House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 8
Loon Lodge is a beautiful and private waterfront home on Long Lake, one of the most popular lakes in northern Michigan. The house is a secluded retreat; the property has more than 200 feet of frontage on the lake and the next closest house is more than 100 yards away, completely hidden by trees.
The house is directly on Long Lake. You can jump off the dock and enjoy the clear waters. The water is crystal clear and the bottom is a mix of sand and small rocks.
The house has a dock and a deck that looks over the lake. There is a mooring for boats and we provide a canoe and row boat for you to use. You can explore the five public islands in the lake, watch the sunset from the deck or dock and swim whenever you want. There is a small beach when the lake water level is low.
Loon Lodge has two large bedrooms and two baths and sleeps up to 8 people. The house has new beds and linens, a new gas grill, high speed internet, a TV with limited reception and a DVD player. Loon Lodge also has a new furnace and new washer and dryer.
Traverse City is just 15 minutes away so you have easy access to shopping, movies and activities. There are public tennis courts just down the street and a public boat launch across the lake. Fishing is excellent in Long Lake.

About the Owner
About Tim Calkins
Our family has owned this property for almost 100 years; our grandparents started coming up from Chicago about 1910 and bought a place a little after that. We've been coming up ever since.
We started renting Loon Lodge about 10 years ago and have enjoyed welcoming guests to the house and the area.
Tim, our main contact person, lives in Chicago with his wife and three kids. They make it up to Long Lake every summer.
Tim Calkins purchased this house in 1990
Why Tim Calkins chose Northern Michigan
Long Lake is wonderful. It is big enough for sailing and canoe trips, but not scary like Lake Michigan. The water is clear and warms up during the summer.
Our house is close to Traverse City, a cute northern Michigan town, but very private, far back in the woods.
What makes this house unique
Loon Lodge is a perfect place to relax. There is a lot to do but simply kicking back at the house is so tempting.
Loon Lodge has a private deck, lawn and beach area. You are free to swim, sail, water ski, read or just sleep in, listening to the waves.
The adventurous types will head out to hike the Sleeping Bear Dunes, canoe the Boardman or Platte Rivers, bike the local trails, go horseback riding and tour the vineyards and craft brewers. Golfers will try to different courses in the area.
Long Lake is great for fishing. You can play tennis nearby or explore charming Traverse City, with the busy Front Street area.
It is a great spot for a vacation.

Wonderful cottage getaway
It is a wonderful setting as it is both remote (tucked away in the woods by the lake) and close to all the modern conveniences of the city. The cottage is very cozy and the outdoor seating is a real plus. Having access to a canoe is a lot of fun. Overall, it is the perfect woodland get away .
Nicely equipped. Close to Traverse. Great location on the lake.
My husband and I searched for the perfect place for our honeymoon, and Loon Lodge was absolutely beyond expectation. The cabin is in excellent condition and it was great to have our own dock, canoe, grill, etc. It is very secluded, but only a few minutes from downtown Traverse City. For those venturing out, the cabin isn't far from Sleeping Bear Dunes, Fishtown, winery trails, etc (which I also recommend visiting). The scenery is beautiful at the cabin. We spent a lot of our time just sitting outside on the dock. We both commented that it was our first vacation and location that we had a hard time saying goodbye to at the end of our stay. We plan on returning in years to come as it is also the perfect location for family and couple trips. Highly recommend!!!
We loved our stay at Loon Lodge. We were two couples plus a four month old - the space is ideally suited for families traveling together, with two en suite baths and a large living room complete with comfortable seating, books, and wonderful views of the lake and surrounding scenery. The weather was beautiful, so we took full advantage of the canoe, and the dock (for swimming). This is a wonderfully private property that is very clean. Tim, the owner, is extremely responsive, and sent a plumber out to help us when we had a minor plumbing issue in one of the bathrooms (problem fixed right away). My husband loves to cook, and we found the kitchen well-appointed, including with all the tools we needed to grill. It's clear the owners care about their property. We felt very welcome. The pictures here don't do it justice - the lake and the trees are very beautiful. You'll be well-positioned here to explore northern MI, including Leland, Lake Leelanau, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Suttons Bay, etc. Don't miss a trip, or several, to Moomer's for ice cream - it's just down the road.
Wonderful stay at Loon Lodge.
We (two couples) had a wonderful time at Loon Lodge. The scenery is spectacular and the serenity of the lake and forest was just what we needed. We even had a loon on the lake in front of our cabin morning and evening. Nothing authenticates your north woods experience like the sounds of loons calling across the water. The weather turned cold and windy so we only got to eat dinner and enjoy s'mores on the dock one night. Other evenings we enjoyed the warmth and coziness of a fire in the fireplace. The cabin had all the comforts of home that we could ask for and was perfect for two couples:two roomy bedrooms, two bathrooms, and large central living room. Having wifi was great. TV reception was not great due, I think, to the rural and rustic nature of the area, which we enjoyed. Having TV is not very important to us, especially with wifi to keep informed. Traverse City is just a short jaunt away and there are a plethora of great restaurants and shopping there. Brunch at The Blue Heron or Patisserie Amie is is not to be missed. Pizza from That'sa Pizza is very good. And the cabin is just down the road from Moomer's Ice Cream! The autumn leaves were just starting to turn but it was still a pleasant, easy drive through lovely wine country with both the woods and the waters along Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas. Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is spectacular scenery as is Sleeping Bear Dune. Loon Lodge is a lovely cabin in a beautiful setting and a peaceful woodland experience. The kitchen is cozy but adequate for fixing full meals. The road back to the cabin is a little bumpy and narrow but it really verifies that you are leaving the hustle and bustle of city life behind. The lake is gorgeous and as soon as we drove up we fell in love with the cabin and setting. We hated to leave and hope to return as soon as we can. Tim provided lots of helpful information both before we got there and with the guest information. Tim also provided us with numbers to be used if needed but we did not need that. By all means, follow Tim's directions, not your GPS.
Fantastic! HIGHLY recommend this nature haven.
Booking was very easy through VRBO and paypal. Tim was very quick to respond.
The driving directions provided by Tim were fantastic….use those.
It was fun to drive through the long, winding, tree lined road to the house.
I couldn't get the door open….my husband had to do it each time :)
The house was spotless.
There were some supplies left for us~ pump soap, toilet paper, paper towels, bar soap.
We slept in the 2 bigger beds. We used the daybeds to lay on during the day.
We only used the shower/bath during the week. The water pressure was good and stayed hot for 3 quick showers in a row…the 4th was iffy. :)
We didn't cook while there….but the fridge and microwave worked well.
We never turned the tv on.
The internet connection worked at all times, except during a thunderstorm.
We used the washer a few times during the week ….had to wash the towels we brought from home and some random clothes. it worked well.
We used the dryer a little bit more due to drying our wet swimming stuff.
We swam off the pier on a few occasions and did end up with the lake itch that Tim informs you about. The kids were 100% w/o any red bumps within 6 hours of getting out of the water. They were just super itchy for those hours. We always got out of the water and washed off in the tub with soap. If they were super itchy, we used benadryl cream. My husband got it the worst and is at home with at least 10 bumps on his legs still.
The water was super clean. Only saw fish at night and they were tiny.
The windows are temperamental at moments. I learned which ones would fall off of their track when winding back in. I had hubby help push those closed from outside daily. Only a few windows have window treatments. It took me a minute to get used to it at night.
The fire pit and patio were perfect at night.
We never used the heat or indoor fireplace.
We HIGHLY recommend staying here and hope to stay here again in the future.
The house was perfect for us. I know your family will love it as much as we did.

Activity and Interests
Northern Michigan is a wonderful place for a summer vacation.
You can swim in the clear waters of Long Lake, hike through the woods, relax on the deck or dock or beach, or paddle around Long Lake in the canoe we provide. The five islands in Long Lake are all public; they are great for exploring and picnics.
If you bring your own boat and launch it at the nearby public boat ramp you can waterski or sail; Long Lake is a wonderful lake for water sports.
There are all sorts of activities in the area. You can explore the Sleeping Bear Dunes, canoe on the Platte, Boardman or Crystal Rivers, visit bustling Traverse City, shop at the outlets, go to concerts at Interlochen Music Camp, visit the local wineries and bicycle around the area.
This is a wonderful house for families and couples.
