About Donna Cohen
Michael and I have been married for 29 years and have lived in France for the last 5 years. We run a photographic and floor plan company called La Huppe Photos et Plans where our clients include gite/chateaux/holiday home owners and people selling their property. We fell in love with Calfour’s views and sunsets, privacy and rural setting with plenty of space inside and out. We spent some time renovating Calfour, and also having lived here during this time we have ensured that our villa has all the necessities you would need for a fabulous holiday home. The property is south facing and enjoys sun all day until you watch it set often with spectacular sunsets in the West.
Donna Cohen purchased this Villa in 2015
Why Donna Cohen chose Serres-et-Montguyard
When we first arrived in France I used to take the dog for a walk on this land when the house was sadly derelict. Sitting up high and overlooking the valley, I would just sit and watch as the sun set. We fell in love with the elevated position of this property and its vast expanse of sky. Calfour is a very spacious property, full of character with ancient, thick beams & flag stone floors. In winter the large open fireplace keeps you cosy, whilst in summer the outside shaded and decked area with its comfy furniture, provides a tranquil place to relax in the shade, but still be next to the pool with its panoramic views. Renovated, Calfour now provides comfortable living for 8 or 9 people / 2 families or an extended family in 3 very large bedrooms and a smaller twin bedroom, with 2 adult single beds. We also have 2 cots and lots of bedding and baby stuff. As a long house, the lounge area & 3 bedrooms all face the view and pool, as per the photographs, whilst the main bedroom looks out onto the covered terrace & meadow beyond, where one can sit & watch for deer in the early morning sun. This ancient old farmhouse has solid metre thick walls that along with the shutters keep the property cool in the summer when temperatures top 40 degrees. In France the shutters are closed during the day to prevent the sun warming the house. This has worked so well for centuries you will find that stone houses here do not use or need air conditioning, although we do provide fans for all rooms as well. In our private, unspoiled setting we often spot wildlife in the fields, including the elusive and shy wild boar. We have seen them many times and the size of a male wandering across the road is a site to behold. This is not the norm, but you might be lucky enough to see one. We have 11 hectares for you to roam about. Although rural, quiet and private, we enjoy the beautiful bastide town of Eymet on our doorstep with its multitude of restaurants, architecture and markets.
What makes this Villa unique
It is not often that you find a large gite with 11 hectares of unspolit rural highland with Scots pine & juniper with its own nature trails, that is still close to a thriving & beautiful bastide town of Eymet. Which contrary to public opinion is very French indeed. Expats only make up 18 percent of the population. Very French with English familiarity and friendly locals. An excellent place to practice your French in a friendly environment. We have many excellent restaurants suited to different budgets in our area, and the night life is excellent in summer. We sit in the middle of many landmark bastide towns, churches & chateaux, including the quaint village of Issigeac and its famous Sunday morning market. Monflanquin, Villeneuve, Bergerac, Perigueux and Agen are worth a visit along with the famous vineyards St Emillion and Monbazillac. The highest sand dunes in Europe can be found at Arcachon and Bordeaux the capital of Nouvelle Aquitaine is also well worth a day trip. Plenty to do and see. Or sit, swim and enjoy Calfour and our long, hot summers. When you have finished with the town and village entertainment that SW France has to offer in the summer you can come home to a gite renovated to a high standard, spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet. This large family house is more than a gite and you will find we have provided you with many extras as this is also our home. You will find so much more than just a gite with basic comforts. Upon your arrival we will meet you to show you the essentials. We leave you a welcome pack on arrival contains baguettes, butter, pate, milk, cheeses, a bottle of red local wine and rosé local wine and a large pack of crisps. Even if you arrive at midnight after a long drive, we try & make life a little easier for you, with no charge of course. We also start you off with loo roll, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid & hand soap etc. Along with clean cloths, t towels etc. This is your holiday, we make it easy to start relaxing.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Great property, great facilities, great location, great support from owners if needed, great holiday!
Great Relaxing Location
We (Family of 5 with three kids between 11 and 15) stayed here for a week to relax after a week of activities in the Ardeche. A fabulous Gite, perfect to relax with lots of great restaurants nearby in Eymet. Donna & Michael were excellent hosts who made us feel incredibly welcome. Would not hesitate to recommend a stay here.
Lovely family holiday at Calfour
We've had a great stay at Calfour in June 2019. It is a lovely property. Very clean, well equipped with everything you need. They provided cot, highchair, baby toys etc. We all enjoyed the pool table and bar area. The decking area was ideal for relaxing and dining.
Donna and Michael were very welcoming and helpful. They responded very quickly to any query. Thank you, it was a lovely family holiday.
Thank you for your kind comments family C. You left it spotless and were a pleasure.
Amazing, totally relaxing family holiday! Perfect in every way!
We have just come home from a wonderful week! The Gite is perfect and well equipped for a large family!
The owners were fab and made us feel so welcome, nothing was too much trouble! Even bought round some baby toys for our 2 little boys. Definitely recommend if you want a totally relaxed, child friendly holiday! Our favourite thing to do was eat outside on the decking, watching the sunset with the beautiful views whilst the children played or were in bed. It topped it off that we had sunshine and blue skies all week.
Hi Jaye and your happy family,
Firstly, thank you for leaving the gite immaculate, truly immaculate. We loved meeting you and your great family and friends and were very pleased you enjoyed all of the sunshine this September. It's been a season of little ones and their extended families. It's what this gite was made for. We loved it. Thank you all XX
Tranquil, picturesque and family friendly!
We came to stay at Calfour towards the end of August. We chose to drive from England with our two boys under two years old. This was our first family holiday so we weren't quite sure how it would turn out but we couldn't have had it made any easier for us with Donna and Michael's accommodating, friendly and welcoming nature. We arrived slightly early but they had both ensured that the gite was ready for us and had made the children's beds up first so that, if we needed to, they could be laid straight down. The gite was clean, well-maintained and provided everything we needed which we thought was amazing considering we needed cots, sterilisers, bouncers and all other baby related items! They were also all in a very clean and excellent working condition. There were several towels and sheets provided and Donna even sent more freshly washed and ironed sheets half way through our stay which was most thoughtful!
We were desperate for some relaxing family time together and we got just that in the two weeks we stayed. We mainly stayed at Calfour as it met all our requirements although we did venture to a few local markets (Eymet and Issigeac) and restaurants which were great! The markets had a fantastic vibe and were selling a range of things including fresh seafood, cheese, bread and pottery. We also went to some local vineyards (Lestervenie and Eyssards.) We ended up having our own private tasting at Lestervenie and would highly recommend this for those who enjoy a glass or two!
The filter on our pool was regularly changed and Donna and Michael were only too happy to help with anything else.
We genuinely had the most memorable and enjoyable time staying here and would recommend to anyone. We also had our parents come to join us for part of our stay. They flew over and found the journey incredibly quick and easy.
We are returning next year, with parents again and cannot wait to get back. This place certainly has a special place in our hearts! Thank you Donna and Michael for having us in your lovely home and for making it so special.
Hi Jasmine and Tom,
thank you for such lovely comments. You and your little family were superb guests and we look forward to seeing you next year.
My family and I had a fantastic two weeks at this property. Donna and Michael were the perfect hosts, very friendly and approachable, and we're on hand to quickly resolve any queries and make recommendations. The location was perfect for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. We were very grateful for the welcome goodies!! Our boys 11 and 8, really enjoyed the pool and pool table and had plenty of space to play football, frisbee and generally make lots of noise! The house was spotlessly clean, spacious, comfortable and well equipped with everything you would need. Some lovely photographs on the walls taken by the owner, Donna. Nice selection of games, books and dvd's, although we spent most of our time outside, as we had great weather during our stay. The gardens and grounds around the house are vast, and we enjoyed early morning jogs around the fields!! We enjoyed the night market at Eymet and the large market in St Foy la Grande on the Sat. We would also recommend visiting Sarlat and Monpazier. We love this area and will definitely stay in this house when we come next time! Thanks again Donna and Michael for letting us use your lovely house!
Thank you Chris and Susan. It was a delight to meet you both, your boys and your family and we look forward to your return. Thank you again for leaving the gite immaculate. Donna and Michael.
Calfour is far enough away from neighbours to be private and just minutes from the Bastide town of Eymet with its many restaurants, night markets, vide greniers, marche gourmands & other summer activities. Out of season you have the whole of the Dordogne to yourselves. Village hopping is a must for tourists and locals alike during the light, balmy nights of summer. Many villages will host their own night markets with music, craft and lots of food stalls, ideal for tasting local delicacies.
Come, sit & enjoy French cafe culture, in the sun with a glass of wine or espresso or both & watch the world go by. Pure relaxation.
We also have wine tasting tours, vineyard visits and there are many family friendly activities including fairy tale chateaux visits with children's activities. We have a company that hires bikes, delivering them to the house for less hassle.
Within 40 minutes drive are villages and towns such as Bergerac, Montflanquin, Issigeac, St Emillion, Monteton, Villereal, Castillonnes, all worth a visit and only 1 and a half hours away are Perigeaux, Bordeaux and our personal favourite, Bassin d’arcachon with the largest sand dune in Europe; the Dune du Pilat. A trek up to the top, but worth the effort to enjoy the amazing views over the oyster beds.
As this property sits within its own 30 acres we have provided paths and a Nature trail for guest and especially children to enjoy. There are many birds and wildlife that live here, including wild boar, deer, hare and rabbits.
We feel that we have the best of both worlds, the entertainment and restaurants close at hand and the peace and quiet around the pool.
