Though the place itself was beautiful, we received a call the day we arrived from the owner telling us the 2nd toilet was "sluggish" and advised us not to use. There were 5 of us and doing without the 2nd bathroom that we were told the place had was difficult. Long story short, the toilet problem was never solved even though my husband and an elderly neighbor tried cleaning out the trap. Owner offered $200 off our next visit. We asked that amount off this visit. The owner "was taken aback" at our request. Having rented on VRBO before, all properties we've previously rented had someone on call for any such issues. Also, the place allows pets and there is a strong dog odor in the lower level.

Owner's Response: The facts are; 1) On the Saturday these guests arrived, our housekeeper, for our Star Lake home, called us Said mainfloor toilet flush was slow and needed a plumber. Called several area plumbers getting voicemails and left msg's for callbacks This is a very busy time of year for contractors up there. 2) We called the guests, spoke to the husband. Advised him of the problem. He flushed the toilet to test, said it was slow flushing. I expressed concern re: their coping with the situation during their stay, told him we were calling for a plumber and would keep trying to get one there. The husband stated he did not forsee a problem and that they would be fine. There is a full shower/bath bathroom on the second floor and the problem toilet accepted liquid 3) Monday a.m. spoke to several plumbing contractors. They all wanted to schedule us for the following weeks. Finally, Muskyland Plumbing of Eagle River said they had a plumber on assignment near Star Lake Wednesday He would call us after assignment finished Meanwhile we caled two handymen we use for the property intent on asking them to plumber's "snake" the toilet drain Got vm. Left msgs Found out one was engaged in plumbing project and no time that week 4) We called the guests, told husband of arrangement. Promised to contact him before plumber arrival. He stated they were fine with current situation and there was no need to rush. 5) On Wednesday the plumber called. I called guests. Guests not at the Retreat but secured their permission, from the husband, for the plumber enter house. The plumber said he could not create improvement, thought the problem was the 4 yr old toilet. Asked plumber when install a new one. He said call his office next a.m. 6) Thurs a.m. the plumbing contractor told us new toilet & next plumber would be ready the following Monday. I set the appointment and called the guests. Spoke to the husband who said they were doing fine and the situation was acceptable to him 7) Spoke to guest Friday. Thanked husband for their patience. Told him I would deduct $200.00 off their next stay. He said he wanted $200.00 now. I was surprised by his claim of a problem, given his week of statements assuring me they were fine and no problems ""Elderly neighbor" noted in guest review was handyman I called before, who showed up Friday " Dog smell " was from mouse who expired under furnace during week Found by housekeeper during cleaning. If guests tell us of " smells ", we send housekeeper
