Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Baths, 6 Sleeps
The Nugget Cabin is located at 8850 ft. in the upper Animas Valley just south of Purgatory Resort. Adjacent to US 550 where winter access to the ski area, or summer access to popular tourist attractions is no problem. It sits on one and a quarter acres with a long wooden privacy fence along the highway.
The San Juan Mountains are a mecca for summer and winter activities. Located just 24 miles north of The Nugget is Silverton, CO. A popular destination with shopping, dinning, lodging, as well as an expert ski area, many 4wd mountain passes, hiking, biking and just about any outdoor activity you could imagine. Take the Million Dollar Highway from Silverton to Ouray for more fun in Box Canyon, The Ouray Hot Springs and many other activities. South of The Nugget you can spend the evening roaming Old Main Street in Durango. A little west and you'll find yourself at Mesa Verde National Park. I've been staying in cabins while on vacation for years and The Nugget Cabin is my favorite. I love everything about it: the location in Colorado, the cozy feeling, the hot tub, the privacy, the view, and the caretakers. Have already stayed there 3 times and plan on going back in years to come. It is 1/2 mile to the Durango Mountain Resort. Take day trips to Mesa Verde, Silverton & Ouray on the Million Dollar Hwy. or the Silvertron-Durango Train, or relax in the hot tub. It's all great!
Great place and a great weekend!
Great little cabin! We loved it's character and charm. We hope to be back again soon!
I would give the cabin 7.5-8 out of ten, inside could of used a little trim work, outside the cabin was another story, I take it the lawn mower was broke ? Kind of junky outside with all the stuff laying around, not trying to be picky, but for what we paid, should of been a little nicer., location was nice, Sows Ear right down the road, excellent food by the way. Thanks.
Spacious cabin provided relaxing environment for our travels; great location
Cabin was actually better than advertised! Very convenient location; very safe and private. Property manager, Anna Westlund was wonderful and very accommodating. Check-in and out was very easy. Would stay at cabin again.
Cozy, Quiet & Romantic
My husband and I enjoyed the quiet and serene setting. During the day, we were close enough to venture into the neighboring cities of Durango and Silverton. And our nights were spent nestled on the couch by a cozy fire. We would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat!
Fun, clean cabin well equipped and centrally located
The Nugget was a neat experience for us. The cabin is architecturally interesting, with tall ceilings and a vault even in a tight footprint. It was comfy for four people, but 6-8 would start to feel a bit crowded.
The place was clean and fresh when we arrived; no sign of animal fur or the previous guests were left. Plenty of linens and towels that were all in nice shape. Soft rug, and a wood-burning stove made for warm evenings.
The one thing that isn't obvious from the pictures is that the cabin is located right off the highway (although separated by a tall privacy fence). This is fine at night, as there is very little traffic, but in the morning a relaxing soak in the very nice hottub is disrupted by the sounds of highway traffic.
The caretakers were courteous and flexible, and we would certainly stay there again if we found ourselves wanting to explore the lands between Durango and Silverton. The cabin is centrally located to be able to explore the mountain passes and Jeep trails of the San Juan national forest, with a 25 minute drive into Durango for dinner in the evenings.
