Private Beachfront on Lake Michigan - The Respite

Bedrooms 5
Property type house
Minimum Stay nights

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, 12 Sleeps

Our Lake Michigan beachfront home sits on a sand dune overlooking our large private beach. Swim in the Lake, sunbathe on the beach, roast marshmallows under the stars and admire magnificent sunsets without ever leaving home.

This house has been in our family for three generations and it is quite simply our favorite place. Our family always comes back from all over the country to enjoy it each summer, to disconnect from day to day life and reconnect with each other. It is our honor to share this special place with you when we can't be there. We expect our guests to treat it with the same careful respect we do.

This year round home features 4 large bedrooms:

1st master bedroom (king bed); 2nd master bedroom (king bed); 1st back bedroom (queen beds); 2nd back bedroom (queen bed); private loft that sleeps 4 (two twins + double futon).

The house features 3 bathrooms:

Master bath (walk in shower, two person Jacuzzi, pedestal sink); 2nd Master bath (walk in shower and large vanity); 3rd back bathroom (tub/shower combo and large vanity);

Private outdoor shower & changing area.

Refresh in an al fresco shower after a long day on the beach before hitting the town. This is also a perfect area to wash off sandy kids and go from bathing suit to PJs.

The great room offers a panoramic view of the lake,

generous seating and a large fireplace. The large flat screen TV has cable and a DVD for cozy movie nights. The house has free wifi and a computer nook so you can stay in touch even on vacation.

The kitchen has all modern appliances (oven, microwave, range, dishwasher, disposal) with an adjacent wet bar and extra work nook. The kitchen and dining area are open concept for easy socializing while you cook and comes fully stocked with pots & pans, toaster, silverware, dishes and serving wear. The dining area seats 10 comfortably. We love to have big family dinners here and play a lot of late night card games.

The house has a washer/dryer and plenty of soft cozy linens.

Wonderful Beachfront Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family, and extended family, had a wonderful and relaxing vacation at Respite. The amenities were great, used the Weber to grill fresh caught salmon. The outdoor shower is such a great feature, keeping the sand out of the house. The kayaks provide fun and excercise to go along with peaceful walks through the very nearby dunes. Incredible sunsets to enjoy every night.

Beautiful beach house

  • 5 of 5

We needed a large beach house to sleep our family of 12 and were lucky to find this beautiful home on Lake Michigan. It is exactly as shown in the photos. We had three generations staying at the house and it accommodated all of us comfortably. The grandkids especially loved the beach and kayaks. There is a large sandbar out front making it safer for the little ones. Mary was wonderful helping us with anything we needed and answering questions. We had a problem with the refrigerator and the owners replaced it with a new one immediately. I highly recommend this beautiful home.

Amazing Stay in Beautiful Beach Home

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I recently stayed in Jan and Chris’ home and found it to be wonderfully accommodating and cozy. The application process and “check in” was very simple; Jan was available to discuss the details and answer questions via phone, while the house keeper, Mary, lives nearby and was available through our stay if needed as well.

We loved many things about our time spent here, most obvious being the location! We couldn’t have been blessed with a better location—private beach front, access to park trails, quiet, secluded slice of paradise, but too nearby bike paths leading to Grand Haven, public beaches and parks, and a grocery store.

Jan and Chris’ place was exactly as pictured and came fully stocked with the amenities of home! The beds are extremely comfortable; the loft upstairs offers great views and a quiet reading nook. You’ll experience amazing Lake Michigan views from most rooms in the house! We also loved using the kayaks on calm seas and enjoying sunset bonfines in the pit on the back patio.

In short, we highly recommend Jan and Chris as hosts and fell in love with their home! We look forward to staying again in the future.

Wonderful Beach House

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lakefront home. The views were outstanding. The beds were very comfortable. House was well stocked and clean. 2 kayaks were a fun addition. The most impressive part however, was the property manager, Mary. She took care of our every need. My 89 year old mother fell and broke her wrist at the beginning of our stay. Mary called to check on her. She delivered some new fans and stayed to talk to her. There was some severe weather that moved in and she called to warn us and check in. We rent a home every summer on Lake Michigan and this is my new favorite.

We would never return

  • 1 of 5

This owner requires a credit check including that renter provide a social security number.

That was the beginning. There was a terrible rodent problem. We saw that mice were visiting the kitchen at night, complete with droppings on the kitchen counter! We personally caught 3 mice before caretaker came and deposited rodent killer in the crawl space. We had small children with us, and this was totally unacceptable. When we asked the owner to compensate for our poor vacation, let alone purchase of traps etc, we were met with stony silence. We did get our deposit back, but nothing more.

We cannot recommend this property or owner.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry that you had a bad experience at our home. We've taken your feedback to heart and had comprehensive extermination services to take care of the rodent issue, which are very common in pier and beam cottages in this part of the country. We have had no pest problems since then. It also seems that the credit check is problematic. We're currently looking into streamlining our reservation process to make this easier. Please accept our apologies for a less than great stay.
