About Bridget Butlin

I have lived in Newport since 1974, and have loved every minute of being here! Newport is a wonderful town to live in, and has so much to offer visitors and residents alike.

Bridget Butlin purchased this house in 1980

Why Bridget Butlin chose Newport

We bought this house as our first home. We completely renovated, and put in some special touches to make the house comfortable and pleasant to live in. We loved the location & after several years we bought and renovated the property next door and moved in there! We have rented #7 ever since, and have enjoyed meeting very varied and interesting clients.

What makes this house unique

The house is free standing from its neighbors, with a small garden in the back for private relaxation, which is maintained by the owners. The skylights upstairs brighten up the rooms and bathroom. The park across the street makes for a spacious feel to the property. It is very close to the harbour, where there is a public park which runs along the harbour where one can walk & enjoy the water views & harbour action. The house is conveniently located as it is within easy walking or bicycling distance to restaurants, shops, mansions, museums, beaches and parks. There is one off street parking space.

Guestbook comments from the manager

My husband I rented this adorable, meticulously maintained cottage for the months of March and April. We needed a place to stay with our dog as we travelled back and forth to watch our son's college lacrosse games.  The house was perfect for us.

The house had everything we needed to feel at home.  The fenced in yard was great for our dog.  The location is close to all of Newport's shops and restaurants.

There's a waterfront park just down the street.  You are able to park your car on or off the street.  Biddy and Ed live next door and are so kind and friendly.

We had a terrific experience and would love to stay in this house again!

Happy Month of May

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I needed to find a place where we could transition between a Boston suburb where the sale of our house closed in late April and early June, when we could move into our house in Fairfield County, CT. We would have 2 loaded cars, 2 bikes, and our nearly 15 year old Yorkie ("Baby") with the rest of our stuff packed away into storage; rather than try to rent locally, we thought it would be a good chance to try to turn this 6 week interlude into a kind of vacation. 7 Clinton sounded like the perfect fit for our needs and we were not disappointed. The house was exactly as advertised, It has now been a couple of months since our stay in Newport, but we have nothing but happy and pleasant memories: Biddy was extremely helpful on our arrival in straightening out the internet connection; she had just recently installed a flat screen TV; thoughtfully equipped the kitchen with an oven toaster (which we had inquired about) and a brand new gas barbecue. Flowers were just beginning to bloom and while we had our share of windy/rainy days, spring sunshine was plentiful and there was nothing more exhilarating than going on our daily cycling (with Baby in a basket) loop around Ocean Drive (all sorts of pleasant routes, most averaging 8 or 9 miles); while the wind gust could occasionally be very challenging, the roads and scenic points were virtually deserted at this time of the year (at least up until late May), making it all the more private and enjoyable; nothing like watching the waves. Biddy and Ed pay constant attention to the maintenance and upkeep of their property, down to the smallest details. The house is two short blocks from lower Thames; even during what was preseason, tons of places to eat; among our favorite was Mama Luisa; I also especially enjoyed the cheap but delicious belly clam sandwiches at Juicy Cheesy on Thames St (Egyptian owner!). The grass courts at the Newport Tennis Club were not open but I played several times at the club clinic, a short bike ride (or walk ..uphill; or drive) away. After staying at Biddy's for a month, we admit we were looking forward to moving on to Chatham ; we can report that while the Chatham house had a beautiful sea view, there was simply no comparison to 7 Clinton St., in terms of cleanliness and maintenance and care. Highly recommended for 1 couple (with or w/o children) or perhaps 2 couples (although only 1 full plus 1 half bath may be a constraint).

Owner's Response: It is our express intention when setting up #7 Clinton St., to make it as welcoming and easy as possible for our clients to move in and be comfortable. We try to make sure that everything in the house runs smoothly, and that should a problem occur, we will do our best to rectify the situation asap. We usually use the winter months to work on any necessary repairs, and freshen up paint etc. We are very grateful to Richard and Tina for their great review. We hope all our future clients really enjoy their time in #7 Clinton St., as much as Richard and Tina have reported in their review. It is always very helpful to receive feedback from our clients, and we will always try to work with any special needs. We are happy to respond to inquiries for more details, and any questions about the house and location. Newport is a very special place with much to do and see, and we feel lucky to live here. We really enjoy being able to offer a temporary home to visitors to the island. We look forward to both meeting new clients, and welcoming back return visitors.

Great cottage in fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

We are repeat renters and for good reason. The cottage is in a terrific location in Newport: 2 blocks from Kings Park which is adjacent to the harbor, and a 5 minute walk to lower Thames Street where there are shops and famous restaurants. The front door of the house also opens out onto a sweet neighborhood park which is used by dog walkers, pedestrians, soccer players, and other local characters.

Ed and Biddy are great to rent from without being intrusive. The house is spotless when we arrive and Biddy and Ed are always updating things in our absence which we appreciate. Plus, the house feels like a home instead of a "rental unit." It is well-stocked with kitchen equipment, cleaning supplies, linens, pillows, comfortable furniture, and most importantly, reading lamps. With all these thoughtful comforts, it is easy to feel like you are "living" in Newport instead of "visiting" Newport.

Owner's Response: We hope to please and make comfortable all our clients. We know what we like to find when we rent a vacation property, and we try to provide the same. Many people comment on the house location, they seem to really enjoy stepping out of the front door and seeing the harbour at the end of the block [just 4 houses down]. We look forward to welcoming back re-visiting clients, and any new ones!
