Why Scott Katz chose Kalkaska

This is a real full log home built in the fashion of a turn of the century cottage but constructed in 2004. Huge log trusses, real stone foundation, knotty pine interior throughout and real cast iron bathtub. The kitchen is fully modern with full size refrigerator, gas stove/oven, built in microwave, and real soap stone counter. It also features a Jotul cast iron wood stove, free firewood for your campfire, and use of our Old Town Stillwater canoe and 2 kayaks...paddles and life jackets included. The lake drop off is gradual and their is a shallow water 60' dock. Also really nice is the stacker washer and gas dryer.

What makes this house unique

Full log and stone construction

28' covered cedar porch with knotty pine ceiling steps from the water with direct west sunset views

Use of canoe and kayak

Firepit and free firewood next to water with Adirondak chairs

Beautiful turn on the century porch swing looking out over water and sunsets and comfy wicker chairs on porch.

Cast iron claw foot tub

Way beyond our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

The description of the cabin does not do it full justice; it sits only feet away from beautiful Manistee Lake facing west so in addition to the lake view, you'll get to see the beautiful sunsets as well! We didn't know this lake allowed motor boats so we didn't bring ours, but we did enjoy the canoe and two kayaks that were provided. We also enjoyed fishing off the dock and floating in the water on our inflatables. Nicely furnished and plenty of room for 6. Can't wait until we have another opportunity to stay here! The only minor drawback is that there is only a tub for bathing, no shower, so a stay of more than a few days may be a little inconvenient for those who prefer showers.

Beautiful, quiet, and relaxing!!!

  • 4 of 5

We were lucky enough to be able to book this cabin at the last minute as part of a trip to Traverse City. We hadn't seen Manistee Lake before, and were not disappointed. Getting there was slightly difficult, as the GPS location on Google Maps had the cabin on the West side of the lake, and because there was construction on the main road from getting from one side of the lake to the other, we had a bumpy detour to get to the property. That would have been nice to know before our departure.

The cabin slept my family of 6 quite comfortably. The cabin was in great shape and everything felt very new. The lake was warm and quiet. I advise you to bring a boat with you because its perfect for fishing, waterskiing, etc.

I had to give it a 4 instead of 5-star for 2 reasons: 1) The lack of a shower, with a party of 6, was fairly annoying. 2) The fans provided are very small and, although it wasn't terribly hot when we were there, it was still slightly uncomfortable to sleep. I would not recommend staying if this could impact you.

Overall it was an amazing few days of relaxing, splashing, kayaking, and enjoying being unplugged with the family. I would definitely stay here again.
