Why Jean Phelps chose Manitou Springs
As a little girl growing up in western Kansas, my mother and I would take several trips a year out to Colorado, riding the Cog Railway every August. As the Cogway traveled toward the summit of Pikes Peak, I remember many times gazing over at this particular cottage situated on the mountainside dreaming about what it would be like to own that home. After being in the previous owners family for over 100 years, I magically had the opportunity to purchase the historic hillside home. Spending time at the vacation home has brought back special memories of the time I spent here with my mother (who has sadly passed away). I hope all guests who stay here will feel how special (in so many ways) this property really is.
What makes this Cottage unique
We could not believe this property was finally for sale after being in the same family for over 100 years. We jumped at the chance to own this particular cottage located in such a special "residential owners only" area on the upper edge of historic Manitou Springs. Take in the fresh mountain air while sitting on the balcony overlooking Ruxton Creek, listen for the Cog Railway blow it's horn, watch people ride up to Pikes Peak summit waving as they go by. Walk a few hundred feet and arrive at Barr Trail TH, Manitou Incline, and Cog Railway. The historic and unique cottage is located at the end of a private road providing unparalleled privacy, quiet, and unbeatable views of Garden of the Gods, surrounding mountains, wildlife, and the valley below.

Love 622 Ruxton.
Beautiful unique property in great location. Exactly what we needed to get away and relax.
Great Colorado Getaway!
This is a beautiful old home, which has been significantly updated. The master bath is like a spa! The house is built into the side of a hill, so the many steps may be difficult for older travelers or those with a lot of luggage. Overall, we loved it!
Awesome place but special considerations
This might be one of the most enchanting places I’ve rented, and I rent at least once a year. The house is built on the side of Pike’s Peak a small ways up from Manitou Springs. It’s very special. It’s comfortable and accommodating and decorated very nicely. The only consideration is that there are steep stairs from the street where you park and two sets of stairs inside the house. This is because it’s built on the side of a mountain. No problem for us but it was a chore with our one and two year old. I don’t regret renting the house but probably not ideal for people with small children like us or mobility issues. I will say that there was a crib and enough baby gates for the house. I chased my one year old all over in order to keep him away from the electronics and other things he was trying to get at. I got to look at the AMAZING hot tub but didn’t get to use it like I thought I would. I think I’ll come back with a bunch of adults next time and enjoy it properly!
This is our third time staying at the "Ruxton Retreat" and it NEVER disappoints! The soft rush of Ruxton creek, proximity to a quaint and charming town with lots of great restaurants and great shopping and plenty of outdoor fun. They stepped it up at the Retreat with the addition of a hot tub that has a great view of the mountains. Jean is an Awesome host! Always helpful and always reachable. This is one our absolute favorite places to visit and we will continue to come for many years to come.
Cozy mountain house!!
Loved the house! Perfect for our stay, was very warm and inviting. Loved all the extra blankets around the house too!
This property is incredible
We loved everything about Ruxton Retreat. First, the hot tub was so relaxing after walking all day, and after the long car ride to Colorado. The beds were so comfortable and the view was amazing. It was so fun to watch the sun come up with a cup of coffee and a blanket early in the morning. I've seen some complaints about the stairs, and there are three sets of fairly steep stairs, one going up to the front door, one going to the second floor and one going the the third floor, however, if you are in halfway decent physical condition, it isn't a problem. If you suffer from asthma or a physical condition that prevents you from climbing stairs, you may want to reconsider, other than that, this place is amazing and well taken care of. We will definitely be back!
