Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Manager Brett did a great job of communicating with us. He gave us a lot of information that was useful during our stay in the Black Hills. The house was perfect for my family and me. There was plenty of room for my wife and me and our four boys. The boys loved being out in the yard and climbing on the hills. The mountain road to the house was steep but driving in low gear took care of any complaints my minivan thought about making. The location was perfect as we were pretty centrally located for the many activities we wished to enjoy while in the area.

Nature Lovers Haven

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 had a wonderful stay at this well maintained cabin. There was plenty of room for all of us to have our own space during the day (when we did stay in, which was rare). The kids loved playing flashlight tag at night on the mountain and viewing the stars. The road to the house can be a bit daunting in the fog/low clouds, but the minivan had no problem with the switchbacks and grades. The roads were VERY well taken care of and if you go the speed limit you will have no problem at all!

If you need anything while you are there, just give Brett a call. He provides great customer service! We lost power within minutes of checking in (honest). We called him from the land line--don't count on cell phones working--and he called the power company and then kept us updated on the status. The power company had it resolved within 2 hours. YAY! Brett also sent us suggestions of things to do and places to go and was responsive whenever we called.

One thing to remember is that there isn't a quick run to the store if you need anything so plan ahead. We stopped at Krull's in Hill City on the way in to get our meat for dinner/lunch for the week and brought all our canned goods with us from home. Rapid City has a Wal-Mart and other grocery stores.

Oh, and don't count on cell service. You are on a Mountain and you are remote. If you want to become completely unplugged (no cell phone and no internet) this location should work for you. There is a land line in the cabin and you can make local calls, so you are not completely cut off.

As for what to do, Mt. Rushmore is a must, and Custer State Park is beautiful. Plan some time and try the different scenic road/hwys and take in the sights. Besides the regular places to go, you HAVE to go to the winery in Hill City and taste the berry wines. The rhubarb wine is amazing!! No matter what, a visit to the Badlands HAS to be in your itinerary. The sights are stunning and you will not want to rush through this amazing place.
