4 bed, 3 bath, villa just outside the medieval village of St Llorenc de la Muga
- english, spanish, catalan
I'm English but have lived in St Lorenc de la Muga for 16 years with my 4 kids and numerous rescued cats and dogs. I have found learning Catalan very difficult, I can get by but I envy my kids who are all fluent in English, Spanish and Catalan! I love living here for the peace & quiet, the beautiful scenery & of course the weather! I spend a lot of time in the summer swimming in the river. I also go horse riding and do a lot of walking. My kids also enjoy mountain biking as well as skiing in the winter. Life here is very different to the UK, everything is so much more relaxed. It is nice to be away from the tourist areas but still near enough to some great beaches & the shops. I enjoy meeting everyone who holidays in the villa and live 2 minutes away so am always on hand if needed.
Lara purchased this Villa in 2005
Why Lara chose Sant Llorenç de la Muga
The house was built with plans to sell but due to the recession that didn't happen and it was rented out instead. My brother moved to Spain 2 years before me & after visiting him I fell in love with the area & came too. I love living in such a beautiful peaceful place & being part of a small village community. Throughout the winter months it is very quite but in summer & during Fiestas we have a lot of tourists & the whole place is much busier. It's nice to see the village "wake up" & nice to meet different people but it's also nice when the tourists leave & peace returns. I wouldn't want to live on the coast as it's too "touristy" for me but it is very nice to live near enough to have days at the beach, especially in Spring & Autumn. I also like being close to the ski resorts.
What makes this Villa unique
The property is spacious, has fantastic views & is in a quiet location. The village with its shop bars & restaurants is a short stroll & the coast a short drive away. There are lovely walks in the hills around the villa & along the river. July and August are hot, perfect for a relaxing holiday lazing by the pool or swimming in the river. Many of my guests come again during the quieter out of season months as the weather is not so hot & you get more of a chance to experience the "real" Catalonia. It is also better to come out of season if you want to explore the area either by car (the roads are quieter)or by foot (it really is too hot to walk in July and August.) I have a couple of groups of motor bikers who come every spring along with their bikes and use the villa as a base from which to explore the mountains. Horse riding can be arranged at a local stables from where you can enjoy a peaceful hack out into the countryside. Mountain bikes can be hired in the next village. I can also babysit if required. The ski slopes are just 90 minutes by car.

Fabulous villa in a stunning location
This is an immaculate, modern, well equipped villa in a stunning rural location surrounded by beautiful scenery.
The villa was more than big enough for our party of 9 and the kitchen definately has the "wow!" factor. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, and the bathrooms are fabulous. The games room provided extra entertainment for the kids as did the play area just down the road.
Lovely pool and terrace area-constructed to provide shade at the hottest part of the day-and plenty of seats.
St Llorence its self is a very pretty walled village with several good restaraunts-just a short walk along the river.
Lara and Chris were on hand when ever we needed advice about places to visit or where to eat, and definately helped us to get the most out of our stay.
We will definately be back!
A great place for a Holiday .....
This villa was a real find. It was for us the perfect place to unite two families for a holiday. The villa is in a lovely location surrounded by mountains but only a short flat walk from the ancient village of St Lorenc de la Muga with its portcullis and narrow windy streets.
The villa itself was finished to a very high standard and offered us the flexible accommodation we needed. All the bedrooms were a good size and the living accommodation light and spacious with great views. There was a large, very well fitted kitchen which opened up onto the terrace and lovely pool area and a large sitting/dining room with sufficient seating for all of us.
The owners Chris and Lara were extremely welcoming and made sure we had every comfort at our disposal. The accommodation was spotless as was the pool which Chris regularly checked for our comfort.
The pretty village of St Lorenc is a nice place to walk to in the evenings. It has a couple of small but nice restaurants and a large terraced area and bar which looks over the village square where the children play in the evenings. There is also a small shop that sells all the necessities.
For walkers and those seeking peace and tranquillity this is a wonderful spot where the air is clean and the scenery stunning. We wanted relaxation mixed with a bit of culture and we found that Figueres, about 20 minutes away by car, offered us the Dali Museum and a host of other interesting places to visit.
I would definitely recommend this villa and our hosts who could not have been more charming. We are hoping to return next year.
Best holiday home we have ever had.
The house is great, the photos are a true representation. The village is really quaint & the countryside & scenery spectacular.
If you are looking for a tranquil holiday home with the option of getting a buzz not too far away, choose this.
You will need a car as the bus service is minimal.
We liked the owners too who live here so are aware of all the best places to go to.
If you want all night discos this is not the place for you, although you can get them on the coast, which is not far away.
