Max and Laurie live right on Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio. We have six kids with one still at home (10) and 5 who are grown plus 5 grandchildren. Family members of all ages love our Mexico home.

MAX STARK purchased this condo in 2007

Why MAX STARK chose Quintana Roo

Perfect balance:

- Resort is the perfect size.... Intimate/not huge but offers full service/all amenities.

- Quiet residential neighborhood with 10 minute walk to vibrant downtown

- Extremely safe for families and children and easy to get to

- Mexican people are gracious and genuinely like Americans

What makes this condo unique

Being smack on the Caribbean... being on the beach in literally a minute.

Privacy with world class hotel amenities

Convenient to so many wonderful places

Gated community... safer than our neighborhood in the U.S. (which is quite safe itself!)

Great location, but resort and unit have seen better days

  • 2 of 5

Things can, sometimes do, happen when you travel & renting a private home can be a risky proposition. We've rented many homes and I always spend weeks researching. We’ve often been pleasantly surprised to enter a lovely, well-equipped, vacation home. We had high hopes for this condo as many of the units in Fishermen’s have been beautifully remodeled, but this one is dated and needs repair and a facelift.

Upon move-in, the master suite A/C was broken and water leaking from the ceiling of the 2nd bedroom created a puddle in front of the closet. Our girls couldn’t use the closet and had to walk around wet towels to the bathroom; we adapted to repairmen working in our girls’ bedroom for 3 days. Since we had no A/C in the master, we slept with the slider and window wide open. The A/C was fixed on Wed.; that day the girls found water leaking from their toilet requiring another call to maintenance and replacement of a valve. By Thurs., both problems had been resolved, but loud work started on the unit above us at 7 am and continued through Fri. We left Saturday.

On arrival, we were very surprised to find no staples in the kitchen: no salt, pepper, basic spices, oil, paper towels, coffee filters, dish liquid ... NOTHING! We've rented many homes, and there are always staples left by previous renters. We had to buy everything! Max & Juan both suggested that the cleaning person may have taken everything ... maybe, but doesn’t anyone check?

Issues that we made note of: the master slider and window were very hard to open, felt swollen & the outside handle of the slider was hanging by one screw. Living room cushions are worn & faded. King mattress is very old, there are holes in the fabric; past-due for replacement. There really are no views from balconies as the palm trees in the photograph have grown and obscure the view. The pools have many tiles missing from the floor (I got a small cut on my foot). Breakfasts are very good, but we only ate dinner one evening, a buffet, otherwise the menu was small. Avoid a couples massage or pedicure at the “spa.” My husband was on a table way across the room from me (what’s the point?), and my massage was the worst I’ve ever had. Pedicure was done in the woman’s lap, no pedi chair, nails cut too short and she nicked me. I don’t think the spa employees are really trained to do these things.

Max & Juan showed great concern, but our week could have been better. Not the best rental we’ve ever had.

Owner's Response: The renter was a thoughtful, reasonable person, who, unfortunately, ran into what appeared to be "the perfect storm" of issues. As you can tell by other reviews and the frequency with which this unit is rented, this party's experience is by no means representative of the vast majority of experiences. As also described, we were very responsive to those issues as we are to any issues or needs that renters have. The issues cited by the reviewer have either already been repaired (AC, sliding door, handle) or will be within a month (mattress in the master bedroom). As to staples, we have never fielded, even once, a complaint about this before. Normally, most "staples" are present on check-in (as well as other food stuffs) as left by renters.

We loved our stay here so much. The review by Diane W is spot on. The resort is fantastic and the beach is absolutely amazing. We took our family of 7 which consisted of 2 teenage boys, 2 adult kids, a son in law and my husband and I. There was space for all. The little room which we called a closet ;) worked out perfect for one of our teenage boys. Max also offered to let us use a blow up mattress but we didn't need it. The resort is so close to everything yet very secluded in a private/gated community. It's just perfect. If and when we come back, this is where we'll go. Thanks Max and Laurie for a great experience! Best wishes always.

Perfect Family Vacation Spot!

  • 5 of 5

While trying not to repeat the other reviewers, I give this condo 5-Stars for all the reasons they noted! We visited over a 10-day spring break in late March and had a car. Our group included the 50-something parents, with 30 yr old son & daughter-in-law, and teenage daughter - and we all had a fabulous time. The condo is set-up as explained. There are two sections: upon entry, one door leads to a large suite with two beds, lots of shelving for clothes/suitcases, etc., and a bathroom, where the adult couple stayed. It gave them their own space and privacy, which was nice. The other section leads to the main bedroom, a very small bedroom that just fits one bed, and more shelving and a large bathroom, with separate sinks. This worked ideally for my husband and I, and daughter that stayed in the small room (which could fit no more than 2 very small children used to sleeping together or one older kid). Then the unit has a kitchen, table (with 4 chairs - could use 1-2 more), and a living room - all opening onto a lovely deck with view to pool and beach. While it's not fancy, it certainly was very accommodating to use as a home base. We had breakfast, snacks, and sometimes lunch at the condo (shopped at Wal-Mart!), then generally ate out in the evening, but it has a kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, and most of the appliances one might expect at home, so one could cook as much as desired. The resort itself was perfect sized for us: with ~ 65 units, it was large enough to have staff, pools, hot tub, restaurant, some organized activities, but not so big as to be crazy. Also, the resort had enough pool chairs, wonderful, shaded cabanas, etc., that I think everyone basically got what they wanted, at a very busy time of year - and no one had to put their towel out at 7 am to save their spot!!!! Also, all the staff we interacted with were super helpful and polite. We used the condo as a base to explore the area, including Tulum, Xel-Ha, zip lines, cenotes, Cozumel, as well as the 5th Avenue scene, spending a day at the resort, then a day of activity - and it was a perfect balance of vacation. We're all dreaming of how soon we can return, and I'd definitely recommend renting this condo from Max. He's in Ohio, we're in Oregon, and one always wonders how these arrangements will work out. Max responded quickly, got us the paperwork, everything was as originally set-forth - and it was an easy, hassle-free experience. Hope you get to enjoy!

Owner's Response: We consider ourselves fortunate to rent to family after family, group after group, that are terrific people. This family is another example of wonderful people that take care of a rented home the same caring way they take of their own home. Just a couple of clarifications: - A number of couples have stayed in the small 3rd bedroom. The room is not much bigger than the bed, but the bed itself is what in Mexico is called a "matrimonial", which is very close to the queen in the U.S. and elsewhere. It is literally made with a married couple in mind... that's why it's called a matrimonial. - There are five chairs (not four) that can go around the dining room table and we have four folding chairs that we use mostly on the balconies, which can augment the dining room chairs.

I have stayed at this condo on four separate occasions. It is by far my favorite place to stay in Playa. It is within walking distance to Playa Del Carmen. The condo is large, well maintained, and is well equipped. We typically stay for a couple of weeks. Half the time we eat at restaurants and half of the time we eat in. The kitchen has everything you need to be able to comfortably cook home made dinners. The staff are friendly and very helpful. There are activities planned at the condo if you are looking for organized games, classes, or exercises. The spa is wonderful. You can get a massage while feeling the ocean breezes, and listening to the surf. The ocean is easily accessible from the condo. Just a few steps away. I highly recommend this condo. I look forward to many more stays in the future.

Recently back from my 4th stay & plan to return

Extremely well situated. Short walk on the beach to Playa del Carmen's main pedestrian walkway. Many excellent entertainment and dining options are available within a 20 minute walk or a $5 cab ride. The resort staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The owner is wonderfully accommodating. The suite is clean, modern and well maintained.

I enjoyed my morning coffee each day from the second floor balcony that overlooks the stunning turquoise and blue seascape. I didn't need much more that the sound of the morning surf, a gentle warm tropical breezes and a good "page turner" book.

Down at beach level, fellow "fisherman" dwellers are relaxed and friendly. In town you can get an hour long massage on the beach for $20. These can be can be hit or miss, depending on the masseuse. This past year, I found a good one and went back to her three more times. The clear night sky is a treat for star gazing.

Fishermans Village resort is a perfect location. Very nice beach and well maintained. Access to town (5th Ave & 10 Ave) easily walk-able, and many great restaurants. The resort provided good service and many amenities. The actual suite was large and provided more than enough space and functional for our group. Some difficulties with the lack of hot water. Beds and linens could use updating. The maid service should be provided mid week. Overall strong VRBO location but needed a little extra TLC.
