About Gregory Hose

My wife Susie and I have been visiting Hawaii since we met. I've always heard of Hawaii referred to as being "Romance and Magic Beside the Sea" or an "Urban Fantasy" - both have always seemed true to us. I've been visiting for all my life and although there have been many changes and improvements, the essence is still the same.

Gregory Hose purchased this condo in 2005

Why Gregory Hose chose Oahu

Over the many years of traveling to Waikiki it was very easy to narrow the choices to one of the 3 waterfront condo buildings in the main section of Waikiki. The other building had mostly side views of the ocean, while the Ilikai Marina units on the waterfront have a 180 degree panoramic view of the water. We are right on the marina so you get to see all the coming and going of boats and outriggers from the marina and the Ali Wai which feeds into the marina. If you look to the right you see all the way up the coast to the Waiani Mountain range and out to Barbers Point. You also see all the comings and goings from the 4 harbors that lie just up the coast for the first few miles - you are directly above the yacht harbor, the sport fishing harbor is next just past the mile long stretch of Ala Moana Beach and 100 acre of fabulous park in front of the worlds largest open mall. Next is Honolulu Harbor with it's cruise ships that we always watch come in while we drink our coffee on the lani. Next is Pearl Harbor, which although the entrance is probably 7-8 miles up the coast appears much closer due to the size of the ships.

You also look directly off shore at four of the best surf breaks on the South Shore, it's very cool to be able to watch what's going on in the marina and also watch the surfers right in front. This is possible because the entry to the marina was cut through the reef, so the surfing takes place directly in front of you on the outside of the reef, as

well as being visible at the breaks on either side.

The 2 choicest beaches are right next to you on either side. Our Ilikai walkway drops you right on the lagoon at the start of the nicest part of Waikiki Beach. The lagoon has had a recent $13 million make over involving deep water wells that recirculate the water and an island with waterfall, all surrounded with beach making it ideal for swimming, kayaking, floaties. This is the start of Waikiki Beach, you can walk all the way to Diamondhead.

Although compact has everything neeeded and more . Couple and two children stayed comfortably and affordable for such an awsome position and view. Highly impressed and highly recommended. Thank you for having us - this place made our holiday. Also great resturants directly below building.

View is breathtaking

  • 4 of 5

The view from the condo is outstanding! The location is perfect - close to everything, yet relatively quiet at night. I have stayed in many VRBO units over the last decade and here are the suggestions I have for the owners:

1. The balcony is WAY TOO SMALL for anyone to lounge on a hammock, so I felt your claim of including this was misleading.

2. There are WAY TOO MANY decorations in the unit. It was hard to find places to put OUR things.

3. The refrigerator needed the filter changed.

4. There were no travel coffee mugs for day trips.

5. We could never connect to secure WIFI as stated in the instructions.

6. Although they knew someone would be sleeping on the hide-a-bed, there were no sheets ready for the bed. We had to wash the new sheets left for us in the original packaging!

7. We were instructed to wash and put away the dishes upon leaving. No other VRBO request this. Everyone else expects the dishes STARTED in the dishwasher.

8. The wall lamp gets so hot we were afraid to use it.

Other than these minor annoyances, we truly enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Dear Cindy, Thank you for your suggestions. Although we have rented our unit on Vacation for a time, we are just completing a multi year refurbishing and upgrading of our condo and listing it on all the Homeaway sites. We've been trying to create the nicest unit in Waikiki and have been workng with a local artisan to make it truely unique as time and money have become available. All of your concerns are valid and are being addressed. I think what will help the most is the new Welcome Book that we finishing. It will tell you where it is and how it works. I understand how looking at the lani and wondering how the hammock could fit could be confusing. We will have pictures of how easy it is to set up in less than 5 seconds and how well it works for even a 200+ pound person like myself - it is my favorite spot to while away time and watch the world go bye. You are right in thinking it is a little over decorated. We are in the editing stage in our transition from the way it was to the new and improved. We have added so many items for our guest to use - it would cost well over$500.00 per day to rent all the aquatic gear and toys we include for free if you were to rent the equipment at the rental concessions at the lagoon or on the beach. We have designed dedicated storage for all the new additions and are just putting on the final storage touches to make everything fit comfortably. I'm sorry about the water filter light and the wi fi, they were both tripped due to a power outage. Both filter light and wi fi were able to get up and running as soon as we knew what had happened - power outages are pretty rare here. As far as the extra sheets for the sofa sleeper and the request that you wash and put away the dishes, I have never heard of that either and will straighten it out with housekeeping. The request to start the dishwasher is standard, but we can even work around that if requested. It is our desire and intention to have the best, most well equipped unit in Waikiki and offer it at a price that is far below anything comparable. We welcome any suggestions and comments that will help us reach that goal. Thanks again for your suggestions, Sincerely, Greg & Susie Hose PS The to go coffee mugs are on their way.

Great view but

  • 3 of 5

The view from the condo was fantastic. As advertised. Some small issues inside. Dont know if was remodeling, but the box and wood stuffed behind the couch was a bit tacky. Also, when im paying a good bit of money for a cleaning fee, I would expect it to be in great shape when I arrive. I am provided with what is left on the roll of toilet paper (no other I could find), hotel sized bottle of shampoo and conditioner that was already used, and an opened used bar of soap.... kind of disgusting there. Booked it for 2 nights but left after the first night.

Beautiful home with lots of treasures

  • 4 of 5

Loved all the beach toys (although didn't realize we needed to charge the kayak pump.) Lots more treasures: old Hawaiian records and player, ukulele, binoculars, coolers. Beautiful bathroom and very comfortable bed (we put the foam and mattress pad on the pull out bed making the main bed just the right amount of firm for me). This was our first stay at a VRBO and so we were a little confused by the check in process. If we had just followed the simple instructions in the email rather than trying to understand reservation agents, offices, and phone numbers in all the attachments, we wouldn't have ended up in the wrong building at first. We figured it out though and would love to stay there again.

  • A Rainforest marble slab was used to surround the deep soaking tub. A mix of bronze, copper, stone, jade, teak, koa, bamboo and porcelain all went into making the bathroom a unique experience. The very large rainfall showerhead along with a good sized multifunction showerhead with separate controls and a soon to be added matching handheld showerhead make bathing decadent, with room for you and a friend. The drain is hand carved jade with an antique bronze mirror - the kind before glass, when they used them to see their ancestors instead of to see themselves. The overflow cover is a samurai sword hand guard with 3 gilt octopi. There is also a removable teak shower seat. The wall with the bronze Chinese archer's bow towel rack with geese heads is mounted on a wall covered with handmade leaf embossed Thai kozi paper. The medicine cabinet is an antique jewelry box - carried by servants. Turned upside down so the handle is now the towel rack, the door & shelves are fused art glass.
  • 1 Bedroom, Sleeps 4

The antique steamer trunk is newly converted into a chest of drawers with a stereo phonograph, am/fm radio, CD player.tape player that also allows you to plug in your own devices. Above the stereo is a new flat screen TV built into the trunk lid with extra storage above on the Art Deco luggage rack.
