About Nancy Palma

In 2006 I bought this little cottage in the heart of the Southside neighborhood. I have traveled extensively, and the one thing I have found out is that "it's nice to go away, but home is best". It's where you are most comfortable, where everything you need is right there, and as much as you like to visit elsewhere, it's always great to be back home. So, Welcome Home!

With those thoughts in mind I started HYH in GH to be the place you can call "home". I open my "home" to each guest I host, and many return because they have found a place to "hang their hat" and call "home".

The Palma's welcome you, Nancy & Jim

Why Nancy Palma chose Western Michigan

Whenever friends or family would visit us in Michigan we would always include a trip to Grand Haven. The boardwalk, the beach, the cute shops on Washington. We loved showing off "The Lake", climbing the dunes and relaxing with a nice meal downtown.

When I saw this little house, I knew it was where I could express my heart.

What makes this apartment unique

Located right downtown where you can park your car and walk to everything! Cozy and comfortable, Hang Your Hat is the place you will return to year after year and call "home". Everything you would think to bring with you is already here, and perhaps more :)

Guestbook comments from the owner

From snowy cold Wisconsin, we arrived in snowy Grand Haven and our home for the week - Hang Your Hat. On our many hikes along the channel, and on the pier to the lighthouse we saw beautiful ice formations and the rugged beauty of the wind blown broken ice on the Lake. We enjoyed delicious meals ans service at Elegance of the Seasons, Kirby's, JW's, and Fricano's Pizza. We also had yummy desserts at the Baker's Wife and Culvers. We were fascinated by the heated streets and sidewalks in downtown Grand Haven - they were free of snow and ice. The rest of the town has snow packed sidewalks and streets, and snow piles of 6 feet plus on the curbs. Thank you, Nancy, we had a relaxing, fun time in the cozy, warm "Hang Your Hat" flat.

HAPPY 50 th BIRTHDAY

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property located blocks away from stores, restaurants and the water. It was so nice to be able to walk in the door and forget everything else. The top floor has a great view of downtown to watch all the happenings and I could walk to any place within a few minutes. The house itself has all the comforts of home and is well maintained.

Cozy, comfortable, conveniet

  • 5 of 5

Being walking distance to the restaurants and breweries was super fun and convenient for my husband and I. Quick 3 minute drive to the state park and tons of kite flying. Only our second time without kids in 23 years of festivals! Apartment was super comfortable, clean and homey. Was really easy to feel "at home". We had a ball!

Owner's Response: Wow! Twenty-three years of Kite Festival!!! That's amazing and wonderful, and it's about time you had some time for yourselves, although there is room for a few of those kids to join you :) I love hosting families like yours and I have been doing so for twelve seasons with many repeat guests that fill my calendar. I am so happy that you have found your new "home" in GH, and I hope it is for years to come! There is so much to do in our town with festivals, great breweries, shops, activities, biking, skiing (yes, we have the Snow Bowl at Mulligan's Hollow), and a great visitors center that can help you find just what you're looking for; we have it all! And, being located downtown, within walking distance to it all, too!

Favourite place!

  • 5 of 5

We hunted the shoreline of Lake Michigan online for a couple of days before deciding that Hang Your Hat was the perfect house in the best town for a relaxing few days at the end of a busy US vacation. We were not disappointed: Top Hat is a delightful apartment with comfy, attractive and well-appointed rooms on an elegant Grand Haven street, just a short stroll from the cafes and boutiques of Washington Avenue. Nancy is lovely, and manages (no easy task!) to be both thorough in ensuring that the apartment works well, and wonderfully calm and relaxed in her dealings with her house guests. We really enjoyed chatting with her and would love to return in the future. We would recommend Grand Haven's Boardwalk stroll, the Musical Fountain (unique!) and the beach and - just a short drive away - the beautiful Homestead Trail in the Hoffmaster State Park and the Frederik Meijer Sculpture Park and Gardens in Grand Rapids. Thanks Nancy, and do come and find us when you make it to England!

Owner's Response: Delightful guests always manage to find their way to Hang Your Hat in Grand Haven, and you were definitely one of the most delightful having come from such a distance! I am also delighted that you found your way to so many of the treasures our West Coast (aka, the 3rd Coast) has to offer; nature trails, sculpture trails (Meijer Gardens), and sidewalks that are clear and open all season round (snow melt system!). Remember, HYH in GH is open year round as each season brings it's own delights. I look forward to hosting you again, and all the other delightful people who happen my way. I do hope to make that hop across the pond to visit your area of the UK!

Comfortable, Cozy and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

Nancy is an amazing lady and goes above and beyond to make her guests feel welcome, comfortable and secure. She has just about every kitchen gadget you could possibly need while you're staying away from home. Nancy provides mini printed instructions throughout the home to answer questions that you may have about any given situation. The location is fantastic which enables you to walk to all downtown festivities with ease. When I plan a return trip to Grand Haven I will definitely be staying at Hang Your Hat.

Owner's Response: I DO hope you will be returning to Grand Haven, as I wish each one who has personally touched my life (like you) would do! I know you came to find HYH in GH your "home away from home", and I hope your great assessment of the flat will help others know they, too, can "come home". Not only does the downtown location make one's stay easy to get around, but a relaxing place to enjoy shops, restaurants, and one of the many festivals that take place throughout the year because you can walk, ride one of the bikes, or take the Harbor Trolley that goes right by the house from Memorial Day to Labor Day!
