Property not kept up

The cabin itself is in fine condition and in a nice wooded spot. It could have been a lovely place to stay if it had been properly maintained. However, It appeared that little cleaning had been done in a long time--perhaps we were the first people to stay for the summer? The kitchen was not well maintained, dishes on the shelves were dirty, and there was no way of making coffee, other than an ancient aluminum percolator, which still had traces of old grounds in it. The bathroom had a couple of spider webs with dead bugs, and the outdoor seating area was so dirty that we did not use it. We stayed in two other properties in Oregon and California on this same trip for about the same price and much nicer.

Although the location is next to the river, there is no river access (the road ends in fenced-off private property with no trespassing signs), which is not clear from the listing and the other reviews. So, when my daughter wanted to take a dip in the river our first night, we had to drive to a state park public access area several miles away.

Perfectly Rustic

If you are looking for the Ritz-Carlton this is not your spot, however if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful place to leave our hectic world behind, this is your spot. Our family goes to Cresent City at least once a year, usually staying in an overpriced hotel room. This year we have a new baby, so it didn't seem like a viable option, so we booked a house and we were so pleased with what we got here. The home is located in a small neighborhood you would never even know existed if it wasn't your destination. The owners, Brenda and Dale, are so friendly we felt that we had discovered old friends. (They even offered us an extra night) This home is clean and comfy, but the best part is that you can tell that it is cared for, they are making upgrades when they can. It has a brand new addition to the deck, there is brand new linoleum, and a fabulous new barbeque.

The location itself is to die for. We had never explored the South fork of the Smith river before, but I already want to go back. As I said earlier, we go to Cresent City yearly, but this time we didn't do our usual beach and the redwoods. We went to Trees of Mystery instead, which was incredible. For a very reasonable cost we were able to hike through a pristine forest and then take a gondola to the top of a mountain overlooking the ocean. (We could even take our dog)

On a side note, if you are planning a getaway to this area, we usually go to Endert's beach when we aren't lugging a stroller. It one of a very few places to find whole sandollars on your own.

This is an amazing place to stay with some fabulous folks and we wholeheartedly look forward to our return!

Thank you so much,

Tim, Heather, Lauryn, and Laynie!

Very comfortable and safe!

  • 5 of 5

Just got home from spending Labor Day weekend at this wonderful cottage/cabin. There were supposed to be four of us, but my Son had to work. So, my Daughter-in-law, Grandson and myself spent the weekend without him there. I am a pretty brave lady, but when it comes to the safety of my family, I am very cautious! This cottage is pretty remote, which I prefer. Quiet, clean, and the best part for me was that we felt perfectly safe! Would have loved to have met Brenda, maybe next time. Nice meeting you Dale, and thanks for the great place to stay!

Fun place to visit

  • 4 of 5

This was a fun place to stay. Our family had a great time visiting the nearby Redwoods, Crescent City, and the Beach. Beautiful area in the forest surrounded by trees and the Smith River below. We enjoyed our stay and would come again.
