About Joanne Basford
We are Tim and Joanne and we bought this house in France in 2013 when it was a basically derelict. Even then we knew it was a special house and we immediately fell in love with its surroundings, the view and the warm feel of the house. Since 2013 we have been renovating the house and we've put our heart and soul into this house. As a result we're fairly confident that we haven't overlooked anything - we've even put in international power sockets that accept English, French and US plugs without the need for an adapter!! Whilst we’ve been renovating, we’ve still trying to get out and see as much of the area as we can. From the immediate vineyards surrounding our house to the broader area - we spend our days when we're in France wine-tasting, visiting historical monuments and trying the great food. We've spent a lot of time here now and we're never bored - I'm sure you won't be either. This house is a happy, peaceful and relaxing place to be.

Why Joanne Basford chose Arbis
There are many reasons to want to stay in our house. Firstly, it is beautiful. We've kept many of the original stone features, the wine cellar and the large open fireplaces. But we've added all of the modern conveniences and high-tech gadgets anyone would want on holiday. It's also a big house meaning that it can hold a lot of people without feeling like you are falling over each other. We've put an ensuite bathroom in every bedroom so that you don't have to stand in a line and everyone has some privacy. Secondly - its a relaxing place to be. The surrounding countryside is simply stunning and its very peaceful. Lastly - location. This house is situated in the midst of the main attractions of the Bordeaux area - and there is always something going on in the area.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The history of this house is quite unique. Originally part of the Chateau de Benauge estate, this house was the Chateau's wine chai and dates back to the 13th century. The Chateau itself was once owned by King Henry II of England and his wife Eleanor and Aquitaine and there are still remnants from the battles for the Chateau in our garden.

The house with everything
We have a group of between ten and fourteen friends from Canada, Sweden and Australia who have met up every two years for the last fourteen at a suitable place in either France, Italy or Spain. We have stayed in all manner of accommodation from converted farms to chateaux. We all rated this property as equal or better than any of the others. There is literally nothing of any importance forgotten here. The house and surrounding countryside are superb. It took us a little while to come to grips with the high tech electronics but perhaps this has more to do with our seniority than anything else.
Have rented numerous vacation properties and this was by far the best to date. The house is absolutely beautiful, impeccably clean, with every modern convenience you would want and all details taken care of. We were 9 adults and had more than ample room to gather in the evening and cook meals. We particularly enjoyed the private bedrooms with very comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms. Both the owner and housekeeper were a real pleasure to deal with and went out of their way to ensure we were well taken care of. Excellent amount of information provided both before and during our stay - on the house, things to do and surrounding areas - including grocery stores, restaurants, wineries, etc. A simply wonderful experience in every aspect and highly recommend this property.
A fantastic setting
We were a party of 12 extended family members (6 couples aged from 17 to 82). The setting was perfect for us. 250 yards from the nearest property, the gorgeous Chateau de Benauge, set in a natural valley. The nearest village, Cadillac (about a 7-8 minute car ride) has good range of small grocery shops and a good range of restaurants. We particularly like Les Remparts. The neighbouring village of Beguey has a large supermarket with all you could want and thats still only 10-12 minutes from the house. To be honest though we mostly had evening meals in as the kitchen facilities are very good. The property itself has 6 good size bedrooms, each with a shower and/or bathroom, plus an extra pair of beds on an elevated area. The house is well appointed with plenty of space. The pool is a good size and there was enough garden for a few ball games. I would definitely recommend this house if you like to be away from 'hustle and bustle', you want plenty of space and being in the country. We had a great time here.
Relaxing holiday in stunning countryside
We had a lovely stay. The house had everything you could want. The weather was amazing and everybody loved the pool. We had great excitement on our first morning there as we saw a convoy of about 40 Citroen CVs, all obviously out for a drive. There was lots of horn blowing and it was a wonderful spectacle from the garden. Where else but France would you see such a lovely sight.
Patricia the housekeeper was a delight and we managed to communicate even though our French was very basic. She arranged a lovely afternoon wine tasting at Chateau Fayau.
The house was so spacious there was always somewhere you could go and quietly read a book if that was what you wanted. The property is finished to such a high standard, I think it is the first house we have visited where everyone said the showers were better (more pressure) than at home.
My only (incredibly minor) constructive criticism is that we would have liked to have a few more trays to make ice in, as when you have such glorious weather you get through a lot of ice, but we got around that by buying bags at the supermarket.
Thank you for a lovely holiday in a beautiful house.
Stunning location and fab restoration
Property is very well designed but highly practical and although a little remote from the nearest town it's only 10 minutes in the car. Owners very helpful and plenty of restaurants in the area, though cooking facilities are superb if you like trying your hand at local produce. Easy day trips to the wine towns and Bordeaux, and direct U.K. Flights to Bordeaux. We drove which was a great trip. Can't wait to go back with the family
