Why Christina Ahmed chose Florida

When we found this home we were awed by its unique situation between the oak trees. As if they were cradling the home. We loved the park like setting next to the river, so peaceful and quiet. with the occasional passerby in a canoe. The area the house is set on is near to where the historic Dade Battlefield occurred back in December 1835. You can really see old Florida in the Talisman Riverhouse property.

What makes this house unique

When we visit the Riverhouse we usually spend most of the time relaxing by the river and enjoying the many wildlife sightings. It is very calm and quiet there. The trees and secluded nature of the property are what make this place special. It is most appealing to those who love nature and don't mind a little rustic comforts. My husband has really enjoyed using this as his hunting cabin since the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve is 20 minutes down the road.

Stunning outdoor beauty.

This home was clean and cozy. There was a small plaque that said Fairies live here. I would have to agree. The property was a magical kingdom fit for fairies and divas. We will definitely want to return.

Escape along the lazy Withlacoochie River

  • 4 of 5

Our daughter was coming home from her second tour in Afghanistan. She'd told me a few weeks before her arrival in the US that she just wanted to escape from the rest of the world for a little bit and commune with nature in a cabin in the woods. The Talisman Riverhouse was just what the doctor ordered. Our small family met there for two days and had a "magical weekend", as our daughter later described it. The first night we sat around the island counter in the kitchen eating snacks, drinking a few beers, and listening to her stories about life in the war zone. In the morning we loafed and talked some more in the very comfy living room with windows that face the river. We then packed some sandwiches and went canoeing up the Withlacoochie River. We'd rented two canoes from a nearby outfitter who dropped the canoes off in the morning and picked them up that night. We saw plenty of Woodstorks and Ibis, a Limpkin catching snails for its lunch, herons, and one very determined Kingfisher flying back and forth over the water looking for his own lunch. We went canoeing three times that day, stopping often to take photos of the beautiful cypress and live oaks draped over the water casting picturesque reflections all around us. My daughter and I paddled a few miles up river once and let the lazy river drift us back down to the cabin while we talked, and talked, and talked some more. There's never enough time. That night after eating dinner around the big dining room table, we moved out to the fire pit between the house and river, and stoked up a blazing fire. More talking and sipping wine into the wee hours. In the morning we took a walk up the dirt road, soaked up the warm weather, the lush vegetation all around us, and caught lots of tiny little toads to take their pictures in our hands. Sadly, we had to leave that morning, but the memories and photos of a wonderful weekend will always be with us. We cleaned the cabin thoroughly before locking the key in the lock box and heading down the road back to civilization.

Observations for other visitors:

The property was well maintained. It's like a hunter's cabin in the woods, so be prepared for rustic. Not everything is perfect and that's part of the charm. The beds were clean and very comfortable. The shower and bathroom were clean. We had a small drip from the drain under the kitchen sink but the owner got right back to me on the phone and we fixed it. The kitchen was cozy but had everything we needed.
