Bedrooms 1
Space 800 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Simple cottage with 1 bedroom and 1 bath perfect for a couple but will sleep 5

Quiet, remote, escape from the big city...this is Prudence Island. Our cottage is very simple, but extremely adequate to sink into Prudence and forget the mainland. Our rate of $750 per week is less than half of the average rate for a cottage on Prudence Island, but you will have the same opportunities to experience what makes Prudence Island so special. The Island offers an unhurried pace of life and is like a step back in time. You will find no commercialism here. When you board the ferry in Bristol, Rhode Island, leave all your stress on the dock. If you are looking for the buzz of big city night life or the excitement of a theme park, then you have come to the wrong place. If you are looking for total relaxation and a renewal of your spirit, then Prudence Island is for you.

Prudence Island is a whale-shaped island in the center of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Accessible only by ferry or private boat, it feels like a million miles away, but is only a short distance from Providence-Rhode Island's capital, and the mansions of

Newport, Rhode Island. There are no motels, restaurants or convenience stores, so plan on bringing everything you need. If your in-laws decide they need to pop in during your Island vacation, they need to know in advance that there are no instant accommodations on the Island. They will stay with you, eat the food you have brought and deplete your toiletries. There is a very small store that carries some essentials, but there is no guarantee they will be operating or open when you need them. Of course, you can leave the Island and go to the mainland, but you may not want to.

There are several websites on the internet to help you better get a feel for Prudence and the exciting areas around the Island to visit during day trips. Prudence Island, The Farnham Farm, Prudence Conservancy, Newport and Bristol Rhode Island are all good searches to start with. Explore the Internet, then make your reservations to explore one of the world's little pieces of heaven-Prudence Island.

About Elizabeth Lilley

Prudence Island has seen many generations of my family. We are true Islanders and have been going to Prudence for decades. We currently live in North Carolina and don't get to go to the Island as much as we would like to, but that will change with retirement! Prudence is the only place I go that truly renews me to face the real world.

Why Elizabeth Lilley chose Portsmouth

Prudence is a family place. I can't imagine not going to Prudence. The Island is not for everyone and you either love it or hate it. If you love it, it becomes part of you and you need it to renew yourself for life's stress. The people who aren't happy with Prudence are those that want to be entertained and need a certain lifestyle to be happy. Prudence has no commercialism because the Islanders do not want it. People and nature make up Prudence and that is all you need to have one of the most relaxing vacations you have ever had.

What makes this cottage unique

No commercialism, a step back in time. People are friendly. No one cares if you have makeup on or not, or what your current fashion statement is. Everyone waves, speaks and is actually nice! Since Prudence is an island, there are beaches all around and every one is different. We have majestic New England rocks in front of our cottage, but if you walk 3 minutes down the hill, there is more of your traditional beach with coarse sand. If you go to the west side of the Island, the beaches are fine sand and you can often go and not see another person. You will not want to watch television or constantly have your Ipad on-there is too much to do and see.

The cottage is your typical New England summer cottage with the weathered cedar shakes. It is small and simple, but has all you need to become an Islander for a week or so. There is nothing fancy and it may be described as more of a cabin. There is no air conditioner, but nights are cool and we seldom even turn on the fans. The property sits at the peak of the Island and goes right down to the coastline. There is one private bedroom with a double bed, two single beds in the living/main room area and another single bed on the glassed in porch. The kitchen is adequate, complete with microwave. There is a television that receives one or two local channels for those of you who need your daily news. There is a gas grill but you will need to bring your own propane. There is also a new charcoal grill and there may or may not be charcoal and starter, so it is best to bring that also. Since there is no commercialism, you need to bring every you need to enjoy your stay at Prudence.

The cottage was tidy and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The sunrises were amazing!

  • 5 of 5

My childhood memories of Prudence are wonderful. What a surprise, after 45 years away, to find that it's even more magical than I remember. As I overheard my mom saying during our stay, "when you're here, the rest of the world just slips away".

The views from the cottage were fabulous. Elizabeth replied promptly to my inquiries and left clear instructions about use of the cottage. Though certainly not handicap accessible, my mother found the staircase easier to manage than I had feared. The motion sensor lights along the staircase were helpful. Ann and Bob across the street were gracious neighbors. They offered both Island information and produce from their amazing gardens. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay. This short visit leaves me needing to plan a longer stay!

We loved our stay on Prudence Island and hope to come back and visit in the future. The weather was beautiful and we loved the nightly cool breezes. Everyone on Prudence Island were very friendly and always waved when we passed by. The cottage was perfect for my family and we enjoyed our stay very much.

Quiet, remote, and rejuvenating!

  • 4 of 5

The Cottage was a great size for two, with extra beds for children. We spent a majority of our stay enjoying the beautiful views in the hammock and back yard. We used the grill each night and enjoyed sitting with some red wine to watch the sunset. The lighthouse and beach is right down the hill so we were able to fish a fair amount... caught about 5 bass in 30 min! Everyone on the island was friendly. We were able to explore most of the island by car and morning jogs, but would definitely suggest bringing bikes. Elizabeth was a wealth of knowledge so we were well prepared to spend a long weekend away from stores, restaurants, and the general hustle and bustle!

Long Island New York

"Smile and wave boys ......Smile and wave."

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time on Prudence Island as Elizabeth suggested I highly recommend stopping in to visit Bob and Ann who reside across the street to your left looking out the front door. They are truly some of the nicest people I have met. Bobs vast knowledge of this Island is second to none. Our three kids wanted to fish....he not only showed us where to go he took us there and fished with us for hours. The island is beautiful with exceptional views. It's best to be prepared food wise and if it rains and you have kids. I would highly recommend bicycles if you have the means to transport them. As I write this sitting by the bay ......I will miss the sound of the bouy that has a bell you can hear in the distance. Truly a different way of living but one I will miss. Take the time to read the book Elizabeth made availiable for all to read. It gives some perspective of how life on the island began and the history behind it

Owner's Response: Thank you and I have to agree with you on the view! I never get tired of it and there is nowhere else I would rather be than sitting on our bench at night, watching the lights from boats in the Bay.
