing just cant help but admire it whilst walking by.
The local area is very accessible either on foot to local pubs/restaurants and shops or by car to the lakes for walks/cycling.The Shed is high on our list as a place to return and we will certainly be booking again in the future.
Modern little gem in a charming village
Ideal romantic getaway for two in a peaceful and quaint village. The attention to detail in converting, furnishing and equipping the property is second to none. The welcome pack after a long drive was very thoughtful. It really did feel like a home away from home and we were sad to leave.
Thanks Sandra for the fab review. Come back soon! Rachel x
The property was perfect. Spotlessly clean, beautiful luxurious decor, comfortable bed, Elemis bath products, rain forest shower and a very exclusive and very welcome 'welcome pack'. Fantastic views and ideally positioned near the village and the pubs. Rachel was there when we arrived and was extremely helpful.
A well deserved 5 star stay - thank .
Thanks so much Liz! Loved having you as my guests. See you again soon. Rachel
This is an ideal location within easy walking distance of all the shops and pubs yet very quiet and peaceful. The roller shed is not huge but has everything you need with bags of style. The flexibility and hands on approach of the owner gives this place an advantage over other self catering options.
Thanks Clare for a fab review! Hope to see you again soon. Rachel
Highly recommend... wonderful place to stay especially after a 6 and half hour drive. Beautiful designed ....could want for nothing. Lovely village - and was a wonderful haven to go back to as it did rain most of the time we were there. We walked to L'Enclume... would definitely go back
Only 5 miles from the Southern end of Lake Windermere and 20 minutes from the M6 motorway giving perfect access to the Lake District National Park.
