Great location for hiking and exploring.
Laughing Bear Cabin is a perfect home base for exploring nearby hiking trails and the Mt. Hood area. This historic cabin is cozy and comfortable (although a bit cluttered as a few previous reviews have mentioned) and has everything you need to settle in. The fireplace was especially nice after cool and rainy hiking days. Lots of great spots nearby for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Idyllic Historic Retreat
I can't recommend Laughing Bear Cabin highly enough. If you've always been curious about Steiner cabins, this is a great way to experience one. You'll love all the details, from the curved wood on the door, stair railings, and curtain rods, to the clever door latches with their locking pegs. The decor is relaxed and homey. (You'll feel as though you've been loaned a family cabin by a generous and trusting friend.) There were just two of us and it's a perfect romantic retreat—hot tubbing at night, sitting in front of the fire or watching films together, and lying in bed with the windows open listening to the sound of the river and the wind in the trees. But we could see how this would have been a great spot for a group vacation (which would be extremely affordable). The downstairs bedroom is right next to the main bathroom. Upstairs, each of the two bedrooms has its own sink and there is a toilet at the end of the hall. This is a clever arrangement that would allow guests to get ready in the morning without much fighting over facilities. There is something about the whimsy of a log cabin in the woods that brought out our child natures. On the first night we decided to indulge all our most irresponsible food cravings. For my partner that meant macaroni and cheese and Hostess Ho Hos. I chose paté and port. Later we used our iPhones as flashlights to make hand shadow puppets. When it was time to leave, we were reluctant to return to the grown-up world of schedules and responsibilities and consoled ourselves by thinking we'd come back and see the cabin in different seasons. We were grateful to our hosts for granting those two nights of enchantment.
It’s a Steiner!
These were the first words my parents heard as they pulled up to the property. We had no idea what a Steiner cabin was, but the lady walking by told us “this was definitely a Steiner cabin”. Turns out Steiner was a guy and his two sons who built this very cool and unique cabins around Oregon. The details in this cabin are incredible from the live wood railing on the stairs to the wood knot doorknobs it is a very articulately constructed cabin. We had 6 adults and 2 dogs and were very comfortable with our stay. Even with the community only being 2 minutes off the highway you’d swear there wasn’t a soul around when you step outside it is so quiet. The hot tub was a great way to relax at night and the trails around the river were perfect for morning walks. We drove up to Trellium Lake and Mt Hood Ski bowl for some fun summer activities and the drive was easy for an afternoon. Highly recommend and will be back!
The cabin was everything that the listing spoke about and more. The view from the balcony was spectacular and the walk to Little Zig Zag River was very short and beautiful. The owner even stopped by to pick up trash for us and called me on the first night to ensure everything was good and that we had no problem checking in. We would definitely rent this cabin again and look forward to our next visit!!
Beautiful cabin and area.
The cabin was absolutely beautiful and everything you need for your stay. All we had to bring is our food. We forgot our salt and pepper, and it was supplied . Lucky us! One major issue is, if you are a light sleeper be prepared, it is an old fashioned completely made out of logs cabin and makes a lot of noise. But it was worth it.
Thank you Brad, you have a wonderful vacation spot.
Rustic, charming cabin
The place is charming. It really could sleep ten and has seating for them at dinner time. The best furnished rental we have stayed at. The owner was very responsive and checked that everything was going okay. On the way to Mt. Hood, but feels like out in the woods. Downside: small bathroom. However it was worth it to stay there.
