You finally found your perfect get-away cabin in the woods for your family. As you pull up to the cabin you can relax and breathe in the pine fresh Northern Michigan air as the breeze off the Bay makes the white caps dance on the sunny waves as they roll up the beach and retreat again. You can sit in the sand and listen and watch them all afternoon. Your dog will have endless woods for sniffing around in! Your kids will collect kindling for the fireplace or the beach fire pit, dig in the sand making castles, try to catch minnows, build fires, and find Petoskey stones. Your husband will push off the beach in the aluminum row boat and you can watch him perform like he is on a sculling team. If he is a fisherman, tell him to bring his gear and catch some bass or white fish or trout. Right out front at the drop off, there is a sunken shipwreck where divers and fishermen know the fish are gathering there too. If your kids have never rowed a boat, they will master the art while you watch them dip and pull themselves in circles of confusion at first while the waves keep returning them to the shore. There are life jackets of all sizes for everyone except the dog. Dogs love to swim in the Bay. The Sayler Park is a close walk from the beach where your children will find a Merry go round, swings, jungle gym, and picnic shelters as well as a public restroom. If you brought your bikes, that's the place to ride the curvy road round and round. Talk a beach walk to the South and see where the Yuba Creek empties into the Bay. Go behind the cabin in the woods to see the Yuba Creek and find the fish hiding along the banks or pick some water cress. You can walk the beach either direction to see the summer cottages. If you want a deserted beach, go one mile North on US 31 and park at Maple Bay, a Nature Preserve, then walk the woods path down to the Bay and you will be on 2000 front feet of pure nature and desolate beach as it was for the cows on that dairy farm that never sold to development and is now preserved for it's natural beauty. From there you can walk North to Petobego Pond where the kite surfers gather to catch the wind and look like butterflies in the sky dipping and diving and soaring and chasing each other. That point marks a sand bar where boaters gather on week ends from Elk Rapids and the Peninsula to park on the sandbar and let their kids jump off and play in the knee deep waters. You can walk out on it too, go to the edge where the light sand color changes to deepest blue to mark the drop off line. After a day in the sun, you may enjoy a beach fire where you can lie back and watch stars more brilliant than you have ever seen them, count the shooting stars, make a wish. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights. Have you ever slept on a beach? Bring your sleeping bag, I have plenty of firewood, and the sound of the waves will be real all night! Watch a pink orange dawn explode over the pine trees, take a chilling morning dip, then head inside to the hot shower. This is nothing like a normal motel vacation! Go check out Traverse City and the shops, the downtown is vibrant. Check the boats in the marina's, especially the Elk Rapids Marina 5 miles to the North, read their names, pick your favorite. Check out the charter fishing service there, go way out and catch a salmon to grill on the deck. Take the family to the famous Sleeping Bear Dune National Lake Shore 45 minute drive away. Climb the dunes, walk along Lake Michigan, see the Maritime Museum and visit Cherry Republic for all the free taste sampling you can eat in Glen Arbor. 2 miles from the cabin is the Rennie Orchard where you can take the kids to pick cherries right from the trees with their bucket strapped to their chest on a harness----perfect Kodak moment for that Christmas Card. Or take them into the sunflower fields while they are full and heavy headed to frame a picture with the family, what a back drop! The Cherry Festival follows the 4th of July and there are endless family fun events to enjoy, especially the parades and the Blue Angels roaring up the skis. Visit the many wineries out on the Old Mission Peninsula directly across from the cabin or go tasting at some of the many new breweries popping up all over. You may want to take in some concert or event at the National Music Camp called Interlocken where gifted students from all over the world live at the summer camp perfecting their art. It is 45 minutes away from the cabin. There are many hiking and biking trails around the area. Whatever you enjoy doing, you will find it around the Traverse City area. Vacationers keep coming back for favorite or new adventures. Then they get to the cabin with a list of things to see and places to go, like Mackinaw Island, Casinos, or a water park, but always end up sitting on the deck or the beach and realizing they don't want to be anywhere else doing anything but enjoying the best place they ever found to experience total relaxation!

Quiet getaway- perfect family retreat

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location and the layout of this property. Steps away from a private beach, it was just the right fit for our family of four. The cabin is beautiful and well maintained. Our kids (4 and 8) loved the loft and had no problem navigating the spiral stairs leading up to the loft. Having the beach right out the back door made it very easy to keep an eye on the kids. The owner has provided thoughtful amenities for a weeklong stay, and is very responsive if you have questions. The property is just a short walk from a public park if you need to stretch your legs. We hope to make this trip an annual tradition.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you had a memorial vacation on my beach! Next summer I plan to "plant" some Petoskey Stones along the shoreline for your son, the rock hound, to "find"!! To think of all the years my kids collected them, buckets full, because of the fascinating history 350 million years ago when the Devonian seas covered Michigan and this one celled 6-sided animal skeleton was petrified into the sand, living in colonies of coral but died out. We saved them like rare diamonds, but for what?! Now I know, for that same thrill to live in your son! I can't wait till he comes back.

Beautiful cabin just feet away from the beach!

  • 5 of 5

Nice quiet area on the east bay. The cabin is spacious and has everything you need. Location is wonderful--centrally located between Traverse City, Elk Rapids and Williamsburg. But you might not want to leave the cabin. Cable, wifi, DVD with a huge collection of movies. The deck overlooks the beach and most nights that's where we ate dinner. Fire pit on the beach or fireplace in the cabin for roasting marshmallows. There's a park within walking distance with a couple playgrounds too. We also watched all the sunsets through the beautiful A frame windows from the cabin or on the deck.

My family loves this place. We consider it our home away from home!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much! No wonder you consider it 'your home away from home'---you have been returning for years! It's like going back to your old bedroom after you have moved away from home, right? Even the air and smell of the pines puts you in an "Ahhh moment". Something incredible about sleeping in an authentic log cabin built in 1938!!

Our third year here

  • 5 of 5

Three years in a row our family (my husband and I, our daughter and son- in-law and grandson, age 4 this year) have stayed at this dream cottage. The inside of the cottage retains the exposed original log cabin features. There is a two-story story stone fireplace in the living room extending into the sleeping loft. The side of the cottage facing the lake is all windows, some of them also extending to the second story such that the lake can also be seen from the loft. Even though this year was a very warm week, we were never hot inside or outside due to the breeze. The woods surround the cottage on three sides, shading and keeping the cottage cool and giving more places to walk and experience being away from city and traffic. The lake side opens onto a lovely large deck with just a few steps leading to the private sandy beach. The gentle sound of the waves is always audible, inside and out. We gathered at the table outside for all meals and occasionally for playing games. Almost all waking time was spent outside playing on the beautiful beach, swimming in the nicely extended shallow water, or venturing out in the kayaks or rowboat to explore. In the evenings we lit a fire in the fire pit on the beach and played music, toasted marshmallows, and every single night watched the amazing sunset. That sunset is so beautiful that every year I have taken tons of pictures and even videos of it. Even after the sun disappears there is a beautiful light on the beach and gorgeous and unusual cloud formations above. The inside of the cottage is coziness personified, with the exposed logs, comfortable seating and solid wood antique furniture, even in the kitchen. All the beds are very comfortable and the rustic bathroom includes a beautiful and large rustic tiled shower. Every year it gets harder to leave this place! Going there feels like we are leaving the planet and everyday life behind. Yet it feels like it is our home when we are there. Home now less than a week, I am still missing it.

Owner's Response: It's a pleasure to add your family to my growing list of regulars who return each summer----some for 25 years now! Even their dogs feel 'at home' there. Your July week will be waiting for you next summer. I feel so happy to share this special place with you, knowing how much you appreciate it also! Thanks for finding your 'dream vacation' on my private beach!

Nice relaxing weekend

  • 4 of 5

Overall a nice property. We loved the private little beach and had a beach fire in the pit about every night. It was also nice to take an evening stroll on the calm waters with the canoe. The only complaints I have is that the WI-FI wasn't working during our stay and the property description states 3 bedrooms. There is actually only one bedroom and an open loft up stairs that has several queen beds. The caused us some problems getting the young ones down for naps as the loft has floor to ceiling windows that was impossible to block the sun light. Also the circular loft stairs are kind of dangerous when trying to carry a baby up and down them. Overall it was a nice little vaca though. I talked to the owner several times on the phone and she was really nice and helpful. I would definitely rent this property again in several years when the young ones are a bit older.

My Dream Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This original 1930's log cabin on the shore of Traverse Bay (to the north, away from city lights and boat and car traffic)was everything I had wished for. By the end of the second day, I asked the owner, Debbie, to put us down for the same week next year. The online description is accurate, but still did not prepare me for the perfection of the place. Clean, well maintained and charming. Debbie is friendly, attentive, and always ready to make the stay even nicer. The property is large, with the house placed close to the water. Surrounded by woods and bounded by a large park, there is plenty of room for hiking, bicycling, and other adventures. My daughter was interested in exploring the area by car, and she drove often to Traverse City (10 min.), the peninsula in the middle of the bay (which she said reminded her of Italy, and to Sleeping Bear Dunes. For me, the cottage and the beach held everything I wanted. The cottage itself is delightful, with all log/wood interior, roomy and comfortable living room with floor to ceiling windows looking out on the water and a two-story stone fireplace that we used some mornings and evenings. Debbie has kept the historical ambience by using antique wooden cabinets in the kitchen. The downstairs bedroom is spacious, also with antique furniture. The bathroom is charming, with the surprise of a huge tiled shower. The large sleeping loft is accessible by a spiral staircase or by the original log stairs that winch up to the ceiling when not in use. A large deck extends from living room towards the lake and wraps around the side. We were so close to the beach that after meals on the deck, my two-year old grandson could play on the beach in the sand with us close by to watch. Over 100 feet of private beach to set up sun shelters and play on, with neighborly permission to walk as far as we wanted on the sand. A rowboat, two kayaks, lifejackets and other toys provided. The water is clean and gorgeous, protected in the bay, shallow for a distance so we could exercise by swimming or water walking. The sound of lapping waves were constantly heard. Facing west, I began a ritual of photographing and videoing the gorgeous sunset each night. My son-in-law and I sat on the beach drawing the view with both pencil and pastels. My son-in-law and husband played music on the beach during the day and by the fire pit in the evenings. Now I am back home. Whenever I want to relax, I remember being at my dream lake cottage.

Charming cottage on East Bay

  • 5 of 5

This cottage has an updated exterior with a charming log cabin interior. A lovely private beach on East Bay was just steps away from the deck. The owners are most accommodating and friendly. We enjoyed swimming, kayaking, grilling out and entertaining on the deck. We were able to check in on World Cup Soccer and sit by fire in the field stone fireplace! We had glimpses of the Blue Angels from the beach, yet we were away from the hustle and bustle of Traverse City. We loved our stay and would return. In addition we rented another great cottage across the road which worked well for our group.

Location

From the Owner

My sister and I inherited this property. My dad bought it in 1956 well before major freeways to the North. He was an avid outdoors man and enjoyed hunting and fishing. The cabin was used as a lodge for his fellow workers at the Conservation Department, as it was called then, now the DNR. We summered there with no TV or telephone, back when the cement shower stall was against the stone fireplace and the water trickled down between the bolders and I loved to watch that!
