Property Details

Updated: Aug 25, 2016
Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Baths, 6 Sleeps

The Nugget Cabin is located at 8850 ft. in the upper Animas Valley just south of Purgatory Resort. Adjacent to US 550 where winter access to the ski area, or summer access to popular tourist attractions is no problem. It sits on one and a quarter acres with a long wooden privacy fence along the highway.

The San Juan Mountains are a mecca for summer and winter activities. Located just 24 miles north of The Nugget is Silverton, CO. A popular destination with shopping, dinning, lodging, as well as an expert ski area, many 4wd mountain passes, hiking, biking and just about any outdoor activity you could imagine. Take the Million Dollar Highway from Silverton to Ouray for more fun in Box Canyon, The Ouray Hot Springs and many other activities. South of The Nugget you can spend the evening roaming Old Main Street in Durango. A little west and you'll find yourself at Mesa Verde National Park. A fun place to learn about the Native American culture in South West Colorado. South/East of Durango you can explore historic Pagosa Springs and relax in the Hot Springs. There are so many fun things to do all year round, you won't be disappointed any time you come! For further details about activities in the area during your stay please contact us.

With all the comforts of modern life, it is truly a cozy (although rustic) home to accommodate a small family, several couples, or honeymooners.

Established as a rental cabin in 1987, the Nugget Cabin has a

reputation as a clean, comfortable lodging for any of your year round

vacation plans.

Cozy, Quiet & Romantic

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed the quiet and serene setting. During the day, we were close enough to venture into the neighboring cities of Durango and Silverton. And our nights were spent nestled on the couch by a cozy fire. We would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat!

Fun, clean cabin well equipped and centrally located

  • 4 of 5

The Nugget was a neat experience for us. The cabin is architecturally interesting, with tall ceilings and a vault even in a tight footprint. It was comfy for four people, but 6-8 would start to feel a bit crowded.

The place was clean and fresh when we arrived; no sign of animal fur or the previous guests were left. Plenty of linens and towels that were all in nice shape. Soft rug, and a wood-burning stove made for warm evenings.

The one thing that isn't obvious from the pictures is that the cabin is located right off the highway (although separated by a tall privacy fence). This is fine at night, as there is very little traffic, but in the morning a relaxing soak in the very nice hottub is disrupted by the sounds of highway traffic.

The caretakers were courteous and flexible, and we would certainly stay there again if we found ourselves wanting to explore the lands between Durango and Silverton. The cabin is centrally located to be able to explore the mountain passes and Jeep trails of the San Juan national forest, with a 25 minute drive into Durango for dinner in the evenings.

Fun but a little funky

  • 4 of 5

We had a really great time at the Nugget Cabin and the property managers were easy to work with: prompt and gracious. The location was perfect for us, halfway between Silverton and Durango, near the ski resort. We did a lot of high altitude hiking, but also took advantage of the fun in Durango, too. Every morning we sat at the picnic table with our toast and watched the marmots, deer, and birds frolic at the foot of the cliffs, every night we sat in the hot tub and watched the moonrise. The cabin feels so private, despite being right off the highway. Be warned, however, this is definitely a cabin, not a house. There was hot water enough for only two hikers to have warm showers. The tap water tasted strange and minerally (clearly not the Durango municipal water supply). The lighting in the house was unpredictable and strange, and the kitchen was minimally supplied. The coaches were old and uncomfortable. Pet hair was in evidence. We kept our food in the car and the fridge after mice nibbled on it in the kitchen during the first night. All of this is par for the course with a cabin and didn't dampen our fun, but if you're expecting luxury, this isn't your place.

Absolutely perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This property was right next door to the ski resort. Couldn't have been better. Property manager was very friendly when we arrived. Cabin had a nice rustic feel to it that you want. Was extremely warm because it was stocked with firewood for the wood stove. Hot tub was a treat at night time after a long day on the mountain. This was the perfect place to stay.

Amazing as always!

  • 5 of 5

My kids and I have been coming to this cabin for the last 10 years or so. As soon as we walk in the door, we feel like we are in our own home. The location of the Nugget is ideal to go and explore al the amazing places nearby, and coming back at the end of the day to a hot tub and a sky full of stars is always relaxing. I would definitely recommend staying here to anyone, I know my kids and I will keep going back for years to come.
