About Terry Thompkins

My name is Terry and my husband, Jeff and I live in Wilmington, NC. I grew up in upstate New York but moved to Raleigh and then to Wilmington when I was younger. We first went to Powder Horn Mountain when our kids were about 7 and 10 and had the best family vacation we have ever had. We loved getting out in the woods, hikng, fishing, animal watching and just getting back to pure family time. We returned every summer and then had the opportunity to buy a lot and build our own dream cabin. How lucky and blessed we are!

We have tried to make this cabin a cozy retreat for all who come to find peace and re-connect with nature and your loved ones.

Terry Thompkins purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Terry Thompkins chose Deep Gap

We built our dream cabin on the most beautiful spot on our mountain. The views from our deck can rival any others around!

What makes this cabin unique

You can make your stay as busy or lazy as you wish! Tackle the trails on our mountain or sit back in the hammock and read a good book. Then after dinner a long soak in the hot tub with the stars shinning above is heavenly!

Perfect Home with Beautiful Mountain Views

  • 5 of 5

As the name suggests, this home is truly Heaven in the Hills. The mountain views are breathtaking, and we enjoyed the upper and lower decks which have lots of furniture. The home has everything you need for a fabulous time - cable TV, gas fireplace, hot tub, grill, gas fire pit, rocking chairs and a screened porch, where we could all sit around the table to play games. The home is incredibly well equipped and stocked with everything you need, including plenty of throw blankets in the living room and linens in the bedrooms. We especially loved the loft bedroom and bathroom upstairs with the huge wall of windows overlooking the mountains. You can truly feel the love that has been put into this home and it has such a mountain-y feel, which is what we're always looking for when we escape to the mountains. Thank you for a wonderful stay, Terry!

A Charm in the Hills

  • 4 of 5

We recently had two couples go and enjoy this home over a quick weekend getaway. The house if very comfortable, extremely clean and cozy. Terry was accessible and easy to reach with any questions.

The directions to the cabin is something visitors should be aware of. We went after a week of rain and heavy rain on the weekend of our trip making some of the roads "interesting," where a lot of slushy road conditions made it a little uneasy. I wouldn't say that 4WD is not required by any means, but it may be an easier trip under these type of conditions.

There are two entrances to Powder Horn Estates. The first, which GPS will lead you to, is an owners only entrance. You'll need to continue another 2+ miles down a very curvy gravel/paved road to the public entrance. Once we made it to the public entrance we were able to access the property. However, we did not have service on our phone (Verizon) and were unable to get proper directors to the house from the person manning the gate. If the gate is unattended you may have the same trouble. We made our way down the clubhouse and office area where we were able to speak to the property manager, Kermit, who was able to provide us directions to get to the cabin. Possibly having written directions and the estates property map could be helpful to future renters.

The house was perfectly fit for all of our needs. Unless you want a 30+ minute trip back to Wilkesboro, you will definitely want to make sure you have all the food and supplies you need. We loved the hot tub and had one great evening to enjoy the hot tub under the stars before weather turned bad. We used the grill each night and the propane firepit. The owners have done a great job of making sure you have everything you need to use the facility (propane, hot tub cleaned, plenty of towels, extra kitchen essentials).

I would highly recommend this rental!

Owner's Response: I am so glad you all enjoyed your stay at our cozy cabin! I am so sorry your GPS took you in the "back" way. The directions I send you bring you in the front and to the front/security gate. I also include a map of our mountain in this information. We are a winding mountain community but that is also the charm of our mountain :0) I hope you all come back again and the weather be nicer for you! Sincerely, Terry

Charming log cabin nestled in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved this log cabin and the views from the back of the house. The house was beautifully laid out and had everything we needed. We loved how the bedrooms were separated between the upstairs and downstairs. We used the grill and hot tub and took advantage of some of the games also. It was nice that the owners had a manual with lots of information about the house and the surrounding area. We highly recommended this house to anyone visiting this area.

'Had a great time in this beautiful mountain home! We all enjoyed the

'What an amazing view! This is the 4th house on Powderhorn that we

missed! Thank you for sharing!'

'Hiking on Grandfather Mountain - the perfect trail

Shopping in Blowing Rock - the perfect store

Biking down the Virginia Creeper trail - the perfect ride

Our four days on Powder Horn - the perfect honeymoon!

Thanks for letting us stay in your beautiful home.'

'Dear Terry,

I hardly know where to begin as it seems words are inadequate to

express my graditude to you and your family.

We chose your cabin in Deep Gap, NC for one of our two family

vacations... We usually go to the beach as my family has always gone to Myrtle and we got in a rut. I decided to do something different.

Terry your home on Powder Horn Mountain is beautiful, peaceful, and

welcoming. From the moment we walked in we felt we were home. We have done a lot of private rentals but truly this was the BEST!

I found myself at one point standing on the deck with tears in my eyes

as I reflected on the fact this was the most relaxed I have felt in a very long time. All your little touches and extra efforts make people want to not only nestle in but treat it like home.

Amazing, you have a gift.

OK. I could go on and on but please allow me to say again .... Thank

you! It was wonderful and we are so looking forward to going back. It is so gracious of you to share such a wonderful place with

others and I wanted to take the time to tell you.'
